Since Saint Joseph’s Day on 19 March 1993, Andechs Weissbier Hell has found many new friends. Untreated and bottled in its natural state of yeasty turbidity, this is a top fermented beer for the epicure.

Its light honey colour makes it an immediate eyecatcher. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. At the same time, the creamy, fine pored head invites you to get to know this light Weissbier from the Holy Mountain. You’ll need two takes to enjoy the aromas to the full.

First, distinctive fruity aromas like banana and honeydew melon come to the fore, followed by fine cloves. Andechser Weissbier Hell is a very tangy, refreshing treat with the conviction of a full, soft body. It concludes on a finely balanced interplay of light sweet honey and a delicate acidity with undertones of bitter hoppiness that quickly subside into a harmonious aftertaste.

A murky orange, yellow beer with a creamy blanket of foamy head. It pours like velvet.

Smell is full of clove. This is the one Weizen that only has the clove and not the banana's, although there is exotic fruit in here. The wheat adds a grainy and fresh, mango smell.

Taste is clovey with some dextrines. This is a pretty thick beer for a Weizen and it is kind of sticky too. The wheat is grainy and adds the mango and grape taste together with the yeast. So full of phenols. Drinkability is great.

From the barrel @ Kloster Andechs. I considered reviewing, given its high quality, but in a place with such a view and atmosphere, I think it better to just enjoy.

A classic. Canonical hefeweizen. One of the best.

juicy with just the right clove notes, wheat malt plays well here.

not too sweet, juicy and crisp finish

good lounging around beer can drink a few no problem.

Very pale and cloudy yellow with a soft white head that retained pretty well. I get some light bubble gum and banana in the nose, as well as bread and some light lemon. Just a touch of tartness and clove in the beginning of the taste. Bready tastes throughout with some lemon, not very much banana, except there is some in the finish. Lower in carbonation than most, very light body. Makes for a light, refreshing beer that I'd enjoy in the summer, but considering it's rarity and there being plenty of superior replacements, I'll drink those instead.

A- Poured from the 500ml bottle to a pint glass with a semi-hazy light golden body. A white cap rises to about a three fingers high with a creamy and foamy texture. Head retention is good but the cap falls to a small ring. Lacing is spotty.

S- Light fruit esters off the top with bananas and pears that balance out with some phenolic hints of cloves and spices. A bit of crusty wheat, vanilla sweets and bread hints as well.

T- From the aroma, most things carry over but a fairly strong orange/lemon zest and citrus fruit feel opens up to add a new dimension here. A balance between the banana, pear, clove and German yeast notes is present. Crusty wheat and Pilsner malts bring some sweets.

MF- Light bodied with a creamy, silky texture. Carbonation at a fairly high level but very smooth as the texture of the beer shields the palate. Super light tartness overall.

A nice balance between fruits and spicy tones. Refreshing and flavorful and certainly goes down smoothly.

Poured into a weihenstephan weizen glass.

A- Pours a golden yellow, with about 2 inches of fluffy white head that takes ages to subside, looks almost marshmallowy from the top. impressive.

S- heaps of banana straight up, a touch of clove and spice behind it, but im really searching for anything else.

T- sweetness upfront, banana comes in midway and lingers until the end of the beer, spice and a light clove begins to come through once ive gotten used to the banana, there is some citrus in there, and its really quite nice.

F- mouth filling, yet with a prickly carbonation that makes it seem lighter, nice length of flavour too. very good.

O- i liked this beer, its definitely one i would re-visit if it wasnt so difficult to find (and its a tad pricey in melbourne).

Sampled on 10/10/05 at Probka, this gem came out cloudy yellow gold under a three finger white head with excellent retention generating numerous lace strings. The nose is strong of banana, but just banana. No balancing yeast, spice or other fruit. The mouth is very prickly and quite sticky. The taste is dominated by banana, lots of it. There's a bit of yeast and a touch of dry bitter, but no spice or lemon. Pretty much just banana. An enjoyable, good tasting brew, if a bit one-sided.

Pours a nice light gold with smallish head and minimal lacing. Nose is classic here, but not as big as some other top weissbier. Yeast and esters...wish there was more. Taste is also classic, but again, not huge. Mouthfeel is a big rough with all the carbonation. Overall, a very good beer, but I was expecting something world class.

A- Hazy, golden body. Nice white, foamy head with great retention. Leaves a nice lacing.

S- Very yeasty with some clove and a slight note of citrus.

T- A good bit of clove here. Only a touch of bubblegum followed by a slight citrus. Taste is pretty dry from start to finish.

M- Medium body with moderate carbonation. Cuts out pretty quickly.

D- Very drinkable for a weissbier. Goes down easy and doesn't overpower your palate.

Overall, this is definitely not my favorite weissbier, but it certainly isn't bad.

A - opaque and cloudy orange body with a tall ivory head that holds decent retention
S - typical hefe aroma with banana, wheat, clove, bubble gum
T - good blend of banana, wheat, yeast, clove, bubblegum while being slightly tart on the peppery finish
M - lighter body, effervescent making if feel fuller bodied, nice balance with a clean finish
O - very solid German hefeweizen; I'd drink this any day I'm in the mood for one.

Pours a very cloudy light amber color with substantial head. Nice fruity, yeasty aroma for a hefeweizen. The taste is excellent, esters, malty and a nice hop finish. I prefer the dunkelweizen version but this is very good, one of the best although there are six Bavarian hefeweizen which I thought were better. Still beats out any U.S. craft hefe but a big margin.

Poured from a .5L bottle to a hefe glass the color very cloudy yellow orange with good carbonation. The head is big and white and leaves some nice lace.

The smell is a classic Bavarian hefe, lots of banana and clove.

The taste is also quite good, really not much more to say the this is reall good, high quality hefe weitzen.

The mouthfeel is good lighter then medium body and good carbonation.

The drinkability of this brew is high great quality and easy drinking. It does not seem to be the best I have had, looking forward to a taste vom fass.

L: Bright golden, copper color. Fluffy head that condenses, some lacing. Very cloudy
S: Typical smell of the style, banana bread and clove. A little bit milder than some of the heavy hitters like Weihenstephaner or Ayinger.
T: Very nice, somewhat typical of the style. Banana bread, bubblegum, clove. Got a little pepper bit on the finish. Also a nice creamy flavor. Not as sweet as some others I've had but I find this nice and balanced.
F: What I like about this one is it has a bit of a crispiness to it. Also great smoothness, definately a little heavy but no different than any other hefe.
O: Solid beer, great example of the style. Only thing is compared to others it feels like it is missing something. Its maybe just a little more subdued or milder than other hefes I've had before.

Split a bottle with some friends, as this is a beer that should be shared out of charity.

Pours a hazy yellow-gold with a fluffy white head that leaves lacing. The aroma and flavor are rich with yeast character - tons of orange, herbal spice, clove, and vanilla. All these tasty flavors carry over only the palate with a mellow wheat malt and bready grains. The body has a little weight to it, but for the most part this is a tasty hefe you could happily drink all day and night long.

500 ml bottle purchased from Lifesource natural Grocers in Salem OR. $3,99 Cloudy bright yellow beer with a huge rocky thick white head. Aromas of lemon and wheat, bready with some banana Taste is way better then the aroma..the banana and bubble gum far more to the front. Nice smooth medium mouth feel. A great traditional weiss bier.

Appearance : golden color, with a creamy white head.
Smell : clove, banana, pear and malted wheat aromas.

Light fizzy slight creamy smaller head, hazy orange golden color.

Nose typical German hefe like, nice wheat creamy slight grainy, nice floral weissbier like aroma, almost candy malt and sweetness, nice orange juice and light peel, little coriander and general light spices.

Taste light sweetness, almost candy like toffee caramel note, candi sugar perhaps bit very light. Then creamy wheat, little toasty wheat and biscuit like notes, wheat and hay, into mild coriander and mild spices, as well as light orange zest and some orange juice. Nice lighter style but sweet candy like Bavarian hefe. Finish is dry and a bit light, little bitterness note, more candy and orange zest, etc.

Mouth is med to lighter bod, bit creamy, nice carb.

Overall not bad, semi sweet but stays dry, nice hefe notes without too much bad wheat or spices.

Starting to see Andechs appear around me -- glad to have it!

Based on knowledge of different bottling codes, I'm guessing this was bottled on October 8, 2013; not bad.

A -- Hazy, peach color with a dense, sticky, white head.

S -- Cloves, banana, pepper, wheat malt, and some vague DMS.

T -- All of the above in a delicious concerto. Not big and bold, but hits the best notes for a Bavarian Hefeweizen.

M -- Soft mouthfeel with some crisp carbonation spritziness at the end and a light to light-medium body.

O -- A classic example of the style. If someone wants to know what a Bavarian Hefeweizen should be, Andechs will fill the bill.

A: Pours a lightly hazy honey color with a thick, fluffy, bright white head that slowly faded into a dense and well retained fuzzy rocky film.
S: Huge nose with notes of ripe bananas, syrupy sweetness, caramel or brown sugar, mild clove, cardamom, honey, and a hint of grainy wheat. Overall very sweet and fruity.
T: Thankfully not as sweet as the nose with flavors of chalky wheat and spice including clove, cardamom and black pepper. Lemon comes through in the finish, with a slight mineral quality and chalky yeast in the aftertaste.
M: Super fluffy carbonation, full soft mouthfeel that tapers off in the finish, and a medium-full body.
O: Very good and traditional tasting. Sweet but not cloying. One of the better I've tasted.

Hazy golden body, average white foam with no lacing. Enormously yeasty aroma. It first makes me think of bark, there is big banana in there. Gentle phenols, everything at the right place at the right moment. Beautifully balanced, if I appreciated hefes a lot more, I might shoot for high 4s. Light cloves, sweet, well displayed. Tarter than I expected in mouth though, it makes it all the more refreshing, but I’m not sure I enjoy it as much as the aroma, it is very fruity, yet not very sweet, mostly floral with green herbs hints. Thin-medium bodied, spritzy carbonation, but not lasting. Great aroma..

500 ml bottle, BB date says 28. June 2011, into Franziskaner glass. Hazy pale straw with stems of raising bubbles, copious, moussy white head that holds well and sticks to the walls leaving rings and patches of lace as retreats. Aroma is sweet from malted wheat expressed as well baked bread, with mild banana and clove. The flavor is quite sweet initially coating the lips with sticky film of unfermented sugars and gets doughy & bready later on. There's some mild banana and clove although less than I'd expect from a Hefeweizen, and a good amount of powdery yeastiness. The flavor profile is complemented by delicate citrusy tartness from the high carbonation and suspended yeast. Low hoppy bitterness emerges towards the finish which is dry and spritzy thanks to high carbonation. The perception of body is increased by the yeast hanging in suspension so the beer seems nearly medium bodied.

Andescher's hefeweissbier is a solid offering from the brewery, full of good banana, bread, and ester/phenol flavors when at the appropriate temperature and pleasurably complex. Only the nose was slightly timid, and even this opened up a bit with warmth. Definitely one of the better bottled hefeweizens I've had, this must be impressive on-tap or if available very fresh. Another one that would be nice to have distributed in North America.

Pours an enormous meringue-like head composed of small and medium-sized bubbles, which takes many minutes to reduce to a 0.5cm cap atop the beer. Little lacing is left along the sides of the glass, just a few dots and spotches of residual foam. Peering at the body, I notice aggressive streams of carbonation and the cloudy, opaque character that's due to the unfiltered preparation of the beer. Body color is a pale yellow-orange away from light, holding the beer near the window displays a dull orange center with pale yellow on either side.

Aromas are primarily of yeast combined with bread-like and sweet wheat malt. Moderate banana esters and and very faint coriander follow closely behind. Aroma becomes more expressive as the beer warms, with comforting breadiness and slight vanilla. Still, not the strongest or most complex aroma on a hefeweizen, a bit disappointing given the status of the brewery and this particular beer, but still good.

Tip of the tongue picks up noticeable, but muted, yeast, cooked wheat cereal, and cut lemon flavors. Front of the palate has a decent explosion in flavor, with fairly strong banana, sweet malt, yeast, and very light spicy phenolics. Mid-palate brings on some thicker banana and bread components with reduced yeastiness, lighter phenolics, coriander, apple cider, and a bit of vanilla. Back of palate continues to pick up pleasant banana bread flavors with a slight hint of tartness and coriander. Closes with a flash bitterness and tartness, fading to sweetness and an aftertaste that is mildly tart and reminiscent of the wheat malt, with a bit of residual apple cider and banana flavor as well. Overall, the flavors in the beer are very noticeable, complex, and enjoyable.

Solidly medium-bodied, the beer has a refreshing combination of thickness from the wheat/malt mix and crispness from the carbonation level. Very smooth initially, leading to a dry finish that complements the tart aftertaste nicely.
