De Hipercor. En copa Teku. En almuerzo, con sopa de fideos + carne de cocido. Algo mejor que la típica lager industrial, con algo mas de dulce maltosidad

33cl can in glass tumbler.

A- Dark golden hue, with tight white 3 finger head, good head retention.

S- Crisp hoppiness with a more obvious caramelly malt note than the lower abv regular pilsner version

T- An upfront hop bite which trancends smoothly to a caramel/toffeish malty note with the hops coming back in the finish.

M- Crisp, moderate, hint syrupy.

D- More tasty than the pilsner version, albeit not as clean a finish with the more apparent maltiness which robs it of its refreshing qualities

Espezial is a much better alternative to Dorada's boring Pilsner. It poured in a perfect yellow color with nice foam and smelled of bread, sourness and a little acid. The taste was on the sweetish side (but not really sweet as such) and bitter with bread notes and a citric bite. On the disappointing side was the short aftertaste. It's a very straightforward lager beer but it must be appreciated in the context of the hot local climate. On a sunny day it's actually very functional in that sense - ice cold, bubbly, refreshing, citric. In one bar I visited on Tenerife they even kept the glasses in a freezer.

Brought back from Spain for me by a friend who wanted to get me something somewhat obscure and beer related. She of course succeeded on both accounts, as this is apparently only a regional Canary Islands/Spain brew. A fairly standard pale lager.

Served cold, it presents a beautiful soapy white head and crystal clear appearance. Frankly, it looked fake -- really. The head was so white and so "perfect," I was a bit surprised. Not knowing much about the brewer or their reliance (or lack thereof) upon chemicals or nasty adjuncts, I can't really knock them for it, of course. They've got a pretty product.

Too bad it has virtually no aroma other than a stale wet grain sweetness. Grainy, simple flavors. I suppose keeping the style in mind, that's all I should expect. But like many others in the style, the flavor blends together a bit with its comrades. Crisp. No real overwhelming bitterness. Fairly well balanced. I can see this being pretty appealing on a hot day. And it certainly doesn't seem to ruin itself as it warms. Pretty drinkable once you get past the bland repetitiveness of it all.
