Since Saint Joseph’s Day on 19 March 1993, Andechs Weissbier Hell has found many new friends. Untreated and bottled in its natural state of yeasty turbidity, this is a top fermented beer for the epicure.

Its light honey colour makes it an immediate eyecatcher. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. At the same time, the creamy, fine pored head invites you to get to know this light Weissbier from the Holy Mountain. You’ll need two takes to enjoy the aromas to the full.

First, distinctive fruity aromas like banana and honeydew melon come to the fore, followed by fine cloves. Andechser Weissbier Hell is a very tangy, refreshing treat with the conviction of a full, soft body. It concludes on a finely balanced interplay of light sweet honey and a delicate acidity with undertones of bitter hoppiness that quickly subside into a harmonious aftertaste.

Andechser Weissbier Hefetrub is a cloudy brownish orange color. The white, rather creamy head remains past the half waypoint with a respectable trail of lace. The bouquet is not quite as prevalent as I prefer, although a nice citrus aroma is very close at hand. The flavor of the first was of a strong banana essence and the second glass leaned towards a citrus taste. I’ll have to conduct an extra round in order to get the best two out of three, it may be tough but I think I’m up for it. The mouthfeel seems of a full body, and a very satisfying drinkability throughout the experience. From the time it hits the nose to the final feel in the throat the Hefetrub is very smooth and enjoyable. I will definitely continue to procure this by the case. Very impressed!

What a treat to finally have this available in the US! I previously had it on-tap at Zum Schneider in NYC in September 2013. This is a review from a bottle I picked up in NJ in February 2014.

Poured about 3/4 of the bottle into a glass, then rolled the bottle in between my hands to dislodge the yeast at the bottom, and poured the remainder. The result was a beautiful, hazy, dark gold beer with a large, frothy white head. Some good lacing on the glass as this one went down.

The aroma was filled with strong phenols and fruity esters, while maintaining its balance. Clove, banana, bubble gum... it's all there and it's delicious.

Light-to-medium bodied and oh so drinkable. Perfectly carbonated. Crisp and refreshing while packing enough flavor to keep you interested throughout the duration of the beer.

This rivals Weihenstephaner as the best hefeweizen I've ever had. Absolute, spot-on version of the style and worth seeking out if you're a weizen fan.

I not always liked this type of beer. In my younger years iw went to Austria on my holidays and i always found these kind of beers for old people. Now i am older and am drinking them! How funny can things go in your life.

This is a hell of a beer in this style to say the least. Today is sunday and the sun is shining if it was summer. It is october though.

Best before march 2012. Poured in an original Franziskaner Weissbierglass. Perfect appearance, could not be better. Cloudy golden yellow fluid with lots of cabonation and a very nice white head, three to four fingers.

Smell is very inviting and like a weissbier should be; fresh and soft, yet crisp. The wheat i very well balanced with the malted barley.

Taste is superbly good amongst his competitors. Soft, round, nice palate.

500ml bottle into a New Glarus weizen glass.

A: Hazy orange body under a rich, full, dense white head that rises stably nearly an inch above the rim of the glass before receding slowly and leaving chunky lace. Gorgeous.

S: Classic, intense Hefeweizen aroma: cloves jump out first with spicy piquancy, followed by perfectly ripe banana, toasted wheat bread, and a pleasant (but not too sweet) hint of bubblegum. Balanced, complex, and enticing.

T: Spicy up front, with banana bread midway through and lots of clean minerality on the finish, along with a distinct note of herbal hop bitterness. Extremely refreshing, full-flavored, and delectably dry. Wonderful beer.

M: Smooth, fairly thin body with a moderate amount of fine, lively carbonation. A bit weak at first, but better after a moment.

O: One of the best examples of the style I've ever had; I can't wait to do a side-by-side with this and Weihenstephaner; I'm really not sure which would come out on top. World class.

A consistent beer with a clove undelayer. A filling very drinkable weizen. Excellent with a pretzel or just alone, as with most Weizen high carbonation leads to less drinking. It is a great beer to find and enjoy in the afternoon, just wish they sold Kloster Andechs in Pennsylvania.

On tap at the pub in Munich, served in the impressive Andechs weizen glass.

Appearance: Straw-colored and nearly opaque, this one arrived with a towering 2 1/2 finger head that retained ridiculously well.

Smell: Yeasty as hell with lots of signature banana and clove along with a slight mineral quality.

Taste & mouthfeel: Banana and a touch of bubblegum open this one up. Surprisingly dry, though still malt-forward and very complex. Medium in body, bordering on full. The finish ends on a dry note with barely a trace of bitterness, though this one's dry nearly from start to finish. Drinkability is through the roof; this beer is complex in a subtle way that never fatigues the palate. I could've drank liters of this.

A - Pours a cloudy gold with a big, firm, foaming head that sits there forever. Masses of small bubbles rise to keep it in place. Very inviting.

S - Banana, clove, phenols, yeast, mixed light fruits. Lovely stuff.

T - Yeasty fruitiness and slight bubblegum kick off with the banana appearing in the middle, which really blooms towards the end when it's joined by a spicy clove flavour. There is a slight medicinal phenol note in there too. Aftertaste is a clean, muted version of the finish and it lingers for some time.

M - Light-medium body. Creamy, but finishes clean and refreshes the mouth. The lively carbonation of the appearance is not as aggressive as expected.

D - An excellent and very drinkable beer. I should have bought more. Highly recommended.

Wonderful hazy yellow in colour, smell of banana, vanilla and bubblegum, taste the same, almost no citric acidity, full and rich in flavour. One of the best Hefeweizens, for sure. Classic. Excellent with chili con carne.

Pours with a copious head, very fluffy and aromatic. Pungent banana, tang and spice in the nose. Orange and straw color.

It has that same Hefeweizen character, but there's something about the Andechs that is absolutely delicious. It's tart, tangy, sweet, bready, phenolic and creamy all at the same time. Really a top-notch brew. The carbonation is very fine and not overpowering, which adds to the incredible smoothness of this brew. I think this more desirable mouthfeel sets it apart from other german Hefeweizens. I wish the Andechs hefe was as common as the other excellent wheat beers in Germany, but alas, it is a rare bird here in Berlin.

*EDIT, March 2011: On a side-by-side with Weihenstephaner, the Andechs holds it own. It's actually more complex, with a great lemony tartness and earthy character that the Weihenstephaner just does not offer. In the end, they're two remarkable wheat beers. Prost!

An extremely well done hefeweizen that is pretty much everything I want in a hefe.

Great aroma...banana, lemons...cloves...

Taste leans a little more towards the lemons and cloves but light banana evident..

Body is crisp, light, and easy to drink. Just finished a two hour bike ride and this is the perfect nourishing beverage I needed. Could drink more than a few of these in a sitting.

A: Yow, one of the best looking Hefeweizens I've ever seen. Beautiful creamsicle orange with a fluffy head. Rising carbonation visible at the bottom and pretty vibrant.
S: Super light and fluffy banana. I know that's the yeast giving it it's creamy quality. Smells like a dessert. Very very faint phenols.
T: Wow, that rivals Weihenstephaner. Really good. My only complaint is that it could be slightly sweeter and or flavorful. But otherwise it's nearly perfect. Excellent blend. It's so well blended, I can't really articulate elements of the flavor. It just is.
M: Mild sting. Fairly soft.
O: One of the best hefeweizens I've had.

Bottle picked up from an overseas shop; thanks to yourefragile for the assist. Served in a SAVOR wine glass alongside the doppelbock.

Pours a cloudy yellow-straw color with a nice and fluffy white head. Good retention and lacing on the way down. The nose has heavy yeast character with nice banana and bubblegum notes, and a touch of clove in the background.

A light breadiness exists in the flavor, serving as the base for the yeast. Nice notes of bubblegum and banana throughout with a touch of spice to the finish. Light-medium body with slight chewiness and a silky finish. Really well made. I'm glad I finally got to try this longtime want.

Pour this one into a weizen glass, because you'll need the extra headroom to accommodate the sizeable pile of off-white froth atop this picturesque beer. The body is almost exactly the same color as orange juice (or Tang - remember Tang?), just a little bit darker; the yeast forms a dense, thick mist that makes the beer opaque. Spicy banana reminiscent of bananas foster dominates (as it should in any good Weissbier), but not without allowing in some lovely nuances of orange juice, apples, lemonade, walnuts, and something earthy and funky that calls to mind the funk of a Flanders red. Relentlessly refreshing with an airy dryness, biting spice, and robust yet light and fruity character. Tons of bananas, apples, cinnamon, clove, bubblegum, lemon, and minty herbal hops. Juicy and full - maybe a bit too heavy, in fact, but still fantastic! A damn good summer beer... or anytime beer!

Also it is surprisingly good with Shropshire Blue!

Gold color with a nice apricot tint after u look an inch or so up from the bottom of the glass. Gets murkier as we get towards the top--which I actually like. Smell is sweet upfront with some bready malty aspects. Slight citrus notes as well. Earthy muddy notes with the all familiar banana and clove esters.

Taste is about as smooth as can be. Very similar to the nose--lots more citrus on the palate than the nose. Also good liquid -bread effect. As far as hefes go, this has got to be right up there amongst the best ive tried in the category.

A- Cloudy golden/orange with a fluffy one finger white head. Spotty lacing on the glass.

S- Bananas, bready yeast, cloves. Classic hefe smells.

T- Sweet bananas, lemon, cloves, malty/breadiness. Spot on what a great hefe should taste like.

M- Medium with heavy carbonation. Very clean finish. Easy drinking.

O- This is truly a great beer. Second only to Weihenstephaner For hefe's I've tried

500ml bottle served in a Weihenstephan Weizen.

A: Pours a cloudy orange to beige color forming a huge white bubbled creamy white head. Excellent retention and many chunks of foam left in the glass. Well, as a matter of fact, it never disappear completely remaining for looong time

S: Great in the nose. Very wheat, with notes of banana and loves as expected. It's also sweet and bready. German yeast

T: Follows the nose. Wheat backbone. Notes of banana esters, cloves, sweet malts and white bread. In overall, a slightly sweet and very smooth beer in the mouth. Simply perfect

M: Light but creamy body. Low carbonation. Veeery smooth sensation. Bready aftertaste

O: Absolutely drinkable beer. Great German beer. Recommended

Had on tap at the Klosterbrauerei Andechs, served in a 0.5L glass in the bier garten. The beer was hazy golden orange with a thick and creamy foam on top. Actually every beer I tried at the brewery can be described as having a creamy texture to the head. The smell had some banana and clove of course, but in addition I found some fruity esters and fresh bread in the aroma. The taste was peppery and fruity, banana/clove also, and an after-taste I'll describe as buttery. The mouthfeel was thick and filling, creamy texture from the effervescence too. Extremely easy to drink, although it's too filling to rate "5" for drinkability. Excellent beer, and highly recommended.

Drank from my Erdinger weizen glass.

A - Woo what a great looking beer. Pours a advocat appearance of hazy lemon honey with a thick white head that stays the distance.

S - Plenty of wheat, clove and banana with some citrus.

T - Nice yeatsy start followed by some decent apricot, lemon and marmalaide flavours. Bana and clove follow with some bubblegum. Very complex.

M - Light to medium body with minmal carbonation

D - In my top three hefes

I had a really exciting, but false alarm moment earlier tonight. Thought I saw Andechs doppelbock at a local store! It was, in fact the dunkelweiss bier. Not as good as the almost impossible to get doppelbock, but sitting next to the dunkel was this one. I remember trying it once before and liking it, so I picked it up.

Poured into a small weizen glass, I basically get 2 different-looking beers out of 2 pours. The first pour shows a bright golden beer with very enthusiastic carbonation and decent head. The second one, with the yeast, is a perfect banana-pineapple color with a thick, short head. I love this kind of beer for appearance, very sexy indeed.

Sweet, almost bubble gum banana smells, a little subdued. The spicy clove character is weak in the nose, but seems to come through alright in the taste. Much more hop presence, bitterness in the finish than expected. After some consideration, I really must bump my score up from good to 4.5 for taste. It's not that different from other great German hefes, but right now, for me, it's a nearly perfecet beer.

It's been a long time since I've had a world-class hefeweizen, and this was a real treat. I almost want to give it all 5s. But then I remember Weihenstephaner. And this one still holds up as a fine example of the style. Highly recommended!

Appearance: Usual cloudy gold body with a bit of an orange cast to it. Very long-lasting head bolstered by an effervescent carbonation.

Smell: Clove and gently plastic-like phenols over sweet wheat malt.

Taste: Lots of lemon tang at first, followed by clove, banana, and spicy phenolics. Richly flavored. As you progress the lemon fades as the malt builds on your palate and a note of vanilla comes through. Some chalky yeast appears in the finish; which is spicier than many, and drier than some others.

Mouthfeel: Light-medium leaning more towards medium in body; bristling effervescent carbonation.

Overall: Unique, but also a classic example of the style. Absolutely worth trying!

This just seemed like a classic wheat beer.

Look: Beautifully cloudy opaque yellow with creamy white head
Smell: You could sense what was coming, though maybe not the highlight of the beer--some rich wheat grain, just a hint of the banana-clove.
Taste: Nice balance. Banana and clove but not in your face about it. Refreshing and dense flavor.
Feel: Thick and rich. Solid.

purchased in a getränkemarkt in Ismaning, Germany; poured into a Weihenstephaner (shhh) .3L glass.

Appearance: nice slightly reddish gold; almost opaque; moderate head but no lace

Smell: wow, more clove and banana than any other that I've had.

Taste: amps up the aromas and adds a hint of citrus and other fruit; light-to-moderate hop bitterness; the flavors sing weissbier.

Mouthfeel: medium balanced by a moderately high level of carbonation.

Drinkability: for hefe lovers, this is really great. To me, the flavors compare to more mundane weissbiers similar to the hop levels in DIPAs compared to the original style.

Beer pours a hazy yellow/gold, just like a hefe should. The smell is just awesome, a really big banana and bubblegum aroma. Taste is great as well, balance between all of your usual hefe elements is perfect and the bubblegum sweetness stands out and gives it something a little unique. Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied and very nice. I had this alongside it much more well-known brother the Doppelbock, and not only was more surprised by this beer, but actually thought it was the better of the two. It's right up there with Live Oak as one of the best hefes I've ever had.

A very nice find indeed, while visiting der Andechser am Dom in Regensburg in September of 2006.

Light orange in color, this Weissbier presented with moderate carbonation, a hazy tinge to it, and a large, pillowy head, for sure. Aromas of big yeastiness, clove and banana fill the sinuses. Good balance on the palate with the fresh-cut grainy malt offering a nice backdrop to that great banana-clove flavour. Slight bitter hoppy twang in the back that was a nice surprise. Very, very nice offering.

Bottle coded L 3443:
Pours a lovely slightly hazy yellow, clear enough for the carbonation that feeds the white head to be seen. That head is fluffy and grows quite large in the pour, and stays on the surface quite thickly through the drink. The nose leans a tad towards the fruity sweet side. I get apple and banana, or maybe a strawberry-banana combo in some whiffs.

The taste starts with the fruits from the nose, but is balanced mid-taste by some fairly neutral hops, likely noble. The flavors work very well together for me. The feel has a decent amount of carbonation, but in some sips seems a little too thin. I was looking for a lighter beer, so this didn't bother me too much.

Hefeweizen isn't usually a style I look for. I tend to like a more subtle version of the style with a fruity flavor, and this one works quite well for that.
