Bottle was a few years old and gushed a little.
Pours dark brown with a pillowy, light beige head.
Aromas of grapes, dates, blackberries and strawberries; so fruity the Belgian yeast is all but lost.
Flavor is mostly Welch's grape juice with a welcomed spicy kick.
Moderate with dry and spicy finish.
With all the big name Trappist beers, this holds its own and then some.

Drank from Teku from 750ml bottle. Dating on bottle says best before Dec. 2017.

Reminds me immediately of Rochefort 10. Rochefort 10 is one of my favorite beers, though I haven't had it in awhile. Rochefort 10 probably edges this out because of the more pronounced fruity flavors in Rochefort 10 (which are still not dominant), but i put this among the better Trappist quads. Very drinkable, and very desirable. Has a very faint soapy flavor that can be a flaw of beers of this type as well, though it is barely detectable.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter.
A: Pours a nice dark honey brown with dark ruby and yellow hues at the edges with backlighting. Rocky 2-3 inch light tan head with excellent retention.
S: Fresh Belgian yeast, soft caramel malt, a mix of spice (all spice, clove, cinnamon, and a hint of white pepper), cherry, red berries, and a hint of leather. Smells very fresh, fruity, and zesty. Excellent complexity here.
T: That fresh Belgian yeast hits first, very quickly followed by juicy raisins, cinnamon, clove, dates, leather, white pepper, strawberries, cherries, and a soft, but persistent, backbone of caramel malt. With warming, notes of pear and honey emerge. Follows aroma, not precisely, but very close. Wonderfully complex.
M: Soft and fruity sweet. Almost pulpy in feel. Medium body. Lingers and matures beautifully on the palate.
D: Drinks lighter, more fruit-forward, and fresher than I expected. A wonderful example of style! Seek it out!
