Aged in single-use Kentucky Bourbon barrels, Bourbon Barrel Magnificent Bastard includes dimensions of warming bourbon and wood. Subtle layers of smoke and vanilla waft to the nose, while the rich maltiness bonds with the oak and whiskey for an experience worth sharing.

Body pours a deep smokey brown... like dark leather with a faintly ruddy twinge to it. Decent sized finger or two head that features pillowy almond meat bubbles.
Nose is thinner with sweet and peaty malts. Some raisins and smoothe barreling.
Sweeter and fruitier than I expected. The core seems to be almost sweet green apple wrapped in some leather and peat, instead of the raisins and tobacco I was more expecting. Definitely greener than anticipated in general.
Dry finish and the follow through is my favourite part of this one so far.
Gotta admit, I'm pretty underwhelmed here. It's not bad by any means, just not what I was anticipating, both in terms of how it presents itself (flavours etc) as well as I had built up high expectations that I didn't feel were met.

$ 18.70 (Including shipping)/capped 500mL bottle ($ 1.107/oz) from Tavour, Seattle, WA.
Undated bottle except for the “2018” on the cap cover. Stored at 42 degrees prior to consumption and served at 55 degrees in a hand-washed and hand-dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 4.
Body – Dark brown, opaque, some effervescence. When held to the light, there is penetration of the top cm, making it amber and murky.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.5 cm, controlled center pour), light tan, initially fizzy but stabilizing to a high-density finish, average retention, diminishing to an irregular four to eight mm ring fed by effervescence and a complete rocky layer.
Lacing – Almost none. A couple of wee islands bashfully appear.
First pour – Light amber, clear.
Aroma – 3.5 - Malty and slightly smokey but less smokey than typical rauchbiers.
Flavor – 3 - Initially slightly sweet but this sweetness intensifies on the soft palate. Smokey maltiness. No bourbon in either aroma or taste. A bit of oak, I think, but is it there or is it merely imagined after reading the label. Either way, it’s quite weak. No alcohol, no hops, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3 – Medium, almost syrupy, soft carbonation.
Impression and summation – 3 – A cloying mistake. I’ve said it before and I’ll repeat it here – aging in bourbon barrels is not appropriate for all beer styles. Scotch ale/wee heavy is, IMHO, an inappropriate style although the brewer’s opinion obviously differs. What was it Scotty on Star Trek said – “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me”. There won’t be a second time.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a medium to dark orange-red with a thin khaki head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of caramel and biscuit malt, fresh and dried plums, dates, oak, bourbon and light peat. Flavor follows with dark dried fruit, plums, dates, oaky vanilla, bourbon and light woody peat. Lingering evenly flavored dark fruit and bourbon barrel. Medium bodied with light creaminess and sharp carbonation. A very nice Scotch ale that is surprisingly well balanced for a barreled ale, everything is in fine harmony. The dark fruit notes and malt are spot on for the style, the bourbon is present, but does not dominate. My only regret was I'd like a more robust peat element, which can be fairly strong for my taste in this style. But that being said, this is an ale that shows harmonious balance and flavor. Nicely done. I enjoyed the base Scotch ale many, many years ago and am glad to see it represented here in this nice barreled version.
