Clear brown color, just slightly reddish, beige head. Aroma has nice smoked malts, slight toasted malt acidity, grains and just a hint of ham. Taste has also smoked grains, not too intense but really tasty. Slightly sweet and malty on the finish but it fits really well. Light to medium body with soft carbonation. Really tasty and easy drinking rauchbier.

This rauchbier pours an amber brown color with a thick foamy tan head. The smell is fairly mild, especially for a rauchbier, but it’s really great. It is a mix of smoked sausage and biscuity malts. The flavor is no less excellent. It of course has a nice smoky flavor, in this case sort of a smoked sausage quality, as well as a nice biscuit flavor from the malts, some grainy earth qualities, and finishes with a fairly dry, piney hop character that is more pronounced than the average rauchbier. This hop character makes a sort of smoked wood impression that lingers on the tongue. The body is medium, but slightly on the heavy end of that. When talking about rauchbiers you of course have to talk about the smokiness, which is the whole point of them. In my experience the German rauchbiers have been more smoky then their American counterparts. This beer falls somewhere between the average of the two. It has a pronounced smokiness, but is more sedate than most if not all of the Schlenkerla rauchbiers. Although I did find the Schlenkerla marzen to be the most mild of their beers, so maybe there’s just something about a marzen that cuts the smokiness a little bit. Anyway, it’s a really well balanced rauchbier and I think it’s great.

Another great product from the Brauerei Spezial. From the bottle, it pours a light brown with a malty, smokey aroma. The taste is the same: malty with a bit of smoke. Wow! Try a Seidla!

Poured from the bottle into a pils style glass. Best before Oct 14th 2014.

A dark amber body, with hints of orange hues towards the bottom and quite dark. The beer though has a very good amount of clarity though through the center making it that much more impressive. Head is faint tan with a good two fingers. Settles to a nice thick tan collar as well that is fine in carbonation.

The aroma is exquisite. Strong malted smoke and bbq. Lots of toasty chips and small amounts of sweetness. About as good as it gets. Nothing more needs to be said.

Palate though is quite surprising. Very light feel, with a more unexpected palate. Very light body with classic roast, but there is a big aftertaste of cinnamon and nutmeg like sweetness on the finish. Faint banana like quality and a bit of clove also. Fascinating hints of caramel and of course classic beechwood smoke. Light tannic finish as well, with a very complex character.

It's an amazing beer, and has some interesting definitely marzen character to it as well. However, it seems to lack in the density department a bit, but this delivers amazingly regardless.

Served in a Krug at Brauerei Spezial on 4/7/2013. Pours a translucent amber with a dense, buttermilk-colored 1.5 inch head. Nose expresses smoked pork, oak and some buttery notes. Taste consistent with nose with some earthy hops bittering at the finish. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with a carbonation just shy of prickly and a semi-dry finish. Not as balanced as Schlenkerla's Marzen, but very good nonetheless. A solid barometer for the style.

50cl serving in a seidel at Spezial, Bamberg

A - Mahogany body with excellent clarity. Head retention and lacing is average/poor

S - Bacon domininant with a hint of this spicey stornaway black pudding note i keep getting from Spezial beers.

T - Bacon and spicey black pudding up front, a bit of citrus sourness coming in. Higher hop presence in finish than expected

M - Medium carbonation/body

D - Not enough malt sweetness for a classic marzen. A nice rauch presence but definitely not a classic flavour profile.
