Pours a cloudy caramel, ridiculously foamy and lasting head.

Smells of honey, bread, and fruits, particularly apple.

Complex blend of bread, spices, apple, yeast, caramel, pepper, light fruits, hop bitterness, honey sweetness, and slight earthiness. I don't know how those monks do this, but they do it well. Alcohol undetectable.

Mouthfeel medium-light.

This disappeared quickly. I will definitely pick this up if I can find it again. Complex and flavorful.

Okay beer, a bit more on the malty side rather than yeasty (bread). Small sting of alcohol in it. Not thick and syrupy. Not my favourite trappist.

Poured in a 30cl chalice.

A: Cloudy dark-brown with one-finger head. Medium carbonation.

S: Yeasty, dark malts, alcoholic, slight notes of citrus and spices.

T: Bready and malty, dark malts. Sweet in the beginning, transitioning to yeasty and a faint hop taste. Also, some dark fruits in the mix. A complex ensemble of flavors going on. Temperature is a huge factor!

M: Very smooth, medium-body.

O: I really like the complex flavor profile! Definitely one of my favorite dubbels. If I had to critique something, is that it doesn't have that "Je ne sais quoi." that would make it a superb beer!

At 8% ABV, this is a Belgian Dark Strong, not a Dubbel.

Belgian Dark Strong Ales are dark, very rich, and complex. Most versions are unique in character reflecting characteristics of individual breweries. Authentic Trappist versions tend to be drier than Abbey versions, which can be rather sweet and full-bodied.

Although Achel is authentic Trappist, it drinks more like an Abby. It has a rich chocolate/munich malt character and aromas with a lingering sweetness. Very smooth tasting with a medium-heavy mouthfeel throughout.

I bought an 11.2oz bottle at Red Spirits & Wine AND BEER! on January 19, 2015. The date on the bottle was July 16, 2014, making it 6 months old.

I can't fault this beer to style. I tend to like my Belgian Strongs a bit drier, but this was very easy to drink and enjoyable. Worth a try!

i like this even better than their tripel, and even though i paid 17 bucks for a single smell bottle at highland tap and burger, i dont regret it. ive been meaning to try this one for awhile, as it represents one of the last trappist offerings i have yet to get into. im so glad i did, its amazing, as good as any of the others. raisin brownish red with over two inches of tan head, airy and foamy, rising above the rim of the glass even, and lasting the entire drink. it smells amazing, an old world yeast strain, something very special there, and a nice long boilded caramelized malt profile, but stopping well short of that chocolate malt depth you would find in a brown ale. this is more of a dubbel, with fruit like fig and raisin to it, and a moderate sweetness all the way through. a little molasses, vanilla, alcohol warmth. some nice white pepper and clove spice from the yeast, but its all just so well integrated, very impressive. smooth in the feel, effervescent on the carbonation, and creamy, sort of rich and regal feeling, infinitely satisfying and dangerously drinkable for its strength (and price). an extraordinarily complex and impressive beer, as good as any of the trappist stuff. one of the great beers of the old world, not to be missed.

Aroma- Moderate Banana, light tart cherry, and hints of raisin, no hops and a very sneaky perfumey alcohol.

Taste- Peppery character is prominent, with notes of whorehound and dried cherry and raisin the finish. A more aggressive phenol/ alcohol profile than some other dubbels. Banana barely comes through in the flavor. All this of course darts in and out of a big caramelly malt center. A long, complex, dry, bready/ toasty finish.

Overall- Very intersesting and multi-dimensional palate experience that is well inside the conventional dubbel realm but offers an nusual combo of flavors. Least fruity example of the style that I have had, and dried fruit characters are very subdued. Characterisitically dry like Achel's other beers.

App- Hazy muddy brown character with low off-white head. Not that appealing really.

Mouthfeel- medium-bodied, lively, slight alcohol numbing

Pours from the bottle a deep dark murky brown with some visible floaties and a nice half inch of bubbly bone white foam on top. Crimson tinged with nice lacing. Aromas of dark burnt brown sugar, caramel, with a fruity spicy yeastiness. A touch of anise as well. Pretty nice, though a bit subdued.

First sip brings a deep brown sugar, caramel maltiness that has a nice nutty aspect to it. Notes of dark fruits, anise and a faint touch of bubblegum follow. Spicy yeast tones weave there way in and out of each subsequent sip. Slightly vinous....this one finishes rather sweet with a lingering roasty, malty flavor. Quite nice.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a brash carbonation that stays strong throughout the brew. Goes down smooth and is really quite refreshing even at 8%. I wouldn't mind having a few bottles of this lying around. I'll have to try some of the other Achel line.

11.2 ouncer, pours clear Dubbel brown, head is initially huge, then slowly receeding, loose and frothy, leaving a thick collar and thick film and some spots of thick stick and areas of sheeting. Bread, brown sugar and ripe fruit nose. Sweet malts, more fruit, and notes of vanilla, alcohol, and rum. Yummy stuff. Warming, complex and flavorful. A nice treat (Expensive @ $5.99 for the teeny bottle)

Poured a very dark Amber color with a tan head that spreads to the edge of the glass quickly. Smell is toffee, raisins, and yeast. The flavor is sweet bread and dark fruits. You also get a bubble gum flavor from the yeast. The feel is medium with good carbonation. This is a great Belgian dubbel. It has an almost perfect combination of flavors.

I bought this as a single at Union Jack's on the Manatawny. I drank it in a goblet. L,a, and '04 are notched in the label.

Pours (after pouring in the yeast) a dense dark red with a nice two finger head of beige colored foam. Big hunks of yeast are floating in the beer, and chunks of yeast are clinging to the sides of my glass.

Aroma is, huge caramel, rum soaked raisins, plums, yeast, and maybe a little chocolate. A funny, metallic-y chalky smell developes in a while, and remains for the rest of the drink.

Flavor is dark sweet caramel malts, rum soaked fruits like above, yeast out the wazoo, and alcohol warmth. Some decent spicy phenolics going on as well. A sort of metallic aftertaste developes after a while. Hop bitterness is detectable, but hop flavor and aroma are not.

Mouthfeel is full bodied, with a medium to high level of carbonation. Finish is long, sweet, and smooth.

This is a very good Abbey dubbel. Dark, caramel-y, some phenolics, and a good alcohol punch. Not great, but good.

Poured into a snifter,a dirty red,dark amber like color.No real head just a constiant white foam ring,with extra tiny bubbles stringing to the top of the glass.
A clean fruity aroma,with hints of apples,raisins,figs,a bit woody.Very complex aromas and inviting as well.
Tastes of green apples,fruity,caramelly,grassy a bit woody.
A very dry,but crisp finish that very complex.
The mouthfeel was silky,slightly cloying,but crisp and light with a mouthwatering dryness.
A sipping wine like drinkability,but I could sip on this for a good while.

A-Ruddy brown with brilliant red hues. A filmy off-white tan head with lots of lively CO2 bubbles. Heavy lacing.
S-Toasted barley malt with hints of vapory alcohol, not much else.
T-Rich toasted malt flavor with a fair amount of estery yeast.
M-Very nice heavy body with a warming finish. Creamy. High carbonation.
O-A solid Trappist ale, comparable to Westmalle, superior in the mouthfeel but lacks the complexity in the nose and taste.

Nose: wine and plum, some sweet malt.
Pours hazy chestnut under a rocky slowly dissipating 3” tan tinted white foam collar. Classic Belgian Window lace.
Palate: plum, fruit cake, caramel, toffee, rich with long lingering toffee flavors well into the finish. Some plum flavors in the finish. The hops are not huge but they are there providing balance. Moderately sweet.
Medium full body with above average carbonation, warming.

Appearance: Good thick head. Brown/red hue when held up to light

Smell: subtle mix of spices and wheat

Taste: Caramel, restrainted biterness. Pleasant. Not particularly complex

Mouthfeel: Fairly low carbonation, fine for this beer. Subtle aftertaste, sweet and bitter

Drinkability: Nice enough but no wow factor. Would choose a different trappist ale over this one, but if it was the only one available I might try it. The bottle label is very poor though, so I would probably pass over it.

Appearance: Medium caramel colored body with huge head.

Smell: Roasted malts with hints of prunes and dates. Minor alcohol notes present.

Taste: Roasted malts comes through initially but the dates and prunes soon present themselves.

Mouthfeel: Very pleasant carbonation present throughout this creamy beverage. Lingering hops stay present after each sip.

Drinkability: This beer goes down smooth. I could easily enjoy a couple of these in a row.

Pours a hazy chestnut brown color with a one-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of light molasses with good amounts of dark fruits - mostly raisins but with hints of dried dates. Also present are hints of indistinct spices that gain steam as the beer warms.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Deep caramel malt flavors augmented by thin molasses. Midway through the sip the flavor profile turns toward fruit - raisins and dates as with the aroma. The fruit flavors carry through to a mildly sweet ending.

Mouthfeel is OK. It's a bit on the thin side, especially given the flavor profile it's supporting, with soft carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall I didn't think this aged all that well. I'll have to have it fresh to be sure but it seemed to be only a milder version of what it once was.
