Ein Bier mit schöner dunkelbrauner Farbe. Leichtmalzaromatisch und milder, weicher, süffiger Geschmack. Sehr gute Schaum- bildung.

500ml swing-top BBE March 12 09 (seven months ago). Opens with a bang and pours dark brown/black with a large light beige head. Nice lacing. Smells of sweet roasty malt with some caramel. Light diacetyl and a bit of oxidation. These two come out even more in the flavor, but the nice roasty character that's supposed to be there is not lost. Sweet over all, with some chocolate notes. Very full, creamy body that's quite impressive for the ABV. This would be a very nice beer fresh, I'm sure, so I tried not to let the off-flavors affect the rating.

Wow. Just wow. This style has been one of my favorites lately, but this is a different level. What a beer. Massive roasted malt flavor. Easy drinking. Too delicious in the flavor and feel. Body is on point. World class.
Bought a swing-top bottle to-go from the brewery, dated 29.12.23. As good as I remember on draft in Bamberg. Aroma and flavor packed with chocolate and sweet char and earth and roasty goodness. Goes down so smoothly and easily. Up there with the best.

Brauerei-Gaststätte Klosterbräu "Bamberger Schwärzla"
on tap at the brewery on 14 September 2017
Notes: Black colored body beneath a full head fo tan foam. Very good head retention and lacing. Aroma of dark caramel, roasted malts, distant dark chocolate, and a hint of coffee. The flavor delivers dark caramel, chocolate, nuttiness, roastiness, a hint of apple, and a touch of herbal hop character. A firm bitterness balances it and it finishes roasty with a light herbal note lingering. Medium bodied, gently crisp, and then smooth across the palate.

Purchased at Bierteck in Bamberg, DE. Exact price unknown but only a couple of Euros.
0.5 Liter flip-top bottle stored at 42 degrees and served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Dated 11.01.18.
Aroma – very distinct toasted malt. Lasts the entire beer.
Head – large (Maximum 5.3 cm, aggressive pour), light tan, low density, short retention time, diminishing to an irregular three to six mm ring and a rocky partial layer.
Lacing – poor. Just a few tiny islands.
Body – dark brown, clear.
Flavor – very toasted malt forward, just a touch of bitterness. No discreet hops flavor or aroma. No alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate – medium, approaching creamy, soft carbonation.
An excellent beer! This is one of my suitcase beers which traveled from Bamberg to Nurnberg to Frankfurt to Toronto to home. Somehow I didn’t make it to Klosterbrau on my recent trip to Bamberg which was definitely my loss. Next trip I’ll split between Klosterbrau and Schlenkerla.
Appearance 4.5, Aroma 4.5, Flavor 5, Palate 4.5, Overall 4.5.

Purchased at the brewery. This beer pours a dark brown with a nice, short lived head. A bit of toasted malt to the nose and mouth. Enjoyable. Decent flavor.
2018 Update: The head on this just out of date (and therefore on clearance) bottle, lasts a good long time. Yum!

My bottle says 5.2% alc, but i'm sure it's the same beer.
Very dark ruby, one lasting finger tan head.
Smell of nuts, low metal and dry dark fruit, roasted malts.
Rich roasted malt taste with a nice dark fruit undertone (prunes, raisin, dates), some sweet burnt sugar and a tiny hint of smoke. Roasted nuts. Faint crisp citrus and dark spices. Rather hoppy finish for its style, dry leaves and roast blending into a nice bitterness (a tiny bit of metal, but not as disturbing as the smell forewarned).
Medium carbonation and almost light body, easy to gulp.
A good schwarzbier with a nice twist from the subtle smokiness, enough to separate it from the bunch.
