A- I've got to say the waitress at Klosterbraeu poured one of the sweetest-looking beers I've ever seen. The beer itself was a bright golden color, but the best part was the mountainous head that literally towered over the mug a good inch or two. Awesome.
S- Maybe it's just all the Rauchbeer I've been drinking in Bamberg, but I swear I detected some smoky notes along with the sweet malt aroma that predominated.
T- Sweet all the way: flavors of honey, cotton candy and molasses. I don't know what treacle actually tastes like, but if I did I bet that flavor was in there too. There was a slight citrus tartness before the hop bitterness kicked in with the flavor of grapefruit rind and a moderate alcohol burn in the finish.
D- Like most German Bocks, this pushes the limit of drinkability. That being said, it was no problem finishing the 0.5L mug.

Overall: A good Hellerbock, but a bit sweet for my taste. While darker Bockbiers have roasted notes to cut the sweetness, I feel a lighter Bock like this needs more hop bitterness to balance it. I hate saying anything negative about a brewery with the tradition of Klosterbraeu, but that's just my opinion...

On tap in tall curved 50cl glass. This was advertised as just "bockbier" by the publican on a visit in March 09. What I had was definitely darker than pils, but I don't think it was the Schwarzla bock.

Amber color, mostly clear, persistent head. Light aroma, some earthyness and smokiness. Rich malty taste, bread, toasted grains, and a light touch of smokiness in the finish. Hops also fairly strong. Complex and pleasant, one of the best tasting German beers I have had. Medium mouthfeel. Quite drinkable, especially for a bock. If Bamberg didn't have so many incredible beers to try, I would have come back for more.

From the slightly out of date bottle, it pours a golden amber with a sweet head. Tiny bubbles cascade up the sides to sustain the generous head. A classic German spring bock in both appearance and taste. Beware!

When this beer showed up I at first assumed that the waitress misunderstood my garbled German order for a bock. It is has a little bit more gold color to it than a standard pils, and was crystal clear. The taste soon disabused me of any weak notions of pilsner beer. Very nicely malty like a bock should be, plus it had a nice sharp clean hop bitterness to it. A good beer and a great way to end an evening.

Sampled on tap at the brewery.

This bockbier poured a clear amber color with creamy white foam that settled but coated the glass and left some lace. The smell was malty with a light hoppiness. The taste was malty and slightly sweet with a bit of Munich malt, moderate hops, and with a touch of alcohol. There was a mild hoppiness in the finish. The mouthfeel was smooth with good carbonation feel. The body was medium. The beer was slightly warming. The aftertaste was pleasantly malty. Nice bock with a good kick.

This Bock is quite light for the style, almost a Pils-like hue. It is light golden and clear throughout. Very little in the way of bubbles rising through the Bier. Head is thin, fine and white. It doesn't last too long and leaves a minimum of lacing. Nose, though not too strong, exhibits plenty of bready malt aromas. Body is better than medium, and the mimimal carbonation makes for a smooth feel on the tongue. Flavor also has plenty of bready, lightly toasty malt. A subtle hint of tropical fruit seems to be lurking deep within the malt. Hoppiness is present in a mild floral finish, with lots of malt still sticking in the throat. This is a decent offering, and yet another good Bier from Klosterbräu. Thnx go to UncleJimbo for smuggling this back for me from Bamberg. Zum Wohl!!
