Style: American Amber / Red Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.70%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Dream Machine, an India Pale Lager or IPL, is a melding of varied visions of an India Pale Ale and an Amber Lager. Once poured, its light copper color delights the eyes and a citrusy hop aroma flows through the nose. Upon first sip, a smooth hop bitterness reveals itself – fresh, bold and slightly spicy – before subtle hints of mild maltiness appear. A big hop bite and a crisp, clean lager finish combine for a beautifully balanced beer. Take Dream Machine for a spin and let your reverie begin.

I was surprised to see this on shelves. I haven't been keeping up with Magic Hat.

Pours a nice reddish-gold with a frothy head into my glass.

A good balance of citrus, especially grapefruit in the nose. There's also a grainy texture to the malt.

Lots of conflicting tastes upfront. First of all, you have citrusy, grassy hops competing fiercely against the buttery, grainy malt bill. The result is a jumbled mess in the mouth.

This carries over to the mouthfeel as well. It's just not very pleasant. The high level of carbonation makes it almost unbearable.

I'm not sure how Magic Hat let such a weak, miserable example of this style out of their tanks. I have had several other examples that kick the ass of this pathetic shit, such as Brewmaster Mike's Citra Mantra (represent!).

12 oz poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a pretty, golden copper color with orange highlights and a finger and a half of white-colored head that slowly dissolved away into a not-thin and not-thick lacing of foam that completely covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very nice aromas of piney, citrusy hops and bready, biscuit toasted malt, as well as some caramel, black pepper, a touch of coriander and clover.

Taste: Wow, really nice beer. Lots of piney, floral, citrusy hops up front, followed immediately by some caramel-like sweetness and finished with a lot of bready, toasted malt and a touch of brown sugar-like sweetness. Tasty.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, creamy and slightly effervescent. With an ABV of 5.7%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: Wow, what a really nice beer. I wasn’t sure what to expect, never having tasted an IPL, but this is really nice. There’s a good balance between the hops and the malt. Recommended.

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Thin lacing on top of a pale amber brew, smells of grapefruit and melon rind with some graininess. Smooth and crisp but the body lends some slickness to the palate. Lots of hop character though this drinks more like an IPA than a lager, hoppiness doesn't fully mesh with the maltiness. Seems a bit disjointed. Not a bad sip bit could be cleaned up a bit for a lager.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Amber color with a thicker white head that lingered. Lots of carbonation. Medium lacing on the glass.

Smell: Hops and citrus, maybe some pine notes in the background.

Mouthfeel/Taste: A little rought medium bodied. Taste of bitter hops with a subtle sweet citrus on the after taste.

Overall: Not bad. I would have this one again.

Straw yellow colored with fine bubbles rising up to a white tightly bubbled head that recedes quickly. Aroma of creamed corn and cotton candy, floral notes. Flavors of honey malt, peppery spiciness, some burnt rubber offering sharp bitterness. Hops are subtle, somewhat floral and spicy. Mouthfeel is a bit slick, but finishes tingly. Overall an okay beer.
