330ml bottle with 5.2% ABV listed. Just purchased but 14 months old.

Looks and smells like a typical schwarzbier, albeit with a weaker head and smelling slightly stronger and sweeter. Flavor of a typical schwarzbier too, if also slightly sweeter.

Medium-light body with near medium carbonation.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

From "Thunder Mountain" comes this beer, apparently. Anyway, it pours a clear garnet-brown topped by a finger of glowing off-cream-white foam. The nose comprises buttery biscuit, very light roasted malts, and a hint of cracked wheat. The taste holds notes of cola, light maple syrup, lightly-toasted biscuit, and a thought of maduro-style tobacco. It's mostly cola on my tongue, frankly. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, a kinda weak schwarz, one that seems too watered-down quality-wise for its own good, like it was trying for more of a mass appeal or something. Or it's just not that great...

A - A quad-like brown body with dark caramel hues. Thin carbonation ontop.

S - Lots of lager yeast in the nose and a bold honey sweetness. TOasted malts and a touch of minerals and metals.

T - Sweet toasty malts up front. Sweet honey with a balance against mineral water notes and metallic twang. Dark soft bread.

M - Lighter body with a fizzy carbonation. Sweet and quenching.

O - No complaints here, a decent schwarz.

500 ml green bottle, with soda like twist off cap. Pours medium dark amber, with some light shining through, typical tan head, that shows better then moderate retentive powers and leaves some stringy lacing behind. Minor nose of just some toasty, bready malts. Mild dark malts, some more bready notes, and a clean and smooth midsection. Finish reveals faint to minor hopping and the expected clean, lingering malty finish. Not a bad lager, nothing real exciting, but probably would go fine with some BBQ and/or sausage.

Nice bite of espresso bitterness with hints of dark chocolate and some dried fruit. Pours black with an airy, foamy beige head Palate is slightly watery, but overall this beer hits the mark for a schwarzbier. Not a big fan of their pils, but this one is nice.

Aroma is rather typical of a lager, not too strong and not exactly promising, but it does have a fruity undertone. It pours a dark chocolaty brown with a thick, if not persistent, tan head. Flavor started out a little weak, but as I drank more it became a little more mouth-filling. It is malty with a spicy undertone and hints of smoke and chocolate. Texture is smooth and just a little tingly, a tad watery but still more than acceptable.

"black lager" it states on the label, BBD 4/24/08, hoping for the best ; pours a clear amber brown, not really black with a thin off-white head which quickly fizzles into a modest field of pinhole bubbles leaving a moderate lacing in my nonic ; a subtle smell, mostly steely grain and darker malts, a faint darker fruit and roasted nut undertone as well ; a rather thin flavor, some steely cereal grains again w/ a fainter darker malt/nut flavor, not much of the typical "roast coffee" note present in most schwarz crisp finish with hints of dates alcohol ; dry, very light mouthfeel w/ a lot of co2 ; def. a quaffable brew, tho not special in the least...

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Dimpled Mug.

Appearance: Dark reddish-brown with moderate off-white head, settling to a thin line.

Smell: Cocoa, caramel, cherry, straw and some spiciness.

Taste: Just barely sweet caramel, cocoa and molasses initially. Finish is more cherry-like with just a hint of metallic, spicy hops.

Feel: Moderate carbonation, medium-light body, semi-dry finish.

Overall: Decent Schwarzbier that could use a little more hops and/or depth. Pretty easy to drink overall.

11.2oz green bottle. Entitled "Black Lager" for the US market.

It pours a cola brown with a fizzy off-white head, nothing new here, but it is the standard for the style, it has a bit of nice lacing.

No skunk here, it is a mild smelling brew, very reminiscent of a pilsener in the smell. It has a slight hint of roastiness along with some earthier noble hops.

The flavor is nice and bready with just a hint of roastiness, reminds me of a Munich Helles with a bit of chocolate malt included. It finishes with a nice bitterness. Just a smooth easy as hell to drink beer, a great one to session.

Poured from a 11.2oz bottle into a pilsner glass.

This brew is a dark brown with some ruby highlights. The head is moderately sized and retains decently. This smells basically like a pilsner with just a bit of added roastiness from the malts. The taste basically follows this, it's honestly just a moderately roasty pilsner top to bottom.

The mouthfeel and drinkability are both pretty good, it's highly carbonated and prickly, and easy to drink. A pretty solid dark lager, there's nothing remarkable about it, but there's really nothing wrong with it either. Perhaps a little bit too close to pilsner territory for my comfort.

Donners Berger gives off very malty aromas, mostly characteristic of chocolate and light toffee fragrances.

This produces massive amounts of light tan head, The head forms together quite well, and lasts for several minutes. The body is of course black, but has reddish hues when held up to light.

This brew is well balanced between sweet caramel like flavors, with a follow up hint of smoke.

This is medium to light in body and makes for a good session beer.

Dark brownish-red pour with a one finger head that fades pretty quickly with decent lacing. Earthy, malty nose with hints of caramel and a touch of dark fruit. Roasty malt and caramel are the stars in the taste. Hints of nuts, with a touch of smoke and chocolate. The malty sweetness dominates with very little bitterness to balance. Slightly syrupy mouthfeel. The sweetness really hurts the drinkability for me. Living in Germany I've been lucky enough to sample quite a few Schwarzbiers. This is not a great interpretation of the style. It's not a bad beer, but nothing special either.
