a real unique take on the style here. it looks alright, maybe a little thin in body and short on head, not quite as decadent and dreamy as the best ones look, but certainly nothing wrong with it in my wine glass. the nose is what gets interesting. it really smells like fresh canned blueberry jam, true and through, its insane how the dark fruit rises above the roast of the barley and the sweetness of the oats. eyes closed i would think i am smelling blueberry pie or jam, or that stuff they put on your belgian waffle at dennys. flavors i am not used to in a stout for sure, the taste is just like the nose, but i get the stout part too this time. it is indeed a little thin, lacking on the oat richness, but this curious blueberry thing more than makes up for it in terms of the overall enjoyment of the brew. havent had much from browns, so this is a pretty inspiring first impression. more body would make this, its a little too slick as it is, and could dry out just a touch, but a really solid beer, different because of the berry element. i really liked this.

Poured into a pint glass.

A- Pours what I suppose is technically a very dark brown because of the ruby red highlights coming through the bottom of the glass. Has tan one finger head that does not linger for long and leaves a bit of lacing as it dissipates. Carbonation is evident from some bubbles streaming to the top. Wish the head was a bit creamier but looks pretty nice nonetheless. (3.5)

S- Milk chocolate and dark fruits such as raisins come through. A bit of roasted malt and also a caramel/toffee quality. Perhaps a slight English hop character but it's difficult to tell with the presence of the very nice chocolate and dark fruit notes. Subdued but pleasant. (3.75)

T- The milk chocolate and dark fruit character is most evident to start and they marry quite nicely. The caramel/toffee comes through as the finish begins and the finish brings with it an earthy hop bitterness. The roasted malt is evident pretty much throughout. Not quite as refined as the nose but nice. (3.5)

M- This is where the oats are evident as the mouthfeel has that trademark silkiness associated with the style. It does not finish especially dry and it lingers for a bit, which I find to be very pleasing. I find the level of carbonation to be a little harsh and it intrudes to on the silkiness. (3.4)

O- A decent oatmeal stout that I was happy to pick up as it's brew only a few hours away. I really thought that the nose was great, and if the rest of the beer could rise to that level this would be nearing a must-have. (3.55)

New brewery started showing up around here, figured I'd give it a try.

Pours a light fizzy brown head that fades fairly quickly, super dark molasses brown color very little light getting through.

Nose brings plenty of brown malts, toasty and biscuity, little creamy brown malt note, some caramel, toffee, and quite nutty, hint of cocoa and dried lactose and some oatmeal.

Taste brings more toasty brown malts, quite biscuity and nutty, some caramel and toffee again but not really sweet just a little, into creamy oats again and dried lactose, with a touch of cocoa dust. Some roasty flavors start to come through more as it warms, it actually gets a nice roasty flavor. Faint hop bitterness in the background. Finish is dry and a bit of a dried lactose feel, touch of cocoa and creamy brown malts, more biscuit and toffee notes, and a bit more bitterness with hint of earthy hop note, lingering oatmeal note.

Mouth is med bod, fairly creamy and a decent oatmeal viscous feel, nice carb.

Overall pretty good, nothing too special, a bit on the light side as far as malts go for an oatmeal stout, at least what I'm used to, but still pretty decent beer. That being said, Sam Smith is much better from what I remember of an English Oatmeal Stout.

Bottle to Tulip.

A - Dark brown, almost black pour. Little to none, light brown head. What little head it did have dissipated very quickly. Looks relatively smooth, nothing chewy or viscous about the appearance.

S - Oatmeal. Lots of oatmeal. Light burnt notes. Caramel on the back end.

T - Caramel up front. Following up with oatmeal. Almost overpowering at times. Some burnt, toasted characteristics also.

M - Light carbonation. Decent. On par with what I expected. Thin.

O - It's an okay stout. Could be a okay substitute to missing out on your old stand-by but it's nothing to call home about. Not what I had hoped for in an oatmeal stout.
