Thanks to Rosemary and Stuart for bringing this back from Berlin. The bottle's fresh as can be, being dated best before 10/2005 on the rear label. I've got a few months to go yet. Excellent work, guys!
The beer pours a rusty brown, more my idea of a dunkel lager than a schwarzbier. Nevertheless, it's crystal clear, a couple carbonation bubbles meandering up here and there, topped with a heaping, pillowy layer of cream-colored foam, forcing me to wait a moment and admire as it settles enough so I can pour the last few ounces into the glass. Excellent head retention, keeping a thick layer atop the brew all the way through, leaving sheets of lace clinging to my Spaten willibecker glass. Lacing like this is pretty rare in my experience. Two thumbs up so far.
The aroma is elegant and refined. Crispy clean lagering, with an even exchange between toffee maltiness and a floral, soapy hop fragrance. You can practically smell the surgical cleanliness of the brewery. Just a trace of plum-like esters, adding a soft fruity undertone.
The flavor opens with a silky smooth caramel maltiness. Immediately sweet, but not overly so. Really very clean, with minimal off flavors, if any at all. Perhaps the barest touch of grass and plum fruitiness, but that could just be the malt playing into the floral hops. A slight roasty flair into the finish, done german style, with that signature dark lager softness. Surprisingly hoppy in the finish, an ample amount of floral, soapy noble hops, leaving off with a pleasant bitterness that sticks to the tongue. The carbonation is incredible, with that light, yet persuasive prickle I associate with real-deal german brewing. Fairly light bodied, making this far too easy to drink.
This is fantastic. Probably the best schwarzbier I've had so far. I'm sure the freshness helps, but I can't get over the bold hopping. Uncharacteristic for the style, at least in my experience. Aside from the color, which is basically just eye candy, this is perfect. My only real complaint is that I don't have a case of this to hold me over until someone else I know makes a trip to Berlin city.

500 cl bottle with nice old-styled label.

Color is dark, although I can't call it black, it's rather mahogany-brown.

Smell is delicious, with plenty of roated malts and toffeish notes.

Forms a handsome creamy crown. Carbonation is low. Sweetish start, rich full body with occasional grape and chocolate in it. Malty-hoppy finish.

Being full and potent, this bber is not heavy. Recommended!

I like this one a lot. Very soft and elegant, with a slightly punchy bitter finish. Not in your face, which is something i like about it. Very soft choc-roastiness, beatifully soft texture, interesting in an elegant/refined way.

Appearence: Nice old style bottle with a freshness date. Lovely brown color. Nice frothy head. Good carbonation but not too much for the style.

Smell: Rich sweet very nice. Appealing makes you want to drink it.

Taste: Once again very sweet malty. Slight hint of hops at the end but nothing to over power the sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Good not too rich. Enough to make you know its there. Great sweetness traced in there.

Overall: Its hard to find a beer my girlrfriend will drink. The creamy sweetness of this was right up our ally. Great brew especially for the area.

Pours a near black red. Large cola head that quickly disapates. I'm not seeing any lacings whatsoever.

I find the aroma slightly unpleasant, perhaps a little too sweet. Milk chocolate like with a bit of caramel, too much of a good thing. Maybe a little bit of corn in there too.

A little bit of roastiness upfront providing some welcome bitterness, but it's definately from hopping rather than roasting. This turns into semi-sweet dark chocolate. This Schwarzbier manages to achieve that rare and difficult feat of making a lager seem creamy.

Great mouthfeel contributes to the creaminess. Drinkability is fine. It's just the aroma that puts me off slightly. Otherwise, good example of the style.

The colour of beer is a monk robe with light ruby reflections. The foam is off-with, not very compact and not so persistent: just enough.
The smell is very weak: a little malt and frankly speaking nothing else.
In the flavour you can perceive better the roasted malt, but the whole is very light and minimized: dark beer with a low personality.
The beer is really small thing indeed: it hasn't obvious faults, but it doesn't offers any arguments for going to look in the future. It also lacks in body and structure: surely dispensable.
Other reviews talk about a strong sweetness: we haven't seen, but Schwartz is not a Dunkel beer, so the sweetness is not a so really positive note in this case.
