On-tap at the Downtown Dane for my housemate's birthday on Halloween night. What better day to drink a pumpkin ale.

Pour: a vibrant orange-amber, crystal clear, under a finger of khaki foam that subsides to a spotty skim. Minimal lacing.

Nose: fresh-baked pumpkin pie. Amazingly authentic pie spices provide great aromatics overlying subtle pumpkin and caramels.

Taste: just like Thanksgiving. Clove, nutmeg and cinnamon, fresh from the grinder, light squashy pumpkin notes, and rich caramel and roasted toffee malts with a hearty and lingering grain finish.

Feel: a little thin, but far from watery, crisp carbonation

Drinkability/Overall: Takes the crown from Dogfish Head's Punkin' Ale for the best of the style for me. Authentic spices that don't overpower combined with that rich malty/grainy backbone make this a great beer. Catch it while you can.

In a becker pint glass.

The body is a clear, golden-orange with a white cap that dies quickly to a ring.

Nose is pretty light, I get some bready malt and just a hint of nutmeg, not much else,

This one comes out earthy with pumpkin meat in the middle of the drink, and graham crackery on the finish. The over riding flavors are the earthy hops and mineral water though.

The beer sits lighter in the mouth, but has a decent creaminess.

This pumpkin is pretty average overall. The spicing is light and leaves much to be desired.

From 11/02/12 notes. On tap at the downtown location, served in a pint glass.

a - Pours a clear orange copper color with one inch of white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of pumpkin, lightly sour bread or dough, cinnamon, nutmeg, toasted amtls, spices, and gingerbread. Not bad but there was the slightest twinge of sour dough which seemed a bit off. Still good though.

t - Taste is even better. Tastes of pumpkin, cinnamon, gingerbread, dough, bready malts, toasted malts, pepper, spices, and marshmellow. Very nice taste.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink beer.

o - Overall a good pumpkin beer; probably my second favorite of their beers I tried behind the Abrikoos, their apricot beer. Worth checking out if you like the style.

I had this one on tap at the downtown Madison Great Dane on 11/28/2008.

A= This ale poured a clear dark orange color with a 1/2" light tan head. The head quickly dropped to zero and only left a few spots of lace on my glass.

S= Dominated by the pumpkin pie spices, but the aromas of the underlying ale did find their way through to show sweet and carmelly malts and a bit of biscuit.

T= Very much the taste version of the aromas. Lots of pumpkin pie spice (nutmeg + cinnamon and clove) followed by all the flavors you would associate with a carmel-malty mild ale. Light esters, faint cooked pumpkin, slightly dry finish.

MF= On the thin side of medium bodied with a crisp carbonation level. Nice palate cleansing ability.

D= I am a fan of certain beers in the style, and I have to say this is about equal to DFH Punkin but not quite as good as ST Pumking. That said, it is very drinkable and sessionable and I would gladly have it again.

Finally a pumpkin ale that tastes like pumpkin ale should.

The Dane's pumpkin ale tastes like regular ale that happens to be made from a pumpkin with just a hint of fall spices.

I find that most pumpkin ales suffer from one of two problems. They either smell/taste like super rotten, overly sweet fruit/pumpkins or they are overly spiced, tasting more like fermented clovey-cinnamon water than beer.

The Dane’s ale strikes the perfect balance as far as taste is concerned.

The Mouthfeel is a touch on the light, undercreamy side and the aromas could be a little bolder in the spice department.

The appearance could be more orange but is generally pretty good.

Very drinkable for a pumpkin ale. Generally, I find most beers like this to be absolutely undrinkable so giving this a 4 means something.
