honstly a pretty good lager. drank a fair few of these in my travels there, but this is my first in the usa. i remember how refreshing this thing was after a half marathon, but i find it a little less appealing in an american craft beer context now. its a basic blonde lager, no additives or preservatives or anything, pretty darn refreshing really, but nothing out of the ordinary. very well carbonated, fresh pilsener type grains, cerealy, with a classic lager yeast. the finish is super clean and quick, light lager all the way. a tiny bit skunky in this green bottle, but not enough to turn me off. watery body, super thin and light. i can see the appeal in hot weather, and i would take it over a bud or a coors or something, but its well below the craft lager standard we have set here in the states. compared to its peers though, its one of the better options.

Picked up on a whim after a New Zealander who frequents my store gave a great review of it. Perhaps it is national bias, but my favourite beer style is the Euro style pale lager, so I gave it a go.

The green bottle suggests there would be some skunkiness, but surprisingly there was not much in the smell; at least when compared to something like Heineken, which is always skunky beyond repair whenever I have it. Pours a urine yellow colour much like any euro lager, with maybe half a pinky of head. The smell is good - a little grainy and a little corny, but nothing offensive. The taste is that of a well made euro lager - a little bitter, but not so bitter that my face cringes at all. It is a little sweet, but not as sweet as something like Viru. another euro lager which I swear had some liquid sucrose or something pumped into it. Overall the hopiness is great for the style, and the aftertaste is as clean as can be expected.

When comparing this lager to other lagers of its style, Steinlager really stands out as one of the better ones. I`ll likely pick this up again.

Appearance: Brilliant clarity. Pale gold in color. Head is white and medium-sized. A bit airy and foamy. Right for style.

Smell: Faint pale malt and peaches. Crisp and clean.

Taste: About as smooth and clean as it gets, if your green bottle has survived the trip fr New Zealand. Pale malt and very slight bitterness are all that's present. No weird aftertaste is a big plus for a larger label lager!

Mouthfeel: Medium body and high carbonation with just a bit of a bite. Just right for a lager--neither full, nor watery.

Overall: Hardly exciting, but not at all distasteful. This is the beer we should have been drinking in college. Doesn't require a lot of thought, goes Dow fast and easy, but doesn't require a chaser.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass.
Aroma- ahh, the green glass skunkiness
Appearance- Straw yellow with a large white head.
Taste- Skunky and rather dull, not good
palate- A light bodied brew with medium carbonation.
Overall-Avoid this beer, it is dull, skunky and very forgettable,

Overall: Hardly exciting, but not at all distasteful. This is the beer we should have been drinking in college. Doesn't require a lot of thought, goes Dow fast and easy

I had this beer while in the airport between flights in NZ during my wife's and my 2 week trip in NZ. This one just sounded good at the time since I wanted something light to drink,

This beer pours a pale straw color that is clear and shows off some seriously high carbonation. The bright, white colored head is a thin frothy layer that dissipates quickly to a thin lacing that is retained throughout the drinking experience. 3/5 The aroma is typical of the American Adjunct lagers with a very light grainy malt and rice both coming through, and then being backed up by a grassy hop note. The aroma is incredibly simple and straightforward with a heavier emphasis being placed on the hops, although this is relative. 3/5 The flavor leans toward hoppy with the malt acting as a balancer here. The malt is grainy and slightly sweet with a hint of rice. The hops come across as fresh cut grass and hay, with just a hint of peppery spiciness. The flavor, from the malt to the hops, is not incredibly strong, but is a tad better than original Steinlager. 3/5 The mouthfeel is watery, which results in an incredibly light beer that is thirst quenching and not drying in the slightest, with no lingering mouthfeel. There is a decent carbonation burn up front, but this goes away fairly quickly. 3/5 This beer really comes across as New Zealand's version of Budweiser to me. It is very light, but well balanced, despite the lean towards hoppy. It is nice and thirst quenching and is very easy drinking. 3/5
