Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts.

Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel has a very thick, foamy, beige head, an initially mostly clear, reddish-brown appearance, which clouds up with tan yeast chunks and billowing yeast, once the bottom contents are swished and poured in, and heavy lacing left behind. The aroma is of sweet, spicy, brown bread, and the flavor is of the same thing, with an overriding tap water aspect. Mouthfeel is medium, and Andechser Weissbier Dunkel finishes wet and rather dull. Pours a light brown color with a foamy head. Aroma of bubblegum and toasted malt. The flavor of bubblegum and banana, roasted malt, caramel and dry grains. Truly a remarkably tasty, authentic dunkel wiessbier from Germany. So good and to drink it in the Teutonia Mannechor, Pittsburgh's German club, was outstanding. Absolutely fantastic.

Served in improper glassware, a snifter, but that's all I've got available.

Wondrous head, chewy and foamy, oatmeal-colored and persistent. Lace is plentiful. The body is surprisingly dark, almost pitch-black. I guess I was expecting something more dark brown. Either way, it's elegant. 5

Aromas of dark bread, rye, toast and caramel all occur to me. Molasses becomes more noticeable with a few more passes of the nose. 4.25

Think raisin bran without the raisins and that's about right for the taste. Very cereal-like with a touch of sweet molasses. Clove and banana become more noticeable as the beer warms and linger on the finish. 3.5

Lighter in the body than I was expecting, but also lighter in carbonation, so the feel here is decent. I'd probably like a bit more body, but you have to appreciate how easily this brew drinks. The finish is grainy and again leaves a feel in the mouth like cereal, which makes it feel quite hearty. 3.75

Not as lovely as their Helles and not at the level of Weihenstephaner, but this brew is plenty enjoyable.

Head is unimpressive. Darker than expected, even for a dunkel weisse. Smells of roast, pencil shavings, and faint notes of fruitiness and cocoa.

Served cool from 500ml bottle into weisse bier glass.

A) Dark chestnut brown, hazy. Head is very thin for a weisse.

S) Fairly muted slightly menthylated cloves.

T) Deep malty, hints of roasted malt / smoke. The banana / clove character is quite muted.

M) Fairly thin and fizzy - and I am not complaining.

O) I was expecting something similar to Schneider Weisse Original and Weihenstephaner Dunkel, but this is an entirely different take on the style and that is great. The roasted flavour comes more into place here giving a well balanced and enjoyable bier. Fill your boots.
