This malty, full-bodied double alt is also known as “Stickebier” – German slang for “secret brew”. Long Trail Double Bag was originally offered only in our brewery taproom as a special treat to our visitors. With an alcohol content of 7.2%, please indulge in moderation. The Long Trail Brewing Company is proud to have Double Bag named Malt Advocate’s “Beer of the Year” in 2001. Malt Advocate is a national magazine devoted to “expanding the boundaries of fine drinks”. Their panel of judges likes to keep things simple, and therefore of thousands of eligible competitors they award only two categories: “Imported” and “Domestic”. Picked up a bottle at the local supermarket. First time I had seen this and I have liked other Long Trail beers. Poured into a pint glass not much head or carbonation. Scent is malty faint alcohol and appearance is nice dark copper. Taste is malty and nice for sipping. Better as it warms and is exactly what is described. Not my favorite but good for a late night.

12 oz bottle from VA in a Laughing Skull glass.
Lovely copper body with great clarity but only a short head despite a aggressive pour. The head, nonetheless, has excellent retention.
Mild aroma with obvious alcohol.
Surprisingly full and complex flavor has hints of toffee, vanilla, honey, and brown sugar. Somme roasted nuts appear in the moderately bitter aftertaste.
Smooth and full bodied feel where the high ABV is partly hidden.

I got this in a mixed 12pck in PA near the WV border. This poured a hazy amber with no head and no lace. The scent had hints of sweet malt. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink. The mouthfeel was fuller in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a decent beer.

Medium amber and clear, thin finger of head in a shaker on tap at The Good Life in Massapequa. Malt-forward and smooth, some caramel sweetness, mild nut tones, and a vague pale fruit impression. Smooth, medium-bodied, and mild.

Copper red color, medium carbonation. Even though malt is a primary flavor it is balanced with some sort of mild hop background taste. It was a good beer that I would try again as it was an easy middle of the road beer meaning it wasn't extreme in any way. Just a unique beer

The appearance is a clear yet dark amber/brown colored body with a short slightly creamy looking head, spotty lacing drips down the side of the glass as it goes down. The smell is malty and slightly fruity with some nuts that try to carry over slightly. The taste is a rich and well balanced malty fruitiness. On the palate its about a medium in body, comes across fairly sessionable, no aftertaste with a dry earthy finish, slightly crisp. Overall, this is a good beer for its style and good to me.

I've tried to like this beer, but despite my best efforts to delve into it's mystique I just find it a very boring beer. Primary character is malty, but I wouldn't call it a malt bomb. Kind of like an androgynous beer that's not quite sure what it wants to be. It's not offensive at all, nor is it exciting. One or two and I've had enough.
