Served in a Budweiser pokal.

Pours just how you'd expect an AAL to pour: very pale straw with a thick, though quickly dissipating, white frothy head. Some thick webby lacing is produced. The nose is that usual funky corn, rice, and vegetable oil. The taste generally follows, with heavy-handed influences of corn syrup and rice, culminating in an off-putting funky flavor in the back of the throat. The body is quite light, with more-than-healthy carbonation and a very dry finish. Overall, a highly forgettable brew that leaves a poor impression of the large archipelago. Come on, Indonesia!

330 ml can, as Bali Hai Bir Lager / International Premium Lager Beer, a gift from my Indonesian-born sister-in-law. ABV is 5.0%. Pale yellow colour, big to moderate head. Strong "industrial" sweetish pale lager aroma, maize or other adjuncts galore. The flavour is also sweet with plenty of adjunct cereals, minimal hops, just a weak metallic bitterness in the finish. Not good.

A: Pours a dark golden color with a frothy white head that quickly fizzes out.

S: Honey dominates the aroma with floral notes toward the end, not bad.

T: The taste is terrible. Bland unsalted cracker flavor hits you right away with just a tiny bit of hop bitterness at the end.

D: This is not a good brew. The aroma got me hopeful but the flavor was just awful. Steer clear.

This beer came out with a wild and fluffy head and a thin, yellow color. Good lacing and long-lasting head. The smell was big and worty, later subduing to medium hops and malts. The taste was a very balanced one of malts and hops, with a somewhat floury sensation. Not sweet at all--except for a slightly sweet aftertaste, remarkably clean--very drinkable. The mouthfeel was the highlight for me, with light bubbles in the mouth and a crisp, sharp finish in the throat.

This beer exceeded the low expectations I had for it, and I would reach for it again.

This one poured a fairly clear pale yellow with just a faint haze. Fizzy white foam disappeared almost immediately, leaving behind a very thin ring that was supported by a constant stream of bubbles rising to the surface. The aroma was quite mild, with some crackery malt and floral/spicy hops. Bitterness was very low, with cereal and crackery malts, faint hop flavour and a hint of yeast. Very fizzy carbonation, very light bodied and dry. There wasn't a lot of character to this beer, but it was refreshing in the heat and was totally inoffensive.

Had a bottle of this at an (amazing) Indonesian restaurant in Wanchai, HK. Appearance is yellow and fizzy, as you'd expect in the style. Smell is better than expected, a glance at the label reveals that this is an all-malt beer, no adjuncts. Taste is boring, but not offensive. Mouthfeel light and fizzy. Not bad, especially with spicy food.

Baki Hai smells sweet with some noble hoppy smell. Pours to a bright yellow with thin microbubble head. Taste is very adjunct, bitterness off the bat with a sweet maltiness following and a finish that is flat bitterness with a sweet & sour aftertaste. Mouthfeel is thin, carbonation is good, but not much body. A good Bali hot weather brew but nothing to write home about.

Pours straw yellow with a massive amount of carbonation. The fast carbonation immediately kills any hopes for a head. No head. No lacing.

The smell is of strong "Euro-skunk" - sulfur and spent matches.

The taste is chemical-ish. Very sulfur-ish. A bad Heineken clone, it seems. Vague sweetness is lost in the fizz and covered by the sulfur with a touch of dryness reminiscent of spent matches in the finish.

Very fizzy and harsh. Thin/light-bodied.

This is one of the worst beers I've had. I let it sit to settle the carbonation about half-way through... I was able to down the second half, but really I don't know why I didn't just drainpour it.

Green 33cl bottle, best before 5 Aug 2010, poured into a Hoegaarden Grand Cru glass on 3 July 2010.

Looks and smells like any other lager/pilsner, golden, bright and clean, very little aroma.

The taste was fairly sweet compared to most beers from this and simular styles.

Thin and bordering on tasteless, not one of my favourite beers, but it takes me to 67 countries on my mission to drink around the world.

I got this in a "Beers of the World" gift set from my brother. I looked at the back and it said best by November 2008 (I drank this January 09) thanks a lot Worldmarket! Anyway, it poured a pale yellow run-of-the-mill lager color. Smelled faintly of cooked corn and cereal grain. Taste was bland and one dimensional with a stingyness on the tongue that was unpleasant. I give it a thumbs down.

This one is slightly skunky and fusel, with cheap malts and strange hops. The appearance is pale gold with small particles and an even smaller head. The flavor is like the aroma. The palate is thin and the finish sour and ricy. This is a drain pour. Pass.

Poured from 330mL green bottle into a Pilsner glass.

Appearance: crystal-clear body with a rich golden hue and tons of effervescence; head is one finger of frothy white foam.

Smell: cooked corn and spoiled wet grain. A skunk smell from green bottle packaging is still lingering as well; one of the most awful smelling beers I've ever had the displeasure to encounter.

Taste: after smelling this beer, I did not want to taste it. The flavor isn't quite as bad as the aroma, but it's still pretty damn bad. Sour grain mixed with ... nothing else. Ugh. It's not utterly, completely, entirely repulsive, but it is close.

Mouthfeel: light body with a somewhat watery, insipid mouthfeel; still, the carbonation is pretty good and it is mostly appropriate to style.

Drinkability: this beer is pretty bad. I'm going to be dumping the rest out. Uff da.

Poured from a green 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a pale yellow color with a 1/2 inch head. I don't know if it is the green bottle or what, but this beer smells skunky! Taste is crisp, malts, a bit light. Feels light in the mouth and goes down very easily. I can see where this could be popular in the tropics. Overall this makes for a mediocre brew.

330ml can from a Bali supermarket for 15200 IRP.

4.71% ABV.

Insipid, but not watery. Just a simple shallow taste if barley water.

D+ (2.32) / AVOID

I brought a 330ml can of Bali Hai home from a trip to Indonesia. The beer pured a clear golden color with thin white head (foamed up initially) and is leaving no lace. The smell was grainy and slightly skunky. The taste was more typical of a Euro type pilsner with more a Saaz presence. The mouthfeel was light body and good carbonation. Overall it is one of those beers that you dont get overly excited about....but think....hey beer is beer.

Bottle: standard 330mL green bottle with a dodgy SEA label.

Appearance: standard SEA lager yellow with exploding carbonation. A bubbling head that dissipates rather quickly.

Aroma: again standard lager aromas of grain and rice. Not much else, not even hops.

Taste: clean and crisp with reasonable grain and rice SEA combination, with just a touch of grassy hops. Nice and refreshing.

Aftertaste: not much aftertaste - just a touch of grain.

Mouth feel: light in body with a high carbonation to carry the flavour across and make the beer very refreshing. Suits the SEA and Australian climate.

Overall: a cheap South-East Asian beer that costs not very much. You get what you pay for, I suppose. Not a brilliant beer, but decent if the weather gets over 40-degrees.
