Dark dark brown, almost black in color with a light brown head. Head leaves small bubbles around rim of glass. Smells are boozy, roasted and bitter. Tastes is bittersuite with a nice roastiness. Booze a bit prevelant in this flavor wise, not a bother but think it would have been if masked a little more. Feel is smooth and velvety. Good but has potential to be much better. Just misses the mark somehow to be great.

Beer poured from bottle into a Snifter shaped glass

A - Beer pours with a dark colored body, motor oil in appearance; small tan head formed, less than one finger in size; not much lacing stuck around the glass; tar look

S - Really dark chocolate; moldy yeast nose; moldy cheese, like a mascarpone; ricotta; back-end has a dark burnt malt nose; sherry; no hops to this beer at all

T - Dark coffee, espresso favor; slight liquor based flavor, followed up with a yeasty chocolate taste; figs and sweet prunes

M - Medium body; not much of an aftertaste; lingering coffee aftertaste; touch of coffee flavored ice cream coffee; no carbonation what so ever

D - Alright; not sure where they were going with the yeast and moldy cheese taste; its a stout, what more could you want besides smooth burnt malt flavoring? I think the moldiness could have better served with a Gueuze or or other light roasted ale

I was really surprised by this beer and by it's low overall score when I got here. It may not be a huge Imperial Stout like a Surly or Three Floyds but it is what it is and it is good. I would say sublimely balanced with lots of flavors. Very drinkable and delicious. I'll be picking up a case of these to stash away for the rest of the winter.

Shared with colleagues, 1.20.11.

Dark brown almost black opaque body, no visible carbonation, broken brown head less than a finger resulted in uneven ring around edge of glass. Faint bit of roast in the nose, even less chocolate, citrusy hops. Taste is pretty muted for style, more mild roast than chocolate, more nibs than dark chocolate, neither is very assertive, citrus hops, not bitter. Mouthfeel is a bit light for the style, good effervescence, not sticky, ABV pretty well hidden. A good value at this price point, but quality wise there are many better available beers in this category.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a solid black with about 3/4 inch of medium brown head that had good retention and low lacing.

The aroma was full, rich, sharp roasted tones with solid grains underneath. The flavors were pretty similar, roast and grain, with just a touch of alcohol. Fairly typical for the style.

The body was a bit fuller and smoother than average. Drinkability was very good, the beer went down easily and smoothly. Overall, a nice example of the style, a bit better than average and one of this brewery's better efforts. Worth trying when you see it.

Acquired from Hale's and poured from bomber into a snifter.

Pours inky blank with very slight head. Leaves a light brown lace as foam dissipates.

What is that smell?!? It's not necessarily bad as it is unique. It smells seriously like a slight blueberry(?) yogurt or something (or is this what one would call lactose?). Drinks weird, a tad like an imperial cream stout. Got some fruit flavors mixed in with chocolate, molasses, caramel, licorice, malt. Finishes with light hops and toasted/burnt malt. Unsure if the fruit flavors are from the hop profile or use of fruit. Some slight vanilla and bitter malt become apparent as the brew goes down. Syrupy dark malt flavor lingers on the tongue between sips... and that yogurt flavor.

It's tough to think about where this beer deserves to be ranked. I don't think it's quite as bad as some others have mentioned but at the same time it's hard to put this even close to any of the upper echelon stouts. If anything, to me it seems like they tried to get just about every stout flavor and characteristic combined into one beer instead of focusing on a specific flavor profile for their beer. For $5, it isn't bad but at the same time I wish I would have been able to bring something else back from Seattle than this.

Poured from a 22oz bomber at about 50F.

A - Pours the darkest of blacks, with a nice creamy chocolate head - practically nitro-tap in texture and appearance. Just a bit of lacing.

S - Deep roasted malts, espresso and dark molasses. Some fruitiness as well.

T - Strong coffee notes backed by dark chocolate, black licorice, molasses and dark fruit. Some smoky quality as well - a touch of burnt malt perhaps... Quite decent overall, with just a bit of booziness, and a mild bitter aftertaste.

M - Fairly creamy, with a low to moderate level of carbonation. A bit syrupy on the tongue.

D - Although not the strongest by ABV, the 22oz'er was more than enough for one sitting. This really pummels the taste buds with its depth of dark roasted flavors, and although not the best RIS I have had, it was quite satisfying overall. Wouldn't mind seeing this in 12oz bottles which would be a more easily consumed size.
