A big bastard of an award winning brew. Exceptionally smooth with rich maltiness & a touch of smoky peat character.

Location: Bremerton, WA
Style: Scotch Ale

I am drinking Magnificent Bastard today using a tulip glass. I served it at 46 degrees. The pour created a foamy, frothy, two-fingered, light tan head with below-average retention. The color is brown, with reddish hues, charting around S.R.M. 26. The beer is opaque. The slow dissipation left lacing on the glass. The appearance is average for this style.
The initial aromas are caramel, bready, phenolic, and peat. Swirling the glass again, I smell floral, butterscotch, dried cherries, smoke, a light char, herbal, earthy, and dark roasted malts.
The flavors are caramel, peat, smoke, phenolic, floral, dried cherries, molasses, light char, earthy, herbal, and dark roasted malts,
The mouthfeel is slightly astringent, finishing somewhat tannic. The body is medium, and the carbonation is medium-low.
I have had this beer fresh, and I was not a fan. The beer had more astringency and more tannic. I held on to this beer for the last two years; the aging helped, but not in a good way. The scotch ale is so-so. I would not re-visit.

12 oz can dated 12/7/20 poured into a Teku on 12/24/20.
Pours a 1" light tan head. Opaque chocolate, hazelnut color. A little lacing.
Aromas of toffee, caramel, booze, and a subtle hint of smoke.
Tastes like caramel sweetness, cola, and toffee, with a slight bitterness in the finish. The alcohol is subdued. Slightly skunky aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is very smooth and medium-bodied. Astringent and moderately carbonated.
Overall, this is an excellent scotch ale. There is a complex malt profile with a subtle peat quality. It's a great value when found as a six-pack, but well worth the higher price for the 20oz bomber.

Light, off white head. Lovely, clear and deep auburn color. Aroma toast & caramel with hints of allspice and molasses. Flavor is of the above in a subtle blended version of them with a hint of sweetness. Medium heavy body with a real good caramelized malt and tiny hop bite finish.

Bottle purchased at Costco April 2019. Dateless bottle with "19064" stamped.
Look: Deep brown mahogany, creamy thick head and rising carbonation.
Smell: Hint of boozyness, barrel, toffee sweetness, caramel, and rustic woody smoke.
Taste: Roasted caramelized malt, delicious wee heavy, no bitterness and not overpoweringly sweet.
Feel: Silky, slightly numbing with no heat.
Overall: I really enjoyed this beer without having much experience in the style. Would buy again if I had the chance.

$ 10.70 (Including shipping)/capped bomber ($ 0.486/oz) from Tavour, Seattle, WA.
Undated bottle except possibly for the “18064” stamped twice on the label. Stored at 42 degrees prior to consumption and served at 55 degrees in a hand-washed and hand-dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 4.
Body – Dark brown, opaque. When held to the light, red-amber and clear.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.6 cm, aggressive center pour), tan with a yellow tint, medium density, average retention, diminishing to a three to four mm ring and a rocky partial layer.
Lacing – None.
First pour – Brown, clear.
Aroma – 4 – Malt and a bit of peaty smokiness – very nice.
Flavor – 4 – A very subdued beginning with a hint of sweet malt and a bit of smoke wafting by. There might even be a hint of diacetyl with the malt. The smokiness caresses both the hard and soft palates, reminiscent of a good scotch whisky, well-balanced and delicious. The alcohol content (9.2% ABV) is low enough not to be intrusive but high enough to produce a pleasing amount of gastric warming. The hops cut the sweetness just the right amount without making the aftertaste bitter. No dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.5 - Medium, creamy, lively carbonation.
Impression and summation – 4.25 – The appearance, while lacking any lacing, is still very acceptable. The slight peaty smokiness balances the sweet malt well. The flavors are not overpowering but instead are well-blended and well-balanced to produce an excellent Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy. Even the palate is above average with this brew. The price point, while not effecting my review, is also non-offensive, even for a bomber. I wish that I had purchased a case of this.
