Great Lakes Karma Citra IPAGreat Lakes Karma Citra IPA
Notes: News of any new hop coming from the Yakima Valley perks the ears of IPA brewers everywhere, but, with Citra, things were different. The buzz was bigger. As Citra’s wave rolled across the land from the west coast we waited… and waited. Finally it crested, and a sample crashed into our pilot system. After brewing with it all the buzz made sense. Comments ranged from “Well that changes the game” to “It’s so good it feels like we’re cheating.” Today we procure as much as Citra as we can to bring you as much of this IPA as our little brewery can muster. All hail Citra!

Bomber from the LCBO. Pours a cloudy medium orange with a luxurious thick white head leaving a fair amount of lacing. Aromas of citrus and mango, some molasses with a touch of pine. Very creamy mouthfeel. Tastes are of orange peel, but not overly bitter. Almost creamsickle-like at times. Light caramel backbone especially on the swallow. Overall I am a growing fan of Citra hops and this one illustrates all of the good things that type of hop brings to the beer glass.

Caramel gold and super hazy, topped with a massive 6 finger off white head. No visible carbonation.

Smells of onions, pine and citrus.

Tastes of onions, pine and citrus, with a light sweetness.

Light, slightly nectarous body, low carbonation.

Had for my 2nd time Oct 21st, 2016, in New Hamburg, ON. Well done brew!

Bomber from the Ottawa LCBO for $6 or so

Appearance - Gold colour with a large size white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some great lacing. The head lasted for around 4-5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Hops, breads/grains, lemon/apricot/peach/grapefruit

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste lots of fruits - peach/apricot/grapefruit and some resiny hops. There is also some light malt and a touch of a herbal flavour.

Overall - Some great hoppy/fruity flavour. Another great IPA from this brewer. If this was available year round in a tall can at a $3 price point, it would be a staple in my fridge.

A - Pours with a thick, foamy head that lasts a good while. This beer has a beautiful hazy amber hue.

S - Citrus, primarily grapefruit, followed by some malty sweetness and some resin. Absolutely lovely smelling beer.

T - Like the smell, citrus, light malt sweetness and resin. A bit of pine as well. This is very tasty I really enjoy this. I find that the balance between the bitterness and sweetness is right where I like it. My palate really enjoys this beer.

M - Medium carbonation.

O - This is the best Canadian IPA that I have ever had. Really good stuff.

Served in Snifter on tap at Milos craft beer emporium

Appearance - Tangerine, crystal clear definitely a filtered beer, poured a finger and a half of head with decent lacing.

Nose - Wow, this smells amazing. Citrus up front, pineapple, apricot, grapefruit, pine, resin, slight toffee smell. Can't wait to taste.

Taste - Man this is helluva good beer. Very hop forward. Citrus, pineapple, grapefruit, pine resin, then the Malts bring up the back just enough to sweeten the hop bitterness out but not to take away from the hop forward ness. Left with a slight crisp hop bitterness. Feels like pine resin sitting in the back of the throat, man this is a good IPA.

Overall - I think this is one of the best Canadian IPAs I've had. Is place it right behind Central city's Red Racer. Definitely try it if you have the chance, it's a shame GLB doesn't brew this year round. Cheers

On tap at Hardrock 42 in Sudbury

Appearance: It has a nice deep golden/orange color to it. It has a nice off-white head that dies down moderately and leaves some nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of tropical fruit (mango, pineapple, citrus) and some faint bready malts. Very nice.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a nice tropical flavor, some piney resin, light caramel and some breadiness.

Mouthfeel: It has a low/med carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with great flavors and aromas. Definitely one of the best IPA's in Ontario right now. I hope they start brewing this regularly.

On draught at Indie Ale House. Reviewed from notes

A - Poured a nice golden colour with a perfect finger and a half of white head. Dissipates rather quickly but leaves nice lacing.

S - Mango, sweet pineapple, grapefruit the citra is pouring out of this beer.

T - Hops all over your palate. All of the great tropical notes from the nose as well as this hop resinous take over when drinking. The bitterness stays on the palate for a long time. Truly a great tasting IPA.

M - Light mouthfeel, really easy drinking 6.6% beer. Again, the hops really coat the tongue, its so great.

O - My favourite of the GLB beers, and the best IPA out of Ontario in my opinion. I liken it to Zombie Dust, which is also a single hop citra beer. I look forward to it again and again and again. Also note that out of the bottle, this beer is really good, but not as hop forward as the pint I had on tap.

Under the guise of Burt's Private Stache. Thanks to jrenihan for this one.

Poured from a bomber.

Appearance: Creamy 3 finger, totally hazy, good lacing that completely merges with the glass.

Smell: Tropical fruit, citrus, lemon, fresh and inviting.

Taste: Bit of sweet caramel, citrus rinds, grapefruit, good flavor from start to finish, actually gets fuller as it warms a bit.

Mouthfeel: Real full body, medium carbonation, astringency felt more in the aftertaste.

Overall: A home run for me. Doesn't re-invent the IPA but is still pretty tasty.

Bomber from the brewery, under the guise of Burts Reserve Stache.

Pours coppery orange with a massive foamy tan / orange hue head. Nose is bright with grapefruit, citrus, oily hops galore: fantastic. Taste is rich with the hops, but quickly diminished by the balancing caramel malt. Pineapple, citrus, pear, and sweet malt. Mouthfeel is decent, medium bodied.

Overall, the absolute best beer from Great Lakes I've tried and quite frankly the best Ontario made IPA. Why this isn't their flagship beer and readily available is shockingly confounding. Get this beauty into LCBO Great Lakes! Incredible beer!

The pour is a clear golden color with a finger of white head. Light grass notes along with citrus peel and pine. A touch of pineapple along with some pale maltiness. A bit of candied citrus peel along with some grapefruit peel, pine, and grass. Sweetness from pale malt and a little bit of caramel.

Beer is cloudy orange. Medium sized white head. Great retention and lacing.

Nose is full of juicy citrus notes. Grapefruit and orange stick out. A very sticky smell, if you permit the synaesthesia.

Following the nose, taste has a great citrus flavour. Grapefruit, lemon and orange. Very juicy. Fairly bitter. A bit of a caramel malt backing, but definitelty a hop focused beer.

Great feel. Medium bodied, moderate natural carbonation. Sticky.

Overall, very good indeed. Between a 4 and 4.5 for taste for me.

On tap at Burgerbar in Toronto.

Clear amber with a soft off white head. Nose is slight musty, grapefruit, husky grain and a boozy tinge. Big juicy grapefruit flavour and sharp resinous body. Mouth feel itself is soft with barely-there carbonation. Hints of apple and bright fruitiness. Solid bitterness doesn't detract from excellent drink ability.

650ml bomber poured into tulip 30/5/12 bottle sent out by liamt07 Cheers dude

A hazy orange copper that glows, lots of tiny bubbles struggling to make their way to the thick looking liquid, a thick inch of dense foam sits around for a few minuets leaving a couple partial rings of lace

S I might believe this was juice if I was blind folded, big tropical notes sweet orange, mango, tangerine, and pineapple come out strong with a little grapefruit. There's not much cat tinkle this hops known for its a tropical fruit blast and I'm digging it

T not a complete hop runaway with a little caramel malt and some lemon rind and pine coming out, not quite the tropical fruit blast I could smell but still solid

M fairly full bodied and the tiny bubbles cream it up a little, mild bite for 70 IBU's and a piney rind finish lingers

O this ones hitting all the right buttons this evening, smells near perfect, feels great and solid flavor. What more do you need?

When I think about it I've had plenty of Citra centric beers lately and this is one of the better uses of the hop I've encountered. I'd love to drink this again but somehow doubt I'll get the chance, for now I'll just thank liamt07 again for sending me one.

Poured on cask at Coles in downtown buffalo.

Poured a deep yellowish orange, with a thin lace head, some nice alcohol legs and sticky slime around the glass. WOW, Citra, WOW! Big deep apple, mango, tangerine, grapefruit and cat piss. Big citrus fruits all around, big marijuana like floral scents also. Tart citrus fruits aggressively attack the tongue, overwhelming hop presence. Finishes smooth with slight lemon bitterness. Light to medium bodied, sticky and slimy going down. This is a fantastic IPA, if you like citra hops you will love this beer, i sure did.

Hazy golden orange, decent white head with some lace on the glass. Smell is all citrus, grapefruit, mango, tangerine, nice malting and honey. Taste is hoppy, firm bitterness throughout, dry, loads of citrus fruit, grapefruit, tangerine, very nice stuff. Mouthfeel is good, oily and resinous, medium carbonation and nice body overall. Great citrusy IPA, easy drinking and so very enjoyable.

Courtesy of northyorksammy (thanks!). ABV on this batch is 7%. Poured from a 22oz bomber into my Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Lightly hazy amber liquid with a delicate ivory head that recedes to a slick and collar. Decent lacing, and viscous legs.

Aroma is clean and brisk with a touch of pale malt with an indistinct fruitiness (dragon fruit?).

Surprisingly herbaceous palate entry with a moderate but lasting bitterness. Some fruit arrives briefly (pineapple?), but the finish is more on the spicy side, with notes of scallion, chives, and dandelion greens. Nicely balanced with malt. More fruit (tangelo?) comes through as the beer warms.

Medium-light bodied, with low yet sufficient carbonation. Very slightly oily (in a good way).

Single hop beers are perhaps more educational than they are delicious, though I enjoyed this one in any case. Overall this has some marked similarities to Torpedo, though with a greater purity of expression.

Tasting notes from 5/27/11
Project X Bottle obtained from the brewery. Very fresh.
Poured in to Duvel tulip glass. IBU = 70. ABV = 7%.

A - Medium yellow/amber colour with one finger of foamy cream-coloured head.

S - Big nose of tropical fruit and citrus up front with some pine. Grapefruit, pineapple, apricot, orange rind, tangerine. A good bitterness and a slight sweet caramel backbone. Definitely a hop-forward IPA with a very robust and inviting nose.

T - Grapefruit, pine, tangerine, pineapple. A nice bitterness that dominates but doesn't seem unbalanced despite only a very slight caramel sweetness from the malts.

M - Medium body. Light carbonation.

On tap at Volo, Great Lakes/Mike Lackey feature. Into a tulip.

Poured a somewhat tangerine-orange, heavy webbed lace leaving a collar and some mild retention behind. Nose has some tangerine, tropical fruits, mango and some mild pine. Lots of hops, can smell the bitterness emanating from this. Taste follows, clearly hop forward with some more tangerine and mango. Lots of fruits going on here, difficult to pick out them with precision. Mouthfeel was fairly standard I thought, and the drinkability is hindered by a bit of a lack of balance. I'd definitely revisit this one however, solid stuff Great Lakes. 4 4 4 4 4

EDIT: Had again from a Project X bottle. More orange, tangerine and mandarin orange in the nose than I can recall initially; super juicy. Tropical, and some otherwise similar to the nose in terms of orange and tangerine mixes with a light alcoholic note. Bitterness, even at 70 IBUs isn't terribly noticeable. Very juicy and tropical, a nice use of the Citra hop. Very enjoyable. 45 45 4 4 45

On-tap at Volo. I hope this is brewed again, a good application of this hop. Orange colour and orange aromas and orange citrus taste, the hop was put early in the boil and it hit the spot without any funkiness or off notes at all. Above average mouthfeel.
