This is the ubiquitous Myanmarian brew, and undoubtedly the generals still in command of this lovely little country are getting a generous kickback for allowing it to become the #1 beer in the country. I spoke to some Europeans living in Malaysia who said that several times a year they would drive up to Burma (the colonial misnomer for this country, in which the Burman tribe is the largest, but far from the only, group) to drink this beer, a pleasant change from the appalling Tiger beer foisted on Malaysians.

I spent a month in Myanmar, and drank enough of this rather poor lager that I was actively seeking out the few alternatives (Dagon, Mandalay) or the wretched ABC stout. It's OK if someone is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to drink it, or if you're travelling in Myanmar, which I thoroughly recommend that you do, but otherwise, give it a pass!

Pours a medium coppery amber with a slightly fizzy white head that dissipates slowly to a thin cap with light patchy lacing. Aroma of biscuit malt, a hint of caramel, adjunct corn, a tiny hint of grassy hops. Flavor is mellow biscuit malt with light corn adjunct sweetness, grassy hops. Flavor drops off into a light grainy malt finish with light, stale grassy hops. Light to medium bodied with a surprising light creaminess and sharp carbonation. Haven't had an adjunct lager for a while, and this one has a little more character than the domestic ones. The lightly grainy biscuit malt is more robust than expected in the aroma and to a lesser extent in the taste. It starts off fairly well, but the malt attenuates quickly and does not fully cover the more raw grainy flavors and uninteresting hops. The date on the case for this was late 2016, so this bottle is a bit old for the style and of course unknown storage conditions. I bought it anyway because the logistics of getting a fresher bottle in Myanmar are bit beyond my means. Not too bad considering the time in bottle and I suspect this could well be a step up from the typical Asian adjunct beer when it is a bit fresher. As usual with this style, quite drinkable, but unremarkable. Looks and smells much better than other adjunct lagers. A fairly painless way to tick a country from which I never expected to find a beer here in the states.

America has its Bud. Myanmar has its Myanmar. There really isn't a reason to drink this swill unless you're in Myanmar without an alternative, which will likely be the case at some point since there are many restaurants that only serve this.

Bottle at Kimono Rooftop Beer Garden, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down but never completely faded away.
S: Light to moderate aromas of adjunct malts are present in the nose. Bits of corn become noticeable as the beer warms up.
T: The taste has flavors of adjunct malts—corn seems to stand out in particular—and contributes a subtle amount of sweetness.
M: It feels a bit more than light-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. It's not watery.
O: This isn't a bad adjunct lager from Myanmar. It doesn't have any "off" flavors or skunk to it.

Straw filtered with moderate carbonation, topped with 3 fingers of white head with a corn yellow tinge.

Smells of skunk, malt, cardboard, and wet dog fur.

Malt, cream corn, clean linen, a hint of grainy molasses. Little bitterness on the end.

Light body, moderate fluffy carbonation.

Finally I got my hands on a Burmese brew! I couldn't find any on my Burma boarder runs, but now I found it online! Drank in Chiang Mai, Thailand, June 23rd, 2016.

Amber Clear pour into a pint glass with very little fizz.
Clean malt, corn and caramel nose.
Light carbonation, clean and smooth buttery finish with a hint of sweetness.
Overall, a very enjoyable lager with any asian food or on its own.

A: Pours a clear medium yellow in color with moderate amounts of active carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and some faint golden yellow highlights. The beer has a half finger tall sudsy foamy white head that reduces to a couple of small to medium sized patches of medium thick film surrounded by a thin film covering the majority of the remainder of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of sweet malts with a moderate amount of corn adjuncts and some light grainy adjuncts. Very light aromas of grassy hops.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of grainy malts with a moderate amount of corn adjuncts and an overall slightly stronger than light amount of sweetness. There are light flavors of grassy hops in the finish which impart a light amount of bitterness which fades away in a moderate amount of time.

M: Light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Lacks the watery aspects of a lot of Asian AALs.

O: Refreshing and easy to drink with only the very faintest of skunky aspects (surprising considering the fact that it comes all the way from Asia and is in green glass bottles). Nothing great but certainly better than I was expecting for my first beer from Myanmar, especially considering the number of disappointing offerings in this style from Asia.

Had from a 640mL brown glass bottle purchased in Portland, OR

Pours a somewhat gree/gold straw color with a chunky, large bubble white head. It's quick to dissipate, but leaves an acceptable lacing.

Super skunky and metallic aromas of old hops and dusty tin cans mask more subtle and pleasant aromas of bran, caramel, honey, lemon, and oats.

Medium bodied and malty on the palate with some ripe fruitiness.

I bought a bottle of Myanmar Lager Beer for $1.99 USD in Rosemead, California within the USA.
Look: Myanmar Lager Beer had a small amount of foam.
Smell: Myanmar Lager Beer had a magnificent fragrance of both jasmine and flowers.
Taste: Myanmar Lager Beer had a mellow taste of wheat and rice.
Feel: Myanmar Lager Beer had medium carbonation with mellow bubbles.
Overall: Myanmar Lager Beer is a mellow beer. People who enjoy perfumed lite beers might enjoy Myanmar Lager Beer.

This stuff is available just about anywhere in Myanmar, and I don't just mean restaurants and bars, but on the side of the street, in the temples... you could probably even get them to brink you one if you were lying in hospital, so ubiquitious is this green-and-red-labelled beverage.

It's served mostly in large 640ml bottles, which proudly shows off the medals it has won at awards (which I note bemusedly includes the Australian International Beer Awards).

I tried it first at a roadside food outlet in Yangon, but it was pressed upon me many other times during our two week trip as well...

It pours with a golden yellow body, with almost no head. No lacing, some large-bubbled carbonation.

Nose is slightly sweet, with a little bit of fragrance, but not much. It's a pretty bland smelling beer.

Taste is pretty smooth. A little sweetness first, but balanced surprisingly well with some refreshing bitterness. Reasonably full-bodied, not as weak as many an Asian lager. After a few sips, it feels like it's coated your mouth.

Pretty good for a dry lager. Enough character to keep you interested, but smooth enough to gulp down and ward off the humid Burmese nights.

As an aside, Burmese beer in general is significantly better than Thai or Cambodian beer, but what with international sanctions, it's unlikely to be discovered outside its borders. Myanmar Beer is not the best the country has to offer (I would recommend Mandalay Beer a hundred times over this), but it's good to be able to find a reasonable beer like this wherever you go.
