Very Good
Spezial HellSpezial Hell
Notes: Its clear gleaming look and firm, fine pored head goes hand in hand with its fresh and pure aroma. Malty nuances are the first impressions.

Spezial Hell is pleasantly tangy with a full, round malt body that cannot fail to fascinate. The soft flavour carries a distinctive balance of sweet accents and bitter hoppiness.

It concludes on equally soft malty nuances – a classical festival beer in the tradition of old Bavarian brewing.

On-tap @ The Grand Delancey in New York, NY.

Pale gold, brilliant clarity, big white foam on top with great retention.

Lots of sweet malt and floral hops in the aroma and flavor. Medium bodied with a creamy, almost chewy texture. Finishes on the sweeter side. Really delicious. I don't know if I could make this my "all night" drinking beer due to its strength, but it's fantastic as it is.

On tap at WECO Beer Garden

Clear gold with a finger's fine white head. Spotty lacing, near full cap.
Bread, grass, light grape aromas
Sweet bread, floral, malt flavors.
Crazy drinkable to my taste.
I'm looking for this packaged. It would be my favorite fest bier.

De Labirratorium. En copa hefe de Bavaria. Leyendo C9 Ch7. Buena helles, con las notas maltosas y la bebilidad esperadas en el estilo, y quizás un leve toque oxidado de esos que incluso mejoran la experiencia

Pours a clear, golden coloration with visible coloration and a medium, frothy head. Smells of doughy, slightly bready malt and quite grassy, herbal hops. Taste is great balance between doughy, bready malt and quite grassy, somewhat herbal hops, as well as a light spiciness in the finish. Finishes quite crisp, with a light bitterness and some doughy malt, grassy hops and just a hint of spice lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and medium/strong carbonation.

This starts out with a really nice, full and slighty sweet malt presence which turns more hoppy towards the finish, with some quite grassy and lighter herbal, spicy hops, up until a great, crisp and refreshing finish with a light bitterness. I really like the light herbal, spicy accents here, which really do an excellent job of balancing out the sweet malt and just giving this a somewhat unique flavor profile that is just a little more interesting than your average Festbier.

another brilliant beer from these guys that i was stoked to find on tap this weekend, really flavorful and good, seemingly a little more malt forward than many of their other pale lagers i have had, a little stronger too, but still dry, just a bit more substantial, perhaps some lightly toasted aspect in the grain bill, and harvesty and autumnal without being as rich and objectively malty as the marzen types that are more popular this time of year. its still a festbier type though, and fits right in large dimpled mug, frothy white headed, bubbly as can be, and just off clear with a slightly muted luster. pretty beer. smells almost a little wheaty to me, still with german pils type malt in here and just a little richer crystal likely in the mix. the yeast is old worldy and aromatic and flavorful in here, day old bread, biscuit, and dough, along with earthy minerals and a cool crispness that makes this refreshing even with its bigger body. dry nuttiness, noble hops, and this wonderful yeast and water combination. patient beer, seemingly nutrient rich, and dynamite with fried food. for how often i have lamented the relative lack of availability of the headiest of beers here in idaho, we seem to be doing really well with the german stuff, and i, for one, and thankful for that! andechs can do no wrong!

On tap:
Crystal clear straw gold, with an uninteresting head. Nose is a mix of light grain and bread with some floral to slightly fruity hops. Some mineral notes sneak in.

Taste is a little more bland version of the smell, with the malt seeming a little watered down from expectations. This gets into feel, too, thought it’s a lighter style. Bitter side adds a hint of noble spice/grass. Carbonation is about expected, maybe just a tad light on this pour.

Had it right from the brewery outside of Munich. Honestly, the church attached to the brewery is as stunning as the beer and food! A beautiful complex baroque church, which supports the Kloister.

As for the beer, this beer was amazing, I was able to down about 2 liters of beer at lunch. I would rate them up with Augistiner in Munich as the two best Hells I had in Munich. Even their Radler (shandy in the USA) was incredible!

Many thanks to Snowcrash000 for this bottle.

A - Bright, vibrant clear gold colored pour with very active cascading carbonation.

S - Biscuity, bready, and bread crust aroma with dry delicate spicy earthiness.

T - Nice consistent soft crackery malt from start to finish and ends with some earthy spicy grass bitterness to balance things out.

M - Medium body and very dry. Coats the mouth with earthy spicy light lemon and floral.

O - Really enjoying this beer.

Clear yellow, white foamy head, excellent retention and lacing.

Bready aroma with a grassy finish that is mirrored in flavor.

Light and crisp, well balanced, finishes exceptionally dry.

Great Helles, but a little too dry of a finish. Prost.

Love andechs, including their other helles, but this was disappointing. Somewhat cloudy yellow with a white head. Smell is more bitter than one would expect from a helles, malt is closer to cracker than bread, grainy. Taste works together better, malts still dryer and less full but accent the hops and general palate well. Feel has a higher carbonation than preferred, great crispness though, with some grainy aspects to the maltwork.

On-tap at Andechser Mannheim, Mannheim, Germany

A: The beer is crystal clear light yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high bright white head that died down, leaving a short head on the surface and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of cracker yeast are present in the nose along with notes of noble hops.
T: Like the smell, the toasted is rather malty and has lots of flavors of cracker malts. Only a bit of floral and grassy hop flavors are present, but the hops contribute a light- to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied and rather dry on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This Helles is very easy to drink. I enjoyed the dryness.

Straw to golden color and crystal clear. Modest head but it leaves many streaks and spots.

The smell is grainy and malty in equal measure. There's bit of sourness to the nose that I didn't expect. A little beef stew in the background.

The taste is crisp and clean with some raw grain on the tongue. The carbonation is high with a standard body for the style. The finish is grainy, which reminds me of many a brewery tour (smell wise). Dry and clean aftertaste which is brief.

Freshly tapped keg, way better. Crisp and hoppy, an excellent Festbier.

Draft at Laschets:
Pale gold, initial fluffy head of foam, patchy skim, minimal spotty lace.
Smells like wet cereal, corn flakes, sweet bran.
Taste is cereal forward, sweet and sticky grain, wet paper, sugary.
Light bodied, aftertaste lingers unfortunately.
Overall this wasn't very good, not in the same realm as Vollbier Hell.

Had on tap. Pours clear, gold in color with 1/3 inch head. Taste is wheat bread, and grassy pilsner malt Light bodied, sweet, with moderate carbonation. Makes for a very clean and classic German helles lager. Could drink several glasses of this one.

On tap at Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a clear light orange-ish color, with a small wispy head, and a lot of lacing.

This smells like sweet biscuits, pilsner malt, and grassy hops.

This is awesome. I love these lighter festbiers- this is basically a helles with killer grassy and floral hop character, with a light grain sweetness, with a nice biscuity malt character.

This is very light bodied, and super crisp, with a good level of carbonation.

This is pretty killer. It's so unbelievably drinkable.
