Offers a darker, chestnut brown color, big fluffy brownish head. Aroma of burned malts, plums, raisins and hints of chocolate. Has tastes of breadish malts, sugar and toffee. The high carbonation is hiding the upcoming alcohol with a refreshing finish. A slightly bitter maltiness lingers on the tongue very long. Has a pleasant mouthfeel throughout, intensifying the impression of being a very well balanced stong beer in which the alcohol is well hidden. Starts rather sweet, while turning more bitter to the end, due to some hops, which are still dominated by the malty, sugary body of this beer.

Funky head explosion out of my 750 mL bottle. After, pouring in a Belgian taster glass - clinging head.

Typical fruity, fermented taste (yeast flavored) with similar smells. Maybe hints of figs.

The body is light but can be also tasted a "light creamy" complexion with the interplay of the head.

Color is murky - almost monsterous reminiscent of swimming in a lake and kicking silt on the bottom.

Overall...great. The Belgium monks brew a good brew and I can see why this is a high scoring beer. Judge this beer against Unibroue Trois Pistoles.

Thanks.

750ml bottle poured into a chalice.

A: Nut brown color with red-orange hues. Some haze. Khaki-colored head retains at two inches for the duration. Thick, chunky lacing coats the glass.

S: Coffee cake, cinnamon, caramel, glazed nuts, hint of cocoa. Black pepper. Musty yeast. Hint of herbal hops. Candi sugar. Pear and nectarine esters. Whiff of alcohol.

T: Nutty, cocoa, burnt sugar, cola, some coffee roast. Malty and layered. Very herbal mid-palate. Tea and tobacco. Musty yeast is an anchor. Phenols get peppery and a little smokey. Fleeting dark fruit candi sugar flavors. Hints of tangerine and tropical esters. Spike of rummy alcohol toward the back. Trailing nutty and cola tastes on a long finish.

M: Medium thick body with rich malty textures. Coating and almost syrupy, though the attenuation prevents it from being sticky. Light creaminess. Prickly and bitey carbonation lifts it. Firm but gentle alcohol warmth.

O: It's perhaps a little more malt-driven than most of the other Trappists and seems just a little less complex though it hits all the marks. There's an overall dessert type of feel to it with all the layered malt flavors and richer textures, but the high attenuation prevents it from getting too big and sticky. Though it isn't quite as awe-inspiring as its other Trappist brethren, it still upholds the lofty standards of the Trappist emblem.

Bottle from Mi Grain, Mi Houblon in Arlon. Superlative. Excellent on all counts, prunes, toffee, some malt, some vanilla. A bare hint of the alcohol, not in flavor, but in warmth. A real gem

Great appearance with a huge foamy, tan, long lasting head, plenty of lace, and a slightly hazy, brown amber color. Aroma is figs, dates, raisins, malt, toffee, caramel. Flavor is sweet up front then the aroma characteristics, then a few odd tastes. Body is good. Finish has those odd tastes along with some residual sweetness giving it a medicinal cast. But overall, very good.
