It's been a while since I've been here but I remember it being a pretty normal sports bar with TV's and such all around. The beer selection is ok, but nothing mind blowing. The service was good and so was the food.

Volpe's is a working class bar in a non-working class area of Allentown. The beer offerings are generally pedestrian and you really feel like an outsider if you're not a regular. If you want to smoke, this is one of the few bars in Allentown that has an exception to the PA smoking ban. If you don't like smoking, then it is another reason not to go there. There are a number of better alternatives within walking distance. I'd rather go to Greg's West End Saloon, Callaghan's, Stooge's or Liberty Street.

A west allentown staple, volpe's is the model sports/cigar bar. No frills, no gimmicks, no bullshit - this is for the middle class men of the area to come and watch their basketball games, drink their beer, smoke their cigars and Volpe makes sure to keep the riff-raff far far away. They have an excellent pool table and dart set-up with PLENTY of room. A great juke box that seems to me to be a bit expensive and unwilling to deviate from the radio-friendly crap of the local pop-highschool scene, but whatever - if thats the worst thing in the place, they have little worry about. Always a pretty girl behind the counter, even if they can be a bit lazy at times and a selection to beat the band. Great for six-packing or sitting down to a session with a new IPA or Stout. The food end of things has gone south since the no-smoking law took effect in PA (Mr. Volpe opted to keep the facility smoking and do away with the food selection rather than base the revenue on eating). Its pretty much relegated to bar food and potato chips, but what the place lacks in culinary selection it more than makes up for in ambiance and atmosphere.

I used to live within walking distance and spent many nights here not only due to its proximity, but for selection and service. The first review hits the nail on the head; local anchor watering hole for decades with surprising selection. I have never seen River Horse on tap anywhere else (not that I love River Horse, but Volpe's always has a regional micro on tap, very respectable.) Also, one of the only places I have seen Yuengling Porter on tap (very impressive!) One random Tuesday night in February I was here and they were watching HS wrestling matches from the 80s, but there's lots of TVs and pinball, plus pool and some other games. Its very very very smoky, and unless you are a regular, forget about watching the Iggles here. Also, I would eat before I went. Great carryout (6-pack) selection at good prices. This is the kind of place I really dig.

Many may ask as to why this place was submitted. Allow me a few minutes of your time, and I will shed some light on this...

Volpe's is locally-owned, and is as close to a local hang out as you may ever find. The family that owns it is known around the area, and it is one of the more laid-back places you may ever visit. I will not bend the truth on this one. The decor is nothing to look at. It is formica and all things that a bar is generally not. There is a fantastic dart board, pool table and a great jukebox. Of course, there are some TV's there, to catch all of the action, whatever that may be.

The food at Volpe's is basic bar food, to be sure. Although, you can go out on a limb and get some Tiger cheese, hot bologna, pickled eggs or even some pickled tripe, should you so desire.

The edge that Volpe's offers is their desire to strongly promote local microbrews. In fact, that is a great deal of what they carry, including Yards and Stoudt's, just to name a couple. They also keep Anchor Steam on hand, in rotating varieties. Also, Spaten, Lowenbrau and Paulaner are also prevalent. This is by far one of the better brew selections in the Valley, and they do their best to promote them with a "Micro Tap" and "Micro Bottle" of the week.

All in all, if you are passing through the area, perhaps on your way to Shangy's, you may want to drop by and check this one out. Will it change your religion? Probably not. But it is one of the more intriguing "local" places on the map.

Zum wohl!
