Notes / Commercial Description:
Since Saint Joseph’s Day on 19 March 1993, Andechs Weissbier Hell has found many new friends. Untreated and bottled in its natural state of yeasty turbidity, this is a top fermented beer for the epicure.

Its light honey colour makes it an immediate eyecatcher. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. At the same time, the creamy, fine pored head invites you to get to know this light Weissbier from the Holy Mountain. You’ll need two takes to enjoy the aromas to the full.

First, distinctive fruity aromas like banana and honeydew melon come to the fore, followed by fine cloves. Andechser Weissbier Hell is a very tangy, refreshing treat with the conviction of a full, soft body. It concludes on a finely balanced interplay of light sweet honey and a delicate acidity with undertones of bitter hoppiness that quickly subside into a harmonious aftertaste.

500ml bottle - $3.48 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours out a lightly hazed, straw-hued body with a small-sized, brief, white head.

Smell: Wheat with a thin veneer of sweet-scented honey, citrus and light banana, phenolic spicy elements.

Taste: Crisped wheat, moderately sweet cereal quality chased with a spritz of clean, clear lemon juice. Gentle banana accent, a little bubblegum, one scant drop of vanilla. The hops remain rather subtle, imparting only a light bitterness. All flavors converge on the lightly sweetish, rather crisp finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: Lively and refreshing on this Easter Sunday.

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into an imperial pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep yellow color, with a large white head that fades slowly and leaves a very thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains wheat, bananas, caramelized malts and a very faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of wheat and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. Then some mildly sweet flavors banana and some citrus come in. The hops presence is very mild but complementary and brings an excellent balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

O: Very tasty, goes down quite easily, not too filling, mild kick, excellent representation of style, this is a great beer to drink for a long time.

From 02/11/12 notes. Bottle shared by Thorep429; thanks Mike! This beer wasn't on my radar and is probably one of the best hefeweizens I've had. Poured into a tulip.

a - Pours a hazy straw yellow color with one finger of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of bananas, spices, cloves, Belgian yeast, light citrus, light floral, and light pepper. Fresh bananas dominate here and are awesome. One of the best smelling hedeweizens I've ever smelled.

t - Tastes of bananas, spice, pepper, cloves, Belgian yeast, and light floral notes. more pepper then the nose. Very nice but not quite as good as the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Super smooth and creamy, and insanely easy to drink. Awesome body.

o - Overall I thought this was an outstanding hefeweizen; it's up there with the Live Oak hefe, Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, and Moon Man as one of the best I've ever had. The nose is awesome, and just a ton of fresh bananas, and it is insanel easy to drink. The taste was good but not quite as great as the nose, as it focused more on pepper. An awesome beer I can't wait to have again.

The appearance is typical of the style. Straw yellow in color with a dense, white head. Fantastic aroma with banana, clove, spices, wheat. Refreshing flavor. Light and soft on the palate. Poundable. Superb balance. I would love to try this side by side with Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, as these are without question the two best examples of a German hefeweizen I have ever had. Highly recommended.

fresh bottle delivered straight from Munich...

Hazed straw yellow color, very cloudy, enormous, pillowy white, long-lasting head...looks perfect!

Super fresh aroma! Big banana and orange, with lingering lemon, big and beautiful, airy and invigorating...

Taste: snappy, sparkling, citric, smooth, mellow...lush, lovely malt...lemon, lime and orange lie largest in the flavor...brisk, livley carbonation...refreshing and easy-drinking...definitely downable and downright delicious.

A grittier mouthfeel than many American-made hefe weizens, and a fuller texture...this is the stuff! Not sure if it outshines Weheinstephaner of Schneider Wess...I think it's heavier than them both, more flavorful, without some of the ethereal qualities the finer weizens can boast.

Quite a flavorful number here... big lemon, full malt, not so much spice as you'd taste in others...very full of character and utter panache...there's nothing not to like...yum...so delicious.

Poured from the bottle into a curved wheat ale glass.

Does not gush or foam very hard on opening, but pours with some aggression makes a super bleach white head that is even pin head bubbled, thick and soapy with thick ring lacing. Body color is a gorgeous and cloudy hue of colors from dully lemon yellow on the bottom to apricot orange through the top. Has a mid haze in the middle with clarity on the edges, and very fine carbonation.

Nose is classic. Spritzy like lemon and drive clove like spices. Some hinting banana senses but more of a balance of spicy and citrus.

Palate comes with classic flavors but a large champagne wet crispness. Not much chewy wheat presence, but great lemon and sharp hop quick dissipating finish. Mild bitterness matching with clove and lemon, and faint toasted white bread just barely breaking out. Light to wet bodied and lots of mimosa like qualities.

It's a little lighter and crisper than most Hefeweizens, but it's very unique and real great tasting. Probably not my favorite in the style but a great one in its own right.

Big thanks to Matt for bringing some Andechs love back from Germany. Served this in a pint glass due to limited selection at the parent's house. Label denotes a best before date of February 27th, 2010. I also dug the random factoids about Carl Orff.

A - Three-plus fingers of soapy white foam that dissipates quickly until about a finger and a half are left behind - then it dissipates quite slowly and eventually settles to an attractive thick cap. Not a ton of lace, with just a few spots dotting the glass. Hazed, unfiltered color, that isn't too pale and rests more on the orange side of things than yellow. Gets a little milky near the bottom of the bottle.

S - Intense - it's initially a strong banana and bubblegum sweetness, but as it warms more of the yeast and clove character emerges. Light malted wheat, but not overly sharp - more like fresh sweet bread (as in the Portugese grain product and NOT cow's pancreas). Excellent balance of sweet, starchy, and tangy, with the slightest hint of sour Berliner Weiss flavor starting to creep in.

T - The taste is more wheat-oriented, with a very intense bread character. The finish is light banana, and the aftertaste is fairly clean although it gets a touch yeasty by the end of the 1/2 liter. Thankfully the cloves are in the periphery. Less complex than the aroma, but still quite pleasant.

M - This is overcarbonated (which thankfully is easier to solve than undercarbonation). It makes the beer a bit too harsh and gritty for my liking. The body is a little bigger than most hefeweizen's which helps offset the bubbliness. Dry finish with minimal residual feel.

D - If this were less carbonated it would be one of the best session wheats out there - and would be very similar to the Schneider Weizenhell. It's one of the better German wheats and is worth trying if you're over there, but probably not worth deliberately seeking out with some many other options available.

Beer is soft and yellow, hazy, big white head, lacing, nice carbonation.

Aroma is sweet, banana, mildly spicy, near perfect aroma.

Beer is soft, sweet, smooth, wet finish. No aftertaste, a great yeast palate, no bitterness, smooth and wonderful. I really loved this beer. I really want some more.

Split a bottle with some friends, as this is a beer that should be shared out of charity.

Pours a hazy yellow-gold with a fluffy white head that leaves lacing. The aroma and flavor are rich with yeast character - tons of orange, herbal spice, clove, and vanilla. All these tasty flavors carry over only the palate with a mellow wheat malt and bready grains. The body has a little weight to it, but for the most part this is a tasty hefe you could happily drink all day and night long.

A shade darker than yellow in the glass, cloudy, and topped with a head which retains all the way down. The classic hefeweizen nose is clear; spicy clove, banana, nutmeg, a touch of cinnamon, all working together to make a lovely smell. It continues into the taste, which is phenlicand banana first, then comes the spice, and a touch of vanilla. It's a flaovrdul weiss with much appeal. It's nearly medium bodied yet stays refreshing. Of the four Andechs that I tasted, this, not the Doppelbock, was my favorite.

The beer pours a hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma is strong bananas and cloves. The flavor is bananas, yeast and cloves. Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. This beer is exactly what I am looking for in a hefeweizen. Awesome.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a light to medium golden amber with a half finger white head that dissipates to patches and ring around the glass, leaving light lacing. Classic hefeweizen aroma of wheat, clove light banana, slightly bready. Flavor is cracked wheat, clove, light breadiness, a touch of lemon citrus and a touch of toffee, finishing with dry wheat and light clove bitterness. Medium bodied with good carbonation. A perfectly balanced and flavored wheat beer that hits all the right notes for a hefeweizen. One of the best hefe I've had. Excellent.

Pours a hazed golden peach color with dense slightly off white head. Earthy, farmy nose of banana, cream, grass, pepper and dough. Peach and banana dominate flavor with clove and light pepper spice, slightly bitter finish. Creamy, well carbonated thick body with a doughy finish.

This beer came last in a blind tasting of 4 German brewed Hefewiezrn biers held at my place last week (Sep 2008). It was up against biers from Krombacher (the best), Erdinger and Schofferhofer.

Typical murky, clouldy yellow body you come to expect of a Hefewiezen, good light head that hangs around for most of the drink.

There was a lot of vanilla and banana in the aroma, but not much spice or citrus to be found.

The taste was again average, not as spritzy, tangy or crisp as the other biers in the tasting, almost bland in some aspects.

I know this beer seems to get high scores from most reviewers, but it did very little to get many votes when compared to the others mentioned. A big dissapointment all round for me.

A very fine weissbier- yeasty but crisp with the requisite clove and banana flavors, but light and snappy rather than creamy or chewy. Goes down smooth- an especially nice hot weather beer.

The beer pours a slightly hazy, golden tan color with good head retention and considerable lacing. On the nose this is textbook hefe, with clove, light banana, nutmeg and considerable underlying spice. As good as it smells, the beer is considerably better on the palate, with the beer showcasing considerable bread dough, clove, banana, and considerable spice, all on a very dry, sharp "clovey" finish. (I hated this flavor combination when I lived in Germany years ago, but now I just love it). Mouthfeel is medium bodied at most, but it's truly amazing how much flavor this beer packs with such a low abv.

Excellent. One of those hefe's that immediately puts me in mind of my days living in Germany, even though that was almost 40 years ago now.

I had this on tap at the brewery restaurant on March 18, 2006.

A: Hazy straw, lots of fluffy white head, good retention and lace.

S: Malty (bread), citrus and spice, slight banana.

T: Bready, citrus, spice, hint of pineapple and banana. (taste scores between 4 and 4.5).

M: Light to moderate body is very creamy. Light to moderate carbonation.

The beer comes in this beautiful hazy sunset golden yellow with a decent 2 finger fluffy white head.

The aroma has a sweet grain/wheat, banana, banana Laffy Taffy candy, lots of orange peel.

The flavor follows with a banana candy, again, lots of orange peel, a bit of pepper, clove. There's a candy sugar sweetness that picks up the beer in the middle. The finish has a bit of a strange wheat/grain flavor. The flavor falls a bit quickly and it does not have much of that explosion of big bubble gum and fruit flavors.

There's tons of carbonation that scrubs the tongue throughout the beer, like champagne.

Still a great beer.

Draft at Brauhaus Schmitz in Philadelphia, PA.

Pours a very cloudy and very dark golden orange color with dark golden banana-yellow colored edges and a massive three finger, pillowy white head that very slowly settles into a lasting ring. Great retention, coating the glass with large chunks of soapy lacing on the way down.

Lots of spice in the nose with a strong peppery clove presence along with prominent malted wheat and a heavy bread/yeast character.  Just a touch of banana with a strong citrus/lemon zest presence.  As it warms, I'm also picking up a bit of melon, grapefruit and blood orange.  The nose is dominated by clove and peppery spice but the citrus element really opens up after a while.  

Full body with a zesty spice presence up font that lingers over the bready yeast, banana and sweet citrus notes into a slight tart, dry finish.  Heavy peppery clove flavor up front but it is nicely countered by wheat, sourdough bread, banana and a very prominent citrus flavor.  Lots of zesty lemon pith as well as some grapefruit and juicy blood orange.  Very refreshing and although the mouthfeel is kind of heavy, it's pretty easy to drink.

BB 16/03/06, consumed two months after its suggested BB date--I hope it's alright. Served lightly-chilled in a 500ml weizen glass.

A: slightly hazy, dark orange-yellowish hue, coming with a thick, cotton-ish white beer head with superb retention; gently as well as lively carbonation.
S: a fresh banana aroma abounds, neither too harsh, "stinky", nor floating, plus peach+apricot+ripe Cantaloupe melon; added with a lightly ashy note from the foam, yeast-drink's sour-sweet yeastiness, and candyish malts+refreshing wheat-malts all together. Showing no clear structure, but the combination is really nice and harmonious. Surprisingly there's not much hint of cloves in the aroma. But for a hefe-weizen, the nose is still one of the most complex and enjoyable I've ever encountered...
T: sour-sweet, slightly tangy, fruity flavour abounds upfront, almost like green mango+green banana--balanced and delicious; a stream of cottony-textured, wheat-ish flavour slowly takes over the theme, backed by a profound flavour of yeast drink (like Yakult) that is also closely in check. Dryish and sour-sweet aftertone lingers in the back, leaving some tangy mouthfeel at the deep end of the tongue, like after eating some "green" fruits...
M&D: superb carbonation and creamy soft mouthfeel--I suspect the "overly-maturation" of this beer has done some good to the overall texture? A medium-full bodied hefe-weizen, deserving slow sipping. The strength is in its balance, if I may, and it's certainly one of my favourite botted hefe-weizen for sure. Next time I'll find a bottle within its sell-by date to see if it's any different.

A- This brew pours a pale golden color with a slight hazy 1st pour and a much denser 2nd pour. There is a sea of boiling microbubbles that support a thick creamy off-white head that laces with each sip.
S- The rich yeasty aroma with a full banana is followed by a hop note and then a clove note comes through and grows as the beer opens up.
T- A mellow white bread dough and yeasty flavor has a soft clove spice quality and a soft dry pils malt note in the background. The finish is a slight tartness with a slight carbonic acid note in that cleans up the finish. A soft green hop note grows into a nice hop snap as it warms.
M- The medium-light mouthfeel has an effervescent carbonation in the finish.
D- This beer has a nice green flavor that is a bit dry and a bit softer than the aroma and less complex, but very drinkable none the less.

L: Pours hazy straw gold under a 3” finely bubbled bone white to cream colored foam column that takes over 4 minutes to reduce to 1/3 its original size.
S: Bread, faint banana and fainter spice verging on clove. Banana aromas intensify as it warms.
T: Fruity, apple, pear, banana, some light bread with a hint of citric tartness especially on the finish.
F: Medium to medium light body, above average carbonation
O: A true classic.

16.9oz bottle purchased as a single from Beverage Warehouse, Winooski, VT.

Poured into an imperial pint, formed a 1 1/2" off-white head over the cloudy golden amber brew. Head sno-cones above the rim, slowly receding, with sticky lacing. Aroma is banana and cloves. So far, pretty much the best you could hope for.

Taste is wheat sweetness to start, cloves and banana in the middle, with a light bitterness through the close. Mouthfeel is silky smooth, and drinkability is superb. Incredible.

500 ml bottle, no dating that I was able to find on it. Back label is stamped with L 1035. Served in a weizen glass, the beer pours a hazy gold color with about an inch and a half that stuck around for a long time. There's also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like cloves, bananas, and wheat/grainy malt. For the most part I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some bubblegum and a little bit of lemon peel noticable. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's creamy with a good amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good hefeweizen, I'd buy this one again. Certainly worth a try! $3.49 a bottle.
