Notes / Commercial Description:
This malty, full-bodied double alt is also known as “Stickebier” – German slang for “secret brew”. Long Trail Double Bag was originally offered only in our brewery taproom as a special treat to our visitors. With an alcohol content of 7.2%, please indulge in moderation. The Long Trail Brewing Company is proud to have Double Bag named Malt Advocate’s “Beer of the Year” in 2001. Malt Advocate is a national magazine devoted to “expanding the boundaries of fine drinks”. Their panel of judges likes to keep things simple, and therefore of thousands of eligible competitors they award only two categories: “Imported” and “Domestic”. It is a great honor to receive this recognition.

Bottle > Pint Glass

A - Pours a nice amber color, minimal head with nearly no lacing.
S - Big time sweet malts, breads and an underlying fruitiness to it that rings of a belgian quality, a small hint of alcohol.
T - Big full sweet malt, a medium and welcomed hop bite, mildly bitter, a few spices as well. Interesting and moderately complex.
M - Thin, and a bit of a dark bitterness hangs on, nothing super.
O - Actually a pretty good offering from Long Trail, I'm not really familiar with this style, but its not what I expected, but it does have a nice complexity in taste that is good and refreshing. Would really like to get this on tap.

On tap at The Village Tavern in Geneseo, NY.

Pours a clear dark amber, with a small half inch head, and a little bit of lacing down the glass.

Smells strongly of caramel and toffee- great malts here.

The taste is similar. Slightly hoppy flavor- grassy and slightly piney, with a warm rich malt flavor. The bitterness from the hops keeps the malt flavor from being too sweet, which is nice. Like drinking a big toasty piece of bread, really.

Medium bodied, crisp mouthfeel, the alcohol is not present, which is awesome.

Long Trail's altbier is a great beer- not quite a traditional version, but still quite tasty nonetheless. It is better on tap than in the bottle.

12oz into a snifter.
Pours a caramel/amber color with an almost non-existent head which disappears instantly to leave a thin topping. Smells caramel, some cereals, little earthy notes, slightly herbal at the back. Flavors are very mild and clean. Similar to the nose and, in my opinion, not so enjoyable. Moderate carbonation with low bitterness. I didn't like this one. Wonder if it's a bad bottle or I just don't like the style...

12oz bottle poured into a pilsner glass.

Appearance
Golden amber with 1 finger of white head that dissipates quickly. Great clarity and low carbonation.

Nose
Sweet apple cider, breads and caramel.

Taste
Very sweet apple cider-like flavors. Carnival drizzled candy apples, buttered biscuits and sweet breads. Touches of brown sugar and a subtle earthy bitterness.

Mouthfeel
Medium-full bodied, clean and smooth.

Overall
Sweet and biscuity. Incredibly easy drinking and smooth for 7.2%. Always a fan of the Double Bag.

A: Rich copper, very clear.

S: Very malty and fruity, almost Belgian.

T: Not especially "strong" in anything other than ABV. Deceptive.

M: Light, sweet, malty.

O: Hands down--by far--Long Trail's best year-round, probably all together. Not to mention the fact that, at just a dollar more than any other LT 6-pack, it is a steal here in Long Trail's home state. One of my choice, go-to VT sixers under $10.
