Style: Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Since Saint Joseph’s Day on 19 March 1993, Andechs Weissbier Hell has found many new friends. Untreated and bottled in its natural state of yeasty turbidity, this is a top fermented beer for the epicure.

Its light honey colour makes it an immediate eyecatcher. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. At the same time, the creamy, fine pored head invites you to get to know this light Weissbier from the Holy Mountain. You’ll need two takes to enjoy the aromas to the full.

First, distinctive fruity aromas like banana and honeydew melon come to the fore, followed by fine cloves. Andechser Weissbier Hell is a very tangy, refreshing treat with the conviction of a full, soft body. It concludes on a finely balanced interplay of light sweet honey and a delicate acidity with undertones of bitter hoppiness that quickly subside into a harmonious aftertaste.

A Weissbier that embodies a slice of the Andechs lifestyle: finely yeasty, tangy, and sparkling, it refreshes and renews the thirst for more

500 ml bottle purchased from Lifesource natural Grocers in Salem OR. $3,99 Cloudy bright yellow beer with a huge rocky thick white head. Aromas of lemon and wheat, bready with some banana Taste is way better then the aroma..the banana and bubble gum far more to the front. Nice smooth medium mouth feel. A great traditional weiss bier.

This is quite remarkable stuff. The appearance is clear yellow with an abundance of white foam in the tulip. The aromatics fill the nose and brain with all the German esters. The smell of cloves follows the last touch of bitterness into the aftertaste.

Medium body and malty flavor. Moderately sweet which seems to enhance the cloves and banana. Wheaty and yeasty with a little sharp tang. For all the powerful flavors this is smooth and elegant. I don't think I've had a better Hefeweizen. From the 500 ml bottle purchased at Bottleworks in Seattle.

Very Enjoyable. Pours a hazy straw gold color with a nicely carbonated bubbly white head. Good head retention and some film on the side of the Weizen glass. Aroma hits all the bases, some lemon, lots of cloves and banana and some wheat bitterness. Taste is more of the same. Nicely astringent with lemon and cloves. Classic hefe banana and light wheat bitterness. Very refreshing and good tasting. Mouthfeel is crisp and rich enough for the style. The wheat and cloves provide the real hefe experience. One of the better hefeweizens.

500 ml bottle, no dating that I was able to find on it. Back label is stamped with L 1035. Served in a weizen glass, the beer pours a hazy gold color with about an inch and a half that stuck around for a long time. There's also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like cloves, bananas, and wheat/grainy malt. For the most part I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some bubblegum and a little bit of lemon peel noticable. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's creamy with a good amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good hefeweizen, I'd buy this one again. Certainly worth a try! $3.49 a bottle.

L: Pours hazy straw gold under a 3” finely bubbled bone white to cream colored foam column that takes over 4 minutes to reduce to 1/3 its original size.
S: Bread, faint banana and fainter spice verging on clove. Banana aromas intensify as it warms.
T: Fruity, apple, pear, banana, some light bread with a hint of citric tartness especially on the finish.
F: Medium to medium light body, above average carbonation
O: A true classic.

Pours a hazy yellow colour with a big compact head. Aroma of banana, cloves and citrus (less than usual for the style). Medium body, fizzy carbonation with bubbles coming up all the time. Taste of banana, cloves and citrus.

An extremely well done hefeweizen that is pretty much everything I want in a hefe.

Great aroma...banana, lemons...cloves...

Taste leans a little more towards the lemons and cloves but light banana evident..

Body is crisp, light, and easy to drink. Just finished a two hour bike ride and this is the perfect nourishing beverage I needed. Could drink more than a few of these in a sitting.

There are better-looking hefes and they certainly have more lace.
Aroma also comes in below average, given that I am used to a wild banana thing conquering all else.
But Ancechser's malt-preference comes through, but then some strong lemon-pepper-hops subtracts too much from what would otherwise be a nice creamy wheat.
Overall, I like Andechser and how monks survived for 6 centuries offered this to pilgrims coming to a nearby shrine. Sometimes hard to get in North America, get it if you can.
Listed on the "1001" and very much deserves this.

From the barrel @ Kloster Andechs. I considered reviewing, given its high quality, but in a place with such a view and atmosphere, I think it better to just enjoy.

A classic. Canonical hefeweizen. One of the best.

A very fine weissbier- yeasty but crisp with the requisite clove and banana flavors, but light and snappy rather than creamy or chewy. Goes down smooth- an especially nice hot weather beer.

Cloudy yellow color, with minimal head, but flavor abounds. Banana, bubblegum, bread, etc. Unfiltered adds some extra body to the mouthfeel. Gorgeous!

Pours a very turbid golden color. The head is three fingers high and white in shade. Intensely frothy and thick, retention is excellent. And annoying. There isn't much (if any) lacing that sticks to the glass, though.

The aroma is well-spiced, bringing lots of clove notes. I also get some nice wheat, and some noble hopping. This one is a bit low on banana and bubblegum esters, but I don't care. This beer's nose just smacks of delicate balance and classy refinement.

It tastes even better, somehow. I get a nice clove flavor at first, which then evolves into bursting notes of vanilla, cream, and banana. The finish is lightly hoppy, as well. Wheat malts show up in spurts - combined with the gentle hopping, it manages to balance this beer beautifully. And now, I'm getting some citrusy flavors (like lemon, citrus, and lime). The only real flaw I can taste is how the aftertaste is a little laggard in quality. Still, a fantastic weissbier.

At first, I think it feels creamy, thick, and dessert-like - but it doesn't finish that way. No, it finishes crisp, dry, and refreshing. That's an amazing dichotomy that's hard to pull off, yet this one pulls it off with aplomb. Carbonation is quite subtle, yet sufficiently fills the mouth (making the texture seem even softer).

When done right, this is one of my favorite styles. This is pulled off fabulously, fabulously right. The only real flaw is a touch of finishing staleness - so if I ever try this fresh, this could get really close to a 5. I'm serious. All together, this is an absolute must try for those who find it.

500ml bottle, poured and yeast swirled into glass.

Cloudy gold with a thick, dense head. A solid skim coat for the duration and plenty of lacework.

Aromatics are filled with plenty of bananas and cloves. A nice balance between the two with lots of yeasty essence.

Medium bodied with a creamy, pillowy mouthfeel.

Husky wheat with cloves and bananas on the palate. Bitterness to balance and traces of honey.

Finishes with plenty of Bavarian character and highly crushable.

Great beer, would love to try a fresh one.

Pours a nice light gold with smallish head and minimal lacing. Nose is classic here, but not as big as some other top weissbier. Yeast and esters...wish there was more. Taste is also classic, but again, not huge. Mouthfeel is a big rough with all the carbonation. Overall, a very good beer, but I was expecting something world class.

This just seemed like a classic wheat beer.

Look: Beautifully cloudy opaque yellow with creamy white head
Smell: You could sense what was coming, though maybe not the highlight of the beer--some rich wheat grain, just a hint of the banana-clove.
Taste: Nice balance. Banana and clove but not in your face about it. Refreshing and dense flavor.
Feel: Thick and rich. Solid.

Served cold from 500ml bottle into Schneider Weisse glass.

L) Light orange-tinged yellow, very hazy. Relatively thin slightly off-white head.

S) Slightly sweet orange-marmalade.

T) Light gingery slight banana-clove flavour. No bitterness. No real 'depth' of flavour compared to some weizens.

F) Fizzy and refreshing, this one is great for a warm day.

O) I've been drinking quite a few weizens recently and honestly this one is in the bottom half of the league, which is a shame from such a solid brewery. Having said that, its a good Bavarian Weisse, so worth a go if you are a fan of the style and can't see a better option.

L - bright golden, hazy. Nice two-finger head.
S - very impressive and intense for hefeweizen. Kaleidoscope of flowers, carnations, bananas.
T - the same as the smell - fruity and flowerish.
F - medium-bodied, light carbonization.
O - very fine hefeweizen. Strongly recommended for style fans.

L: Bright golden, copper color. Fluffy head that condenses, some lacing. Very cloudy
S: Typical smell of the style, banana bread and clove. A little bit milder than some of the heavy hitters like Weihenstephaner or Ayinger.
T: Very nice, somewhat typical of the style. Banana bread, bubblegum, clove. Got a little pepper bit on the finish. Also a nice creamy flavor. Not as sweet as some others I've had but I find this nice and balanced.
F: What I like about this one is it has a bit of a crispiness to it. Also great smoothness, definately a little heavy but no different than any other hefe.
O: Solid beer, great example of the style. Only thing is compared to others it feels like it is missing something. Its maybe just a little more subdued or milder than other hefes I've had before.

Pours yellow, medium cloudy with a very nice and fluffy white head. Smells quite good: yeasty, creamy banana and white pepper. The profile is as simple and traditional as can be but it's executed damn near perfectly--the only better-smelling hefe I can think of is Weinstephaner's, which is the universally agreed upon standard bearer.

Tastes fantastic. Melon and banana start things off, with the addition of the former a welcome surprise. The wheatmalt is less spicy than I'm used to, which leaves room for wonderful fruit complexities. Bananas and melons continue throughout, getting gradually more clovey and peppery, ending on long, lingering sweetness that's like is bananas made juice instead of smoothies. The body is a bit thinner than I'm used to the the style, but it leads to a wonderful crispness that makes the beer more quaffable.

A+ example of its style.

this is hands down the best hefe i have ever had. i know people rant and rave about their dopplebock, but this is next level for me, truly incredible. you think you know a hefe or something, think youve had every possible deviation and variation and alteration that exists on it, and frankly a lot of them get pretty samey, but this is the king of the heap. its appropriately cloudy, goldenrod colored, with several inches of muted grayish white foam on top. great retention. it smells rustic and old, very very traditional, with a yeasty banana cream complexion, and raw wheat as its base. its a simple equation, but its done expertly well here, and one sip confirms that this yeast is something special. silky rich banana notes and earthy pale malted wheat work wonders together, lasting forever, and hinting at candied lemon rind, black pepper, and something a little more herbal. its got that pleasant old dusty german thing going on, but it also feels really fresh to me. carbonation is intense, and there is an awesome creaminess and weight to the feel. im not sure how you can make a hefe any better than this one, and the fact that its not rare, and is super super cheap makes it that much better. german brewers are going to start getting a lot more of my attention. cant say enough about this one.
