Notes / Commercial Description:
This malty, full-bodied double alt is also known as “Stickebier” – German slang for “secret brew”. Long Trail Double Bag was originally offered only in our brewery taproom as a special treat to our visitors. With an alcohol content of 7.2%, please indulge in moderation. The Long Trail Brewing Company is proud to have Double Bag named Malt Advocate’s “Beer of the Year” in 2001. Malt Advocate is a national magazine devoted to “expanding the boundaries of fine drinks”. Their panel of judges likes to keep things simple, and therefore of thousands of eligible competitors they award only two categories: “Imported” and “Domestic”. It is a great honor to receive this recognition.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Dark amber in color, with a creamy white head and some chill haze.

Smell: The aroma of pungent grainy malt is made more refined by fresh floral hops. And yet, the bouquet is not quite balanced, as the smell of multigrain Cheerios really fights for the forefront.

Taste: Sweet cereal grains are also present in the taste. They fail to mesh with a roasty chocolate flavor, as well as some sulfuric sourdough.

Mouthfeel: Medium mouthfeel and carbonation, with a slightly bitter, yet otherwise crisp, clean finish.

Overall: Interesting, but not in the most appetizing way. Could see it growing on me, however. The juxtaposition of the flavors, while not outright complementary, definitely gives one something to mull over.

look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

Appearance -Dark copper and clear in color. Little to no head.

Smell - Sweet cherry and grape aroma. Malt sweetness. Clean with no hops.

Taste - Very malty sweet up front. A nice spicy hop in the back end. Finishes crisp but malty. Lingering spicy bitterness. Nice clean malt-forward beer with enough hops to balance it out.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

Overall - A very nice, clean, crisp beer. Definitely malt-heavy without being out of balance. Crisp finish with lingering bitterness keeps you coming back for more. In no way would I guess this was over 7% ABV. It's a bit big for the style (altbier), but it's a great beer.
