A big, mouth-watering IPA, brimming with all the flavors and aromas of the new breed of hops coming from Australia and the Pacific Northwest.

Had cold and on tap at The Purple Pub in Williamstown, MA. As in other reviews I've made, I'll make the disclaimer that I think I have relatively insensitive taste buds, so I tend to like big beers, strong coffee, spicy food. Someone with more gentle or discerning taste buds might feel differently.

Appearance: A pleasant, slightly hazy burnt orange. Moderate carbonation and a nice lacing on the glass.

Smell: Brown rice, but no other notes per se. No hops at all. Don't get much here, maybe partially because the beer was quite cold.

Taste: Doesn't taste bad at all, but as with the smell, not a punch to the flavor. I get that soft brown rice flavor again, all the way through, a little lemon in the middle as the beer warmed up, and a pleasant but subtle hops bite lingering at the end. Fairly dry and crisp, never sweet.

Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation, and the lingering hops for a second or two is pleasant. Would prefer a little more malt sweetness personally.

Quite drinkable, no off-tastes or nasty surprises. I could see this working well for a lot of people as a session beer. Just personally prefer my IPAs to have strong, opposing flavors that come to a balanced consensus like those doubles on the West Coast have (Racer 5, Maximus,...).

One of those earthy, oldschool-leaning IPAs that presses flavor buttons I didn't expect any sort of liquid to press when I first got into drinking. Flavor buttons more aligned with a meal than a beverage. So, I thought something was wrong with it the first time I had it, but turns out there was something wrong with me. I just had to get over the "learning curve." The abv isn't too high but in terms of flavor it's loud and big and draws attention to itself, so it doesn't go with everything.

I haven't sampled this beer in about a decade; I've generally avoided IPAs in recent years, having become bored with their ubiquity. I liked this beer when I was into IPAs, so I've opted to revisit it.

It's an opaque orange beer with a thick, last white head. There's a refreshingly old-school, citrusy, lemony hop aroma. It's full-bodied, rich, and warming. I'm off IPAs generally, but I still like this one.

By far the best of all LongTrail IPAs. Really classic Imperial with a total balance of bitter and sweet. Also perfectly hop-malt balance. Foam is good. Mouthfeel and aftertaste are world class. Cheers!

Poured heavy into a Pilsner glass. Result: a four fingered white foamy head. Fair lacing occurred thru session. Color is opaque amber. Nose is not prevalent. Taste is dry, heavy pine and dank earthy malt. Also various hops come thru. In summary a very good traditional IPA.

Limbo IPA

Long Trail Brewing Company IPA - American
Notes:

Lets take a step back in time: A time when big IPA's were clear amber and gold in color lol. Sea foamy cap is classic. Pine resin and orange peel hop nose. Bitter, resinous pine hop flavor upfront, dry, but leafy, earthy dry in the finish. A classic.

Six pack copped from Joe Canal's in Parsippany. Pours a golden effervescent hue with minimal frothing. Pungent aroma replete with notes of apricot and grapefruit. Similar overall flavor profile. Unquaffable with an awkward finish.

Although first sampled years ago, here's an initial review. For it, two 12 oz. bottles are poured into a clear glass liter mug. The color is a light copper-amber that is rather translucent. Although well carbonated, the modest white head is mostly short lived. The smell is more of earthy malt than sharp hops. There is some glass lacing that probably outperforms the head. The taste is close to a perfect blend of malt and hops, sweetness and bitterness and smooth whilst somewhat earthy. A little more sweet, that is a little more, than bitter and just a little too much alcohol hit keeps this from a perfect 10 (taste and mouthfeel combined). In the times of overloading IPAs with oates and wheat, this is a wonderful reminder of how good a simple IPA can be.

Hazy, amber/orange appearance with an average size, off white head and nice lacing. Aroma of grapefruit dominates with subtle soft fruit in the background. That’s a blueprint for the taste as well; citrusy hops balanced by a clean malt backbone. ABV creeps up as the aftertaste unfolds. Medium bodied, moderately carbonated mouthfeel leading to a lasting finish.
