Brewed with liquorice. The recipe was developed during the 70's at the Urban brewery in Aalborg. Thisted bought the name, and the production restarted in 1997.

Poured from the bottle into a stemless wine glass. From notes. Best before April 2 2015.

Deep dark walnut brown body, some cola like carbonation a bit too. Creamy two finger and tan swiss cheese like head, with some faint clump like lacing. Looks decent.

Nice bouquet with an interesting porter angle. Hints of leafy tobacco and mild chocolate, with a mild sense of licorice as well.

Palate comes out nicely but more toned down and simple than the nose indicates. Mild roasted quality and strangely some caramel hints. Fruity esters a bit with a bit of sticky sensations but the licorice quality seems to come out a bit more toned down. Slightly watery feel on the palate with mild carbonation

A decent brew with a solid porter character but seems to be hard to discern style or one that seems distinct.

I’m not sure what a double brown stout is but I agree that it’s a Porter and a decent one at that.

Dark brown where light only passes the edge of the glass. Beige head which leaves a small web of lace.

Unsweetened cocoa smell. Black patent malt nose in the background. Creamy.

The taste is dryer and more bitter than the smell suggests. Mostly semisweet chocolate with a touch of mocha. Decent body with a lower carbonation level. The finish and aftertaste is mostly the mocha.

An excellent and unique Baltic Porter. Pours out caramel brown, but sits in my glass with a massive cocoa head on an impenetrable black body. The head lasts throughout, leaving lace in its wake. The smell is a mix of dark chocolate and roasty, rich malt that has hints ripe pitted dates. It is medium bodied, softly carbonated and smooth. The taste combines bitterness, some char, anise and a mild smokiness that makes this BP somewhat unique. The moderately bitter finish fades nicely into a drying, dark chocolate and black licorice flavor that kept me reaching back for more. I enjoyed this tasty brew from a 32oz. crowler, poured from a fresh keg, and thoroughly enjoyed every ounce. It may be more bitter than more traditional Baltic Porters, but as a fan of black licorice, I really enjoyed this one.

Limfjords Porter from Thisted Bryghus. Purchased 10/20/20 for $6.35 (Including tax) for 16.9 oz bottle ($ 0.376/oz) from Shangy’s in Emmaus, PA. Reviewed 11/26/20.
Rear label marked “Lot Number 23022015” so is this really a five-year-old Baltic porter? On room temperature shelf at store and stored at home at 42 degrees. Served at 50.5 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 55.0 degrees.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Amber brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. When held to direct light, same.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.5 cm, aggressive center pour), desert sand, high density, and fizzy, average retention, diminishing to a four mm crown fed in several places by effervescence and having three 1.5 cm hills and a thin rocky cap. Second pour produces a tight 1.3 cm head.
Lacing – Very good. Wide irregular band of barely distinguishable extremely tiny bubbles.
Aroma –3.75 – Weak roasted malt and some milk chocolate, no hops, no yeast. Lasts but weakens still more.
Flavor – 4 – Begins slightly sweet with a light milk chocolate-like flavor and weak roasted malt, no hops, no yeast. Ends the same with a little bitterness. No alcohol (7.9 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma, although a slight gastric warming does occur. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Medium, slightly creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 A decent Baltic porter, even more so if it is really five years old.

Bottle lot says 23022015. So...February 23rd 2015?

It pours a pitch black, a finger of tan foam with the pour. A slow shrinking head of foam. Lacing is outstanding.

The smell is awesome. Roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, light hints of the licorice, which I expected from a +5 year old beer that includes that taste. I reckon that it was the first to go.

Almost drinks like a dry export Stout except it does have some sweetness to it despite it being on the dry side.

Lovely roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate. Very little if any licorice detected to my palate. Alcohol is a non factor.

On the high end of medium bodied, carbonation seems to be on the gentler side.

To me, this is exceptional. I will buy more!

This one pours a very dark black, with a dense head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like very herbal licorice, smoke, roasted malt, dark chocolate, and pine.

This is super old school and rustic in the best way. I don't even like licorice all that much, and I can dig this one. The licorice is herbal and slightly bitter, and melds with the dark bitter chocolate flavors, ash, smoke, Cola, and dried dark fruit. There's not a ton of sweetness here, but it never gets all that bitter.

This is medium bodied, not super thick, but definitely creamy. It's very drinkable, with a dry finish that asks for another sip immediately. It certainly feels European in execution.

This is really excellent. It's a great and raw take on the style, and one of the best of the style I've ever had.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear extremely dark brown approaching jet black in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and faint dark cola brown colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense foamy dark tan head that slowly reduces to a medium to large sized patch of medium thick film surrounded by a large patch of very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of dark roasted malts + smoked malts with minimal amounts of sweetness as well as moderate aromas of licorice/anise and light aromas of earthy + spicy hops.

T: Upfront there are slightly stronger than moderate flavors of dark roasted malts + dark malts + smoked malts with minimal amounts of sweetness. That is followed by hints of dark chocolate + coffee as well as light to moderate flavors of licorice/anise. Finally there are light flavors of earthy + spicy hops. Moderate amounts of roasty bitterness which slowly fades away leaving a lingering smoked malt flavor.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol. Lots of complexity to the flavor and aroma to this beer makes it quite interesting and enjoyable.

Draft at Churchkey. Inky black with a one finger creamy beige head. Aroma seems on the money toasty, while the taste brings some smokey, ashy flavors, dark chocolate. Super smooth, lingering bitterness with a bit of heat.

Poured from fridge temp. Color is jet black - really attractive. Smell is wonderful licorice, roasted malt, and some subtle smoky notes. Taste is tobacco, chocolate, licorice, and some really nice dark fruit. This beer is nicely balanced but still complex. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Overall, this is a really great beer.
