Why bowling references? Pours a close to black but closer to a darker shade of brown. Good clarity but limited head that quickly dissipated. Not much lacing to speak of.
The nose is limited with some lighter malt notes. Mostly a light toasted and a bit of chocolate. Some bread like notes as well. No hop presence. Some light DMS and a touch of yeasty esters as well, rose-like aromas.
The taste is also limited but some good characteristics. Some roast and chocolate malt flavors come out but are subtle. Some lactic almost mocha flavors. Some nutty flavors as wells as a light butter finish. Some generic hop flavors but very subtle. Some off flavors leaves a oily finish with a almost oxidized finish.
The texture is light with almost watery feel. Somewhat oily but really lacks depth. Very limited overall.

Dark brown, thin, 2/5" tan head. Aroma was mostly roasted malt. Had some toffee.
Some hops to give it a bitterness, still chewy, but not thick. Mild chocolate malt. Good porter that is well balanced.

Appetizer: almost no carbonation with a black-red brown appearance; mildly sweet aroma
Entree: smooth initial taste (similar to Founder's Porter I sampled just prior so maybe biased), with less mildly harsh aftertaste, which dissipates nicely / better as compared
Dessert: better than Founder's, still behind Deschutes, and comparable (albeit differing since vanilla) to Linenkugel's Snowdrift.
Each his/her own, so your call.
