Bottled 10/17/16
12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip style pint glass.

Pours nearly black and opaque with one finger of thick light brown foam comprised of micro-bubbles that leave sheets of lacing on the side of the glass.

The nose is mainly mild aromas of roasted and caramel malt, chocolate and a hint of vanilla. Taste is mostly malty with a hint that of hop character and moderate bitterness that last right through to the finish where I am getting coffee. Otherwise semi-sweet and roasty with caramel and I think a little bit of oat flavor. Mouth feel is a little lighter than I'd like, medium bodied with carbonation about the same and a little bit of an oat feel.

Overall a decent American Stout if maybe a little thin.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass. The appearance was a black color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated nicely. Light lacing runs here and there in a decently formed glaze all around. The smell takes in robust to bitter coffee bean and coffee grounds roaming into a light black licorice here and there. The taste embraces the previously mentioned flavors to bounce on into each other and slide into the aftertaste. Dry on the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium in body with the robust coffee portion coming about nicely. Brings about a slight stickiness on my tongue. Overall, I’d say this was a pretty good American Stout that I would have again.

Very dark. Head brown. Rich and deep stout flavor, no bitterness. Thick feel. Perfect.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and an opaque consistency. There was a small amount of foamy, tan-colored head that quickly dissipated. Not a whole lot of lacing.

S: A fair aroma of malt, coffee, chocolate, and brown sugar. Slightly underwhelming.

T: Tasted of a bit of chocolate (could have used more), some brown sugar, lots of roasted malt, a definite lactose presence, light coffee notes, a little caramel, and light hops. Like the aroma, the flavor was something of a letdown. None of the ingredients was forceful enough. Might have gotten an old bottle here.

F: A decent amount of carbonation with a super dry finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is an unfortunately uneven beer. Not terrible, but forgettable.

(12 oz bottle, bottled 12/06/16... purchased warm on singles shelf, chilled, sat out for 30+ min... poured into teku)

L: opaque, black liquid topped with finger-width high, nearly ruddy brown foam that collapses to a misty, sudsy cap

S: deep ground coffee aroma with a potent display of naked chocolate malt and roasted barley... rugged, toasty, woody maltiness lurking below... tiny hint of a tonic alcohol and malt sweetness, but the raw roasted aromas are very much way out front - great potency

T: the bold roasty, woody-nutty character is at the forefront, backed by an unexpectedly-dense, luscious malt backbone... earthy, herbal bitterness lingers in the aftertaste, coupled and mashed together with a mildly acrid, charcoal-esque deep-roasted grain... not much sweetness (likely balanced by assertive bitter hopping), aside from hint of toffee midway - leans way more toward coffee than chocolate... robust, bitter,

F: relatively thick-bodied with a delicately-gritty, dirty viscosity... mild heat through its dry, sparse, thinly-oily finish... long-lingering, lovely, mildly numbing bitterness... liquid meal, maybe a good pairing for some raw, salty/spicy shellfish

O: the build is reminiscent of some of the Scandinavian black ales, but with an undeniable American malt/hop/ester character - brawny flavor intensity, but no real unique character outside it's hearty fore-mouthfeel... been staring at this on that shelf for months now - I may just get more

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 1/7/2016. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky tan head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, caramel, toffee, vanilla, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of licorice, dark fruits, smoke, charcoal, leather, herbal, floral, light pepper, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, caramel, toffee, vanilla, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of licorice, dark fruits, smoke, charcoal, leather, herbal, floral, light pepper, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness. Light-moderate roast/char and herbal/spicy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, caramel, toffee, vanilla, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, floral, light pepper, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with an awesome roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; zero cloying, acrid, or astringent flavors after the finish. Light dryness from roast/hop bitterness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy, and fairly silky/sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.9%. Overall this is a fantastic American stout! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Very rich and complex on malt flavors; with complimenting fruity yeast and earthy hops in the background. A spot on style example, and highly enjoyable offering.

Served in a signature Unearthed glass from the bottle.

Appearance: Thin brownish black body with a dark tan head rising maybe two finger's length from the body. Settles very slowly unless you can't help but sip away with very sticky lacing.

Smell: coffee brown sugar and malts...you can really smell it but it dissipates before you place the glass down.

Taste: heavy bitter and lightly sweet, super malty and you can few light molasses in the brew.

Mouth: Medium to heavy at the beginning but loses a bit of it slowly as you drink which makes the beer just right. Medium stickiness with a roasted finish.

Overall: Tough brew to grade but I factor many things in and honestly I think it's a steal. Full of flavor and robust which would make it a sin to leave on the shelf if you never had it. Salud!
