What a place to visit, I recommend any lover of high quality malt beverages makes a pilgrimage to this site. From Munich hauptbahnhof it's very easy to get here (S5 train to final stop, then look for the Andechs bus for a 10 minute ride to the Kloster).

It's set on a hill with a beautiful view of Bavaria, you can actually see the alps in the distance when it's clear (like today). I had a total of 4 beers while here, sampled in several locations within the klosterbrauerei: first the bier garten, then the beer hall, then the restauarant. Each location was perfect, I probably preferred the beer hall overall due to the medievel feel to the place, with exposed timbers and stucco and whatnot.

Everything was reasonably priced, the doppelbock dunkel was 3.30 euros for a 0.5L glass, the wiess bier was maybe 2.70 euros. Every beer was delicious, and the monastary buildings give a very inviting ambience.

I just realized the review is too positive, heading for hero worship. So I'll list a negative: the line to get a beer in the beer hall is too long, it takes 10-15 minutes each time you get a beer. With 3500+ seats, I'd like to think they could set this up differently, allowing for quicker ordering.

If you find yourself in Munich, this place is a no-brainer.

This place is heavenly!! You can sit inside, in the high-vaulted-ceiling hallway, where it's loud and smoky (typically German). Or, when the weather is decent, go outside onto the patio and soak in the sunshine as you soak in the suds. Bier here is outstanding, although you can only get 3 on tap (Hell, Weizen and Doppelbock). Service is rated as well as you want to rate yourself, since it's all self-service. Tell the cashier what bier you want and pay, then give the cask-man your receipt. Mmmm good!! They have 2 food counters; one for cold-cuts and cheeses, the other for warm pork or leberkase and kartoffelsalat. Quite tasty! If you ever get to Munchen, you MUST visit Andechs; it's only about 1 hour south. Prosit!!

I took a day trip out to Andechs while I was in Munich for Oktoberfest, and I am very happy I did so. The monastery is situated in the countryside a short bus ride from Herrsching, which is itself a 30-40 minute ride on the S-bahn from Munich. After you exit the bus, you must walk up a steep hill to the monastery, church, and restaurants, but it is worth the walk. The church itself is quite beautiful, and you can try to climb all the way up the steeple tower, if you dare.

As for the beer, there is a main indoor seating beer hall where you can purchase your mugs of the wonderful Andechser bier (there were 4 or 5 styles on-tap during my visit, including the world famous Doppelbock, the Jubiläumsbier, an Apfelweisse, and the Helles). You go up to a window and pay for your beer and get a token, and then walk a short way to another window where you get your mug of beer for your token. You can then drink you beer inside in the beer hall, or outside on a nice patio with a view of the countryside. There is also a smaller cafe restaurant on the other side of the patio where you can get coffee and snacks. Finally, there is a restaurant/cafeteria where you can order meals to eat with your liters of beer. The schweinhaxe was crisp and tasty.

The beers were, of course, wonderful. The Doppelbock was so delicious and easy to drink. 1.5 L went down smoothly. It is a good thing you can get here on public transportation (just don't miss the last bus back to the S-bahn).

Service was pretty minimal, as everything is ordered from a window or a counter, but that did not detract from the experience. The prices were reasonable. One comment, however, is that if you want to buy bottled beer to take with you, you can purchase it at a kiosk or in the gift shop, but four bottles cost a little over 7 Euros, and these same four bottles can be had in Munich for 5-6 Euros. But not a big deal, and perhaps worth the convenience.

I recommend all beer lovers visit this wonderful place as it is definitely worthy of the pilgirmage.

Went with a group of friends to lay on the beach in Herrsching, we had a few beers there then went here. It was actually a legitimate hike getting there through residential neighborhoods and a small forest. It is a climb so bring hiking shoes, I accidentally stepped in a mudpit. Once you get there you know you've earned your beer, it takes about 50 minutes to an hour.

The church is beautiful, there is 3 Biergartens and a big Bräustüberl. There is also a gift shop. We went to the Biergarten/deck just outside fo the main hall (the one pictured). The food is more or less cafeteria style. A Maß of Helles only costs 5,60 from the cask. The line for the beer was non-existent when I walked up, it was smooth and easy.

The food is mediocre at best, the schweinhaxe was overcooked but the pretzels were very good; but the beer is cheap and amazing. Most of it is pretty cheap, i was in a group of 10 and we bought a ton of food, plenty for all of us and it was only 4.00 per person.

This place is a must for people traveling in Bavaria.

I was lucky to spend several days in Andechs in July. From my work location, I found myself only a pleasant walk through the woods to the large monastery. Beers are served in regular (.5L) and large (1 full liter) mugs. The venue has plenty of seating capacity, an upscale restaurant and a walk through cafeteria/deli. I used the latter where there were a good variety of meats and cheeses, huge Bavarian pretzels, and other offerings - most or all made by monks in Andechs, as is the beer of course. Good food, good prices, great beer. The patio has an excellent view over the rolling hills, mostly farmland, and is highly recommended, weather permitting.

The large halls and patio indicate this place must receive large numbers of visitors at some times. Clearly, more than the occasional visitor drinks too much ... or at least that's what I inferred upon spotting the massive vomit station in the men's room: a very impressive stainless steel structure with, apparently, well-positioned handles and a large 'target'. Having mentioned this, I should add that the rest room, and every where else I ventured was spotlessly clean.

Visitors, especially music lovers, should be sure to see the cathedral. Highly ornamented and visually stunning, it houses a fine organ and the burial place of Carl Orff.

Can visit as a day trip from Munich.

After a very somber visit in Dachau, I needed enlightenment. What better place than on top of the hill at Andechs?

Too bad we got there a bit late, our hotel was back in the village and we had to walk all the way up, so we missed the brewery and distillery tours. The huge mountain of plastic cases near the brewery was quite a sight, and on the way up we spotted a few hop vines that seemed almost ripe for picking. The church is pretty impressive, with a cool sundial...right underneath a clock. Maybe they needed a second opinion! The view for up top is very nice, it was clear out so we could see the mountains, the whole area is very quaint, kind of Vermont-ish.

It was getting a bit chilly out, so we sat inside in the main section where the cafeteria style food and Beer counters were. I went straight for a mass of dopplebock from the cask, and my girlfriend got a glass of wine. What I don't get is that they charged a 3 euro deposit for her wine glass, the kind with a green stem that you find absolutely everywhere in the country, and charged me nothing for the kick-ass Andescher mug my Beer was served in. It was absolutely fabulous, rich yet quaffable, well worthy of the hype. They had 2 more casks and Andechs bottles as well.

As with a vast majority of the places we've been to, clientele was in their late 50s or older, including the charming German couple who shared our picnic table and some of the food we got. We went for some cheese and bread, all made on-premises, and they were quite good.

Great place to spend an afternoon if you're in the area.

The Andechs Monastery is a MUST visit when in Munich area, and I can only endorse others reviews.
To get there from Munich, catch the S5 suburban train from the Hauptbahnhof to Herrshing - about 45 minutes, and then the 951 bus from outside the terminus station at Herrshing to Kloster Andechs. I would recommend you get a train just before 9am, then get the bus from Herrshing at 10.10, but beware, there could be hundreds of people with the same idea, and the bus so full you cannot get on! You can walk from Herrshing, but its about an hours steep uphill walk of 3 miles.

The bus drops you at the car park at the foot of the Andechs Monastary, so just a short uphill walk.

The Monastery church interior is amazing and must be seen. The Beer Gardens, Terrace and Restaurant areas are all close together, and normally three Andechs beer available from wooden casks - the Hell, Weiss and Dobblebock Dunkel, and all are fantastic. There are various food options, from hot pork slices, the knuckle joint, cold meats and cheeses, breads and salads at a counter, then take them out to the Beer Garden, or Terrace, or into the two restaurant halls.

Great atmosphere in the Beer Garden and Terrace and VERY popular in fine weather, so best to arrive early to be sure of getting a seat!

The full range of beers are available in bottles and presentation packs, as well as other souvenirs of the place.

Highly recommended, and I can hardly wait to go again!!

A wonderful "must do" trip if you're in the Munich area. Easily accessible via the s-bahn system and either a short bus or taxi ride from the station.
The entire atmosphere is just terrific. A large self-service style beerhall (no tablecloth in sight) that of course just happens to carry some of the best half-dozen beers in the whole world.
I was there in the winter so I didn't get to experience the outside biergarden area quite so much, but you can see how nice it must be in warmer weather. The view is stunning.
Beers were roughly 2 euros each and are served in the default .50 mug, or the larger one for about 50% more for the Helles and Dunkel.
Selections are a Helles, Dunkel, Weiss, Doppelbock, and a few special selections. The specials in the winter of '05 were the AMAZING Apfelweiss, and Dunkel Jubilaumsbier. You also can order a Radler if that's your cup of tea. There are also several varieties of Schnapps distilled at Andechs including peach and apple. A nice couple from Hamburg gave us a try of the apple and it was wonderful.
Food is typical hearty bavarian fare...but done REALLY well.
English is typically spoken and mostly understood, but knowing a few German phrases is a big plus.
It just doesn't get much better than this. If you're in Munich, you'll want to hit up the Hofbrauhaus and Andechs.

Because all of the beers are so wonderful, you'll want to likely have a friend ordering one thing while you order another...and just split the beers. This way you can try everything without becoming incoherant due to the potency of many of the brews!

An amazing thing is that the place is FULL of locals. We arrived at 10AM thinking we'd be the first ones only to discover 25 locals that appeared to have arrived some time earlier. By noon, the main hall was full...and on a random Wednesday no less. People in Germany know a good thing and take advantage of it!

EDIT: In the summertime the place opens up quite a bit. There's a huge patio area with an additional bar area, and even a second biergarten on your way up the hill with its own taps (which may have items not available in the main hall). Also, the Apfelweiss turned out to be a simple juice-blend item (which is still awesome), but you could probably have them make it using other beers as well.

I've been here twice over the years when visiting Germany and I've never walked away dissapointed in my experience. The atmosphere is second to none, it sits on top of a big hill on the outskirts of Herrsching and has an amazing view from the patio/outside dining area. It's actually a monestary and it's really cool to walk around and just explore the place.

The food is very good and reasonably priced. Both times I've been there, we've sat outside. I can't say enough how much we enjoyed this place. The food was good but the beer is what made the experience. I really prefer their lager and wheat beers to several of the other brewers in the region (just my personal preference). I brought my dad here and he wasn't too impressed with the pork as it comes pretty much on the bone. I found it humerous, knowing what to expect, and our family being German by heritage makes it even more humerous. He moaned about the food but had no complaints whatsoever about the beer!!

My only gripe is that I wish they would distribute their beer in North America, I really miss this place back home in the U.S. The only thing I have to ponder are good memories and a nice Weiss beer glass in my china cabinet. If you're in the Herrsching area, this is a must stop.

Was encouraged to visit Cloister Andech's during my visit to Munich in May, 2004. After a long day of touring King Ludwig's castles we almost returned directly to Munich without stopping for a visit. Thank goodness we did stop. Signs directed us fairly easily to the monestary, which is located on top of a hill. The enormous parking lot at the base of the hill was mostly filled and buzzing with celebratory folk. Up the hill we walked, past oodles of booths selling knick-knacks, until we climbed the stairs to the biergarten.

What an unbelievable place. Long tables of revelling beer-drinkers enjoying the company they've come with and eagerly making friends with whomever grabs the seats next to them ("It's hier frei?"). There is no table service, although they clean up after you leave pretty quite. The line for beer is long, but moves very fast. A different line is for food and, unfortunatley, the selection is quite limited. I was really hungery and ordered the most substantial item on the menu...scheinhaxe (pig's foot, hairs still intact). I do NOT like pork, but it was actually quite good. My wife ate a pretzel that she had to hold onto with both hands because it was the size of her torso. Around us sat an international audience. We met people from towns nearby, a couple from Canada, and then who sits down next to me, but Nobel Prize winner Demond Tutu. WTF? Apparently, he was visiting the monestary and wanted to see the brewery in action. He ordered a Helles (light) and split a scheinhaxe with his wife.

Too bad my wife couldn't drive a stick-shift or I would have had many many beers. Sweet, clean, and divine. Whoa unto me, I had to drive back to Munich and could only enjoy one Helles and one Dunkel (dark). We sat in a baudry section in the main outside seating. Inside seating is available and a quiet outside section was available on the patio that overlooked the barn and local terrain.

If you ever make it to Munich, you MUST find a way to travel the 30-45 minutes south-eastish to visit this fantastic place. Monestary? Or heaven on earth?

Went here this past winter while visiting Munich. It was an easy day trip from downtown Munich out here...took the train to the last stop on S5 (Hershing) then took a cab from the train station to the monestary. You could probably walk it but there was a ton of snow when we were there so the cab was just easier. The atmosphere at this place was pretty cool. It was like a cafeteria style beer hall, you go get your food then there is a seperate place to get beers. In the next room over there are big long tables to sit down and enjoy the food and drink. I had a dopplebock which was amazing. Overall this was a very good day trip, probably my favorite of anything we did while in the Munich area.

Oh how I wish I had more time to spend here.

Spent the night in Fussen, and visited King Ludwig's castle. Pretty cool. Then drove the two-hour drive (with poor directions, you can make it there quicker with better directions, I'm sure). Finally we arrive in Andechs. There are plenty of signs to direct you to the brewery. We pull into what looks like a Wal Mart parking lot. I wasn't impressed.

But then you begin to walk up the hill and it becomes more serene. You see the tower of the monestary. Old German guys having fun. Laughing, and happy people.

Finally you get to the Brewhouse. It's a bit confusing at first. Not really any table service. There are seperate lines for beer and food. Plus at least 2 lines for food. One for small stuff like pretzels (brezes) -- you've got to have a pretzel. And another area where you can buy the brauts and schweinhaxe. The food is all tasty, and while a bit pricey, it's worth the money for the experience.

Go to the beer line. Start with the Weissbier Hell.
Then move to the Doppelbock. Oh man, that's good.
Before you get too drunk on the Doppelbock, have an Applebeer, or a Hell Lager. The beer is all top notch. The scenery is great. Everybody's having a nice time. The food is good. I want to go back!

As previous reviewers have stated, this is truly a special place. A place of religious significance for more than a thousand years, a place a fine brewing significance for five or six hundred. Wow. The onion domed towers from the cathedral are visible from some distance away. Once you reach the hilltop you know that this is indeed everything everyone has said here on BA and more. Just about an hour outside of Munich on the S-Bahn (toward Herrsching) but well worth the trip. Plan on spending at least a half day here. Visit the cathedral, wander around the grounds and visit the shop. I picked up some cool glassware at a reasonable price. Hang out for some great beers and basic fare, self serve style. Meet some new friends in the Bier garden…enjoy the view. When we visited they were serving a Helles, Spezial Hell, Weisse, Doppel and Radler (beer w/ lemonade). Be sure to have the Dopplebock…the monks sacrificed little while fasting on this liquid bread. Be sure to make it a point to visit here if anywhere nearby.

Well, after Beirman9's overwhelming recommendation that we visit Kloster Andechs, David and I decided to get the heck out of Munich and go exploring. We took the train, and at the last stop, the German Family riding with us asked if we were going to Andechs. We said yes, and that we were taking the bus. They convinced us that walking up would be more pleasant, and really build our appetite for the beer and food...they weren't kidding!! After about an hour of walking through the snow covered woods, we made it to the top. We found a table out back and then it was time for the good stuff: The food and beer are outstanding! David got the Dopplebock and I got the Helles, both in a mass. It's all self serve: you grab and tray and point out what you want, and they serve up a fine plate of traditional regional specialties. You also go the the beer line, order yourself a beer, pay, get your ticket, then give it to one of the beermen to pull you a beautiful beer. The German family was very nice to us: they shared some of the delicasies with us, we bought them a few drinks, they bought us a four pack of beer to take home...the whole experience was overwhelmingly one of the best of our trip. True camraderie found, plus excellent beer and food.

A little bit of heaven in every glass is how I think of Andechs. Where else can you go and see a 15th century baroque church with their own beer garden? The beers are all of outstanding quality with dopplebock available year round. The only disappointment had to be in the limited food selection in the beer hall. When the beer garden is open the BBQ ribs and chicken are both outstanding. The beerhall itself can get quite smokey so the beer gardens are a good plus with a fantastic view of the countryside.

This place is still a monestary, with a fairly good sized brewery adjacent to it.

The brewery is expanding, and there were 4 new conical stainless steel fermentation tanks ready to be installed. Sitting next to them was a wooden cart full of spent grains... presumably to feed their livestock. They still produce organic dairy products and their milk, yogurt and cheese were all really good.

They have a stuberl, which is more of a self-serve cafeteria/beer-hall, and excellent value. We opted to relax & get served at the Gasthof restaurant. The food was REALLY good and reasonable priced. My wife had a nice plate of their cheeses, I had a generous portion of meat. Their fresh beer (vom fass) was really good, though I thought their dopple was a bit of a let-down (I enjoyed their other stuff more).

I picked up a stein from their gift shop for around $5 (similar to what the hofbrau house in munich sells for $18.50).

We visited in the last week of march, so there was still a fair bit of snow around... we took the bus from/to the trainstation.

The lake down by the train station was still frozen, but there were plenty of people out walking, and even a few people drinking beer in the sun!
