Long Trail Imperial Porter features a complex, darkly roasted malt flavor complemented by a thin, creamy head. The abundance of malt is balanced with a variety of hops, creating a clean finish. The recipe has been a homebrew secret that was developed by one of our own brewers. We are proud to present Long Trail Imperial Porter...ENJOY!

Long Trail's version of an Imperial Porter is fragrant with malts and hops, smelling somewhat like an extra-creamy mocha with a side of grapefruit juice. Caramelized brown sugars, dark chocolates, and subtle hints of black coffee mark the malts, and the hops are surprisingly strong for a porter.

On the tongue, there's an immediate battle between hops and malts, and for the better part of the mouthful, the malts win. Creamy chocolate malt and dark chocolate dominate the early rounds, joined by coffees, light tobaccos, and hints of ash and peat. Midway through the struggle, however, the darker sugars peel back to reveal a citrusy base, with grapefruit and lychee nut, as well as hints of caramelized apricot. The malts do make a comeback late into the fight, giving the aftertaste a distinct burnt-grain glow that fades slowly. Mouthfeel is medium, as is carbonation.

Overall, this is a good porter, with excellent flavors and a surprisingly strong hop counter (56 IBUs, which is more than is found in many IPAs).

Cellared for an indefinite amount of time - I'm guessing around 4 to 5 years. Started the habit of marking with a silver sharpie some point after that.

Brown on the pour, very deep brown nearly black in the glass. Dark tan head, very good size and retention. Aroma of vanilla, chocolate, roasted malts, albeit a little less strong than preferred. Taste is perfect for an imperial porter vs a stout - everything in the aroma, but not overpowering, and the finish is shorter. Body is also thinner than an imperial stout, but thicker than a normal porter with just the right amount of carbonation.

Overall - a standard by which to judge any imperial porter, and no negative signs from aging after this substantial time.
