Kunstmann cerveza from Valdivia, Chile. The best widely available beer to be had in this country, along with Austral. There are some amazing microbrews in Chile, but are harder to find.

A- Standard dark brown

S- nothing very string

T- nice malty flavor with tiny hints of coffee. Nothing overly powerful or strong tasting.

M- nice and smooth, though nothing ridiculous

D- could have a couple, not a session beer

Cerveza Kunstmann Bock (Negra) pours up with a modest effervescance that creates a smallish tann head that barely rings the glass above the deep reddish brown body. Head retention is quite good however! The aroma is surprisingly complex with hints of blackstrap molasses, burnt caramel, tobacco leaf, wet leather, etc... lots of roast, but balanced by sweetness. Way to roasty for a bock, but not unlike a Baltic Porter. The flavor isn't as complex but has a nice balance between the sweetness & roastiness. Medium-light bodied with some creaminess. This isn't a bad little beer at all! Drinks more like an German-style Schwarzbier than a bock.

Kuntsmann is a German brewery making their wares in Southern Chile. Apparently, they have a brewery that was made back in the 1800's and there is a large German population within the country. Their bock is by far the best beer being made in Chile, closely following the Kross Stout. I enjoyed my first on draft while having a light lunch at Phone Box Pub in Santiago.

Poured a wooden brown with a light tan head. Limited retention with excellent lacing. Aroma of caramel and tame hops. Caramel runs the show here, with some light hops. Went down very smooth and light, with a very light lingering sweetness afterwards. Drinkability was just short of perfect, even with 85 degree, sunny weather.

[Eyes] Brown color with a light whitw head. the head is poor in retention.

[Nouse] The aroma is smooth with little notes of caramel and hops, in my glass...

[ Mouth] Is fresh very smooth and light, with a very light sweetness aftertaste, not bad not good...
but excelent for a sunny daaay.

Poured from the bottle with little head over a very dark body. Smell was of licourice and yeast. The taste was initially very grassy with an acidic-ish tang that lingered. Malt and chocolate came to the fore as the beer went down. Mouthfeel was thick and a bit sticky. Overall, I rather enjoyed this beer and was expecting something closer to a dunkel, but definitely try a few more bocks if this one is anything to go by.

Appearance: Pours tea brown with a couple of inches of foam; plenty of lacing

Smell: Slightly toasty and slightly sweet, with a hint of grain

Taste: Toasted malt with a hint of caramel, up front, with a grainy finish

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with crisp carbonation

Overall: Consumed in a bar in Santiago while watching Chile down Spain 2-0 in the World Cup, this beer will always be more memorable for the time and place rather than its quality; as others have noted, it isn't really a bock, but I think of it more as a Euro Dark Lager than a Schwarzbier though it has been a while since I have tasted either style so I wouldn't be a stickler

Black color with a caramel head thick head with medium retention and leaving some laces.
Delicious predominant and strong aroma of chocolate, licorice and some molasses.
Flavor of roasted malts with notes of coffee, earthy hops, cocoa powder, licorice and dark fruits. Dry and bitter aftertaste.
Light deceiving body with good carbonation and some acidity.
Good brew, it is more of a Porter or Schwarzbier than a bock though. More subtle grains and hay than their other beers, but their trade mark is still there. Not that complex, but it is shows character on what is exposed. One of the best offerings from Kunstmann.

Pint poured at Kunstmann Brewery in Valdivia, Chile.

Appearance: Dark brown, good clarity, o.k. retention of off-white head

Smell: Medium malt aroma, touch of caramel and lightly toasted malt aromas. Little to no hop character.

Taste: Immediate light toasted grain taste, faint bitterness, and sweet malt in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, crisp bock with nice not-overpowering malts at the end.

Overall: Best widely available beer in Chile. Very fresh from brewery. Good Chilean session beer.

had i friend bring up a few of the their beers while in peru. but they sat for a bit.

great dark bock. nice render of a bock. smooth toffee and very drinkable. rather surprising freshness. very mild doppelbock characteristics that make it very easy to have several. get food accompany beer if you intend on snacking for a while and washing it down. pours like a good doppelbock. about 2 finger of head poured into a bock glass. nice toastiness. nice minerality. and a maltiness that is first and foremost german. a bit of munich in the malt. if in the area, seek it out.

A - a black body with a medium tan head. The foam settles at an average pace and leaves decent lace.

S - light malt notes with a hint of molasses.

T - light, grainy malt up front. Some caramel and molasses in the middle as notes of chocolate appear with moderate bitterness in the finish.

M - medium body, moderately high carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - Not bad, it its a bit light and watery for the style, but it has some genuine malt character in the finish and is much better than the other kunstmann beer I tried.
