Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This dark Weissbier retains its aromatic character thanks to the select choice of Hallertau aroma hops and highest quality Bavarian wheat and dark barley malts.

Its characteristic, distinctive maroon colour is a feast for the eyes. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. The perfect complement is provided by the very creamy, fine pored head. This dark Weissbier from the Holy Mountain will delight connoisseurs with a harmonious interplay of fruity odours, above all ripe bananas and pineapple, with undertones of caramel and cocoa.

Andechser Weissbier Dunkel teases the tongue with a delicate tanginess carried by a round, soft body. A light caramel sweetness harmonises well with the fine hoppy bitterness. It concludes on a soft and refreshing note.

Appearance - Pours cola brown with a frothy, near two-finger width off-white head. Good retention, resulting in a solid film of suds stretching across the surface. Decent lacing, with broken lines and spotting making up the bulk of it.

Smell - The nose is greeted with toffee/caramel, banana, clove and slight tartness.

Taste - A little darker than the nose would indicate. Caramel and slight toffee that is met with a faint, roasty malt flavor. Fair touch of banana and clove, but lacks ideal strength. Light tartness creeps into the finish.

Mouthfeel - Light-bodied with low carbonation. Slightly fluffy texture, going down incredibly easy, but leaving a bit to be desired. Lightly dry finish.

Overall - Not an especially impressive example of the style. A bit weak in flavor and body. Drinkable, but quickly forgettable.

500 ml bottle. Served in a mug, the beer pours a slightly hazy reddish/brown color with about an inch and a half creamy tan head. The head stuck around for a while, and there's a decent amount of lacing. The brew smells like caramel, clove, bananas, and some chocolate. Taste is similar to the aroma, there's caramel malt, clove, banana, bready/grainy malt, toffee and dark fruitiness noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit creamy and easy enough to drink. There's also a good amount of carbonation. I thought it was an enjoyable enough brew, glad I tried this one!

Big fine-grained foam in the Affligem chalice. Dark brown in color. Poured from the 500 ml bottle. Sudsy mouthfeel is nice.

A touch of caramel and a little sweetness continues into the aftertaste. This has a bitterish taste and the touch of clove tastes like very old spices from the back of the cabinet. Slightly buttery with the roasted grain taste.

This would probably taste fabulous in a big glass among the vines somewhere along the Rhine. It goes down easy but I'm not wanting to try any more of these Andescher beers after the four I purchased at Bottleworks in Seattle.

Although not a fan of wheat beer, this is a very pleasant one. Smooth, creamy body with a bit of a sour aftertaste.

If I'm gonna drink a wheat beer, this is the one to have. The caramel and banana make it a pleasant change of pace. On tap at the Sunnyvale Beer Garden.
