1999 bottle shared at Woodshop 7. Pours a hazy orange-gold with little carbonation. Dusty cobwebby aroma, straw, barnyard, musty acidic citric. Gorgeous complex flavor with lactic fruitiness, lemons, light stone fruit, berries, acetic accents. Very smooth and mellow with lots going on. An absolute delight and one of my favorite beers of the day.

This is the 1989 vintage. Pours a hazed golden orange color with a small white head. A definite cork aroma, but not really detrimental. Quite lactic with a pleasant funky quality. Lots of grass and green apple skins, musty as well. Lactic tartness is evident, but there is a mild vinegar note. Surprising amounts of oak with some mild cork flavors. Quite a bit of lemon, grass, and apple. Overall, a nice (old) gueuze.

1999 vintage at De Heeren van Liedekercke

A: Copper orange. Thin foam which disappears quickly.

S: Very sour nose, citruses and vinegar acidity. Fruity (orange, tangerine), orange peel. A bit dusty.

T: The mouth is also very sour, vinous, fruity (apple, citruses, yellow fruits), orange peel, light oakiness. No sign of oxidation at all. Lingering acidity on the aftertaste.

M: The puckering acidity is balanced by the relatively low carbonation.

O: Expressive, quite powerful and tasty beer. But very refreshing and easy to drink. One of the best gueuzes I've drunk.

Thanks to Kramer for bringing this one to our recent gueuze tasting. 1999 bottle.

A - Pours golden orange with a small film of white head, dissipating down to little to nothing, leaving little to no lace down the glass.

S - Smells of strong vinegar acidity, light barnyard funk, citric fruits, sour apples and quite a bit of earthy oak tannins. I can already tell this one is going to be one sour beer...

T - Starts off with what can only be described as pure acidity that threatens to melt the enamel off my teeth. Once the acidity dies down a bit you get hints of citric fruits, light funk and even more vinegar acidity. Finish is bone dry, lingering long after the finish.

M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. The pucker was INTENSE, it feels like it burned a hole in my stomach, leaving the pallet bone dry long after consumption.

O - This is easily one of the most sour beers I have ever had. Even with all of the acidity this one was still really interesting to finally try. For being this old I was pretty impressed.

1989 vintage. Poured apple cider orange with a small head. Nose is juicy, fermented apple, lightly sweet, a dash of malt, of course citrus acids and some dry earthy tones. Flavor is a pleasant sweet and sour montage, sweeter and more malty than most traditional lambic blends, with some good fermented apple, citrus, dry oak. Sour but not puckering, and not overly acidic, pretty soft feel overall. Has held up very well over the years.

I had this bottle at foofaa's enjoyed chilled from a cervoise thanks to Kramer.

The color is golden with lightly hazed clarity and quick dropping white cap which falls to a ring. The smell is pretty balsamic with intense vinous and light woody odors with slight vinegar tinge -nice if you like that sort of thing. I think the best part of this was the feel with the intense puckering and super sour tinges with dry astringent and not quite sweet feel with the sour intensity lasting long in the finish with lots of acidity.

The flvor has a big juicy taste with vinegar flavor that is sweet and sour with acidic impression on the palate. The flavor has a lemony tartness and mild grapefruit rind with a subtle funky and very oaky note. The tannin is smooth and there is gentle herbal qualiity from the wood too with light sour continuing into the finish. The overall drinkability is high for me, I like the way this held up from '99, the juicy sour elements give a complex drink to chew on and it borders on salad dressing it is so acetic.

Like many of the reviewers before me, this is the 1999 vintage shared at a recent tasting care of Kramer. Thanks again man. 750ml corked and caged bottle that opens without much excitement. Poured into a sample glass, it appears a clear orange color that looks nearly still. Some spots of lace make their way on the glass and a light swirl hardly releases a couple bubbles.

The smell is mildly reminescent of nail polish remover mixed with vinegar and apples gone apeshit. By apples gone apeshit I mean it's like apples but it's not. Maybe faintly of apple skin, but not quite when mixed with the other characteristics. Some lemony lactic notes emerge as it warms.

The taste is quite sharp. In fact, of the many brew's tasted on this fine evening, this one left the most acidic impact on me. The flavor includes vinegar and mild fruits intertwined like apple and pear skins. Some lemon and funk are evident as it warms but the mild vinegar is a large contributor to most of the profile.

This is a medium bodies brew with a low, yet acceptably enjoyable of carbonation. Very tart to acidic that is prickly on the tongue that makes for an overall big salivation factor about it. In a way, this beer sort of had a Flanders aspect about it that I wasnt crazy about but for being ~13 years old it was unique and enjoyable.

This is a 1999 vintage bottle.

This beer is a very hazy straw yellow with just a ghost of lacing. This beer is explosively sour, tart, with a little vinegar. It's got a bit of metallic and plastic-y phenols. This beer reminded me a lot of DDG, which I had at the same taste if only because of the high amounts of acetic character in both beers. This beer though is much better with more bitter orange and lemon sip. I enjoyed this beer and it held up really well for a 12 year old beer.

1999 Vintage

A: Medium straw-orange body. Small white cap. Slowly receded. Thin streaks of lacing.

S: Deep, musty tartness with lemon and orange fruit notes shining through what is other wise fairly earthy.

T: Really tart. Like grow hair on your chest tart. Nice interplay between the fruits and musty oak. I found this to have developed quite the nice complexity over the years. While it is incredibly sour and tart, there is a clearly discernible depth of flavor to this gueuze. Lemon, orange, oak, earthy must, barnyard notes and the slightest hints of salty sweat.

M: While it was incredibly tart, it wasn't what I'd consider to be abrasive. The beer coats the tongue with flavor and slowly fades with a nice lingering citric aftertaste.

O: I savored my glass for damn near an hour. Each sip was enjoyable. I'd give it a 4.75 or so if I could. Regardless, it makes you wonder what Belle-Vue could do now if they gave a real go at producing a quality gueuze.

Thanks to Chris for this one. 750ml bottle, vintage 1999 into mini-snifter.

A - Pours an orange color, white head, bubbles here and there and some slightly spotty lacing.

S - Super tart/sour, funk, tart fruit, oak. The tart/sour notes on this one are right up front and in-your-face. After the initial whiff, I can pick up some fruit notes as well with a touch of oak.

T - Very similar to the nose. Huge tartness, funk, fruit, oak. All up front and lip-puckering. Nothing too subtle about this beer, it's just "on" all the time.

M - Body is light, good carbonation, tart dry finish.

O - A very nice gueuze, but not amongst my favorites. That said, it's still enjoyable and memorable. I would have this one again, if offered, no doubt about it. Good, not great.

A big thanks to callmemickey for sharing this one with me. A bottle of the 1999 vintage. Big time want of mine -- it still is ;) -- that I was stoked to see!

The pour yields the look of a 12-year-old lambic...light carbonation is barely evident against the apricot hued straw colored body of the beer. Got a little yeast in there at the end of the pour, but no big deal there.

The aroma is an intensely funky bouquet surprisingly devoid of any acidity whatsoever. Stinky feet and horseblanket, mushrooms, dank forest floor, and earthy dry finishing notes. The flavor is almost a complete 180. What a surprise. A clean and crisp lactic sourness brings on citric notes of lemon zest, while the palate opens up this Geuze to reveal a hint of brine, stone fruits and a puckering dry finish. Not even a hint of acetic sourness, which is great to see after 12 years.

Clean, crisp, puckeringly sour, but also insanely funky in the nose, this beer is phenomenal. Definitely worth a try, and I will definitely be trying to get my hands on this again.

1999 vintage opened with Habmike, SpencerDB and Kkipple (DSTK)

Appearance: Brilliant straw-yellow pour with good carbonation

Aroma: Incredibly sour, followed by a light barnyard earthy funk, lemon and oak with a touch of vinegar.

Taste: Again, this beer is incredibly sour - it almost cuts the tongue. Lemon acidity with touches of oak and vinegar. Light, nice dose of mushroom and barnyard funk. Outside of being acidic it seems the other flavors are a bit muddled.

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation for a beer over 10 years old, a bit prickly.

Overall: Tasty, but the acidity dominates.

Pours a very clear copper color with a very small off-white head, just bubbles really.

Very intense barnyard funk aroma, hard to describe but damn good. Really nice oakiness.

Great flavor as well, awesome funk and tartness, extremely well-balanced with loads of oak and great wild complexity. Extremely sour.

Medium body with huge acidity and almost no carbonation.

Really impressive stuff. Thanks a lot, Todd, this is incredible. Pretty funny that this is apparently an InBev beer! It sure is no BMC.

pours hazy golden brown. no sign of head or lace.

aroma is great. malt and cider vinegar. horse blanket and leather. white bread and cracker. alcohol. lemon and orange.

taste is good. sour! malt and cider vinegar. horse blanket and leather. white bread and cracker. lemon and orange. low bitterness level. good complexity to the sourness.

mouthfeel is good. medium body wiht a nice dry finish. medium carbonation level.

drinkability is good. alcohol is balanced well, but it the sourness is slightly overdone.

Bottle. 1999 vintage. Pours a hazed orange rust color with a slight white head, very minimal carbonation. The aroma is fairly minimal with some notes of acetone, lemon zest citrus, with some additional sour fruit notes. Light mouthfeel. The taste is really pretty tart, mouth puckering sour. Nice notes of lemon zest, oak, earth, along with some some acetone. Ends pretty dryly. Really glad I got to try this one.

Review #900! Thanks to eyebrews for helping me procure this one. Bottle #05063 of the 1999 vintage. Shared at Matt's lambic throwdown and served in a Goose Island Matilda glass.

A - Pours with a few wisps of carbonation that quickly settle to an incomplete ring. Hazy peach juice color. Looks oddly like Yellow Bus. I'd think this was unblended lambic if it didn't say Gueuze on the label.

S - Sour! Insane, nostril-singing acidity. White wine vinegar, acetobacter, lemon, and light nail polish remover. There's some light funkiness and tart apple character as well.

T - Sweet Jesus this is sour - verging on barbaric levels. Sharp, intense sourness - sour apples, sour berries, sour grapes, sour sourness. Just hugely acetic, but somehow strangely compelling and somewhat addictive.

M - Super dry, extremely low carbonation, medium body, burns a hole in my stomach.

D - Considering how ridiculous this is, I continued to reach for my glass throughout the night and was sad to see the bottle empty on the counter, even with my innards melting at the same time. Still, I don't think this is the sort of gueuze I could share with my wife and expect to finish.

The blend is said to contain old stocks from Brouwerij De Neve, which closed in 1992.

Spotty lace around the edges of the glass, with ghostly wisps of skim across the top. I can see through the glass but its slighty hazy. Cork popped weakly, but there was visible carbonation.

Sharp acetic nose, tart crabapple and lemon with a deceptive soft cotton candy sweetness in the back. White wine vinegar traces.

Fruit is dominant, coupled with a caving acetic sourness that you acclimate to after the first few sips. Holding it on the tongue I notice some grape and more crabapple flavors. Definitely acetic, which some view as a flaw in traditional lambic, but here may be more a sign of age. The vinegar element is pleasant enough and unique in this case, though it seems to drown out any complexity it may have had. Fairly mellow, the sharp sourness keeps this one a sipper.

Not for the faint of heart, pack some Tums for this wild ride...

1999 vintage. Virtually still with an clear amber to golden hue. Smells like egg, solvent, musty wood, acid, and brett. I almost smell something like pencil erasers as well. Barely any carbonation which makes it very smooth to drink. The acidity doesn't stick to your throat. Although this is a very sour beer that you can feel travel down to your stomach. Very lactic with a light refreshing wheat malt and strong damp wood/brett. An interesting and impressive gueuze. A bit too sour for it's own good though.

A: Pours a nice light golden hue that is a bit cloudy. Small head with light retention and no lace.

S: Aromas of light funky cheese, vinegar, subtle citrus and hints of dark berry.

T: Nice sour punch right from the start. Hints of sour peach and apricot. Tart citrus with mild vinegar and funky cheese.

M: Nice zippy carbonation. Crisp, a bit dry, tasty.

'99 vintage generously shared by Craig, Chad, and Jeff. Thank you, guys.

Hazy orange-amber in the glass. The body is slightly turbid and there's little head from a hard pour. Carbonation is low. It smells of sharp lactic and acetic acid, sour cream, damp wood, musty cellar and apricot. The taste is brutally sour, possibly the most stomach-churning, mouth-puckering beer I've tried; it's like a cocktail of apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. The finish is slightly woody, but mostly just aggressively sour and slightly burning. Interesting stuff, a novelty to drink, but lacking subtlety and drinkability.
