Notes: Definitely not your typical IPA…this beer is over-the-top hopped. We've calculated the final bitterness to be a staggering 100 IBUs. Extremely bitter with a dark-golden body and a heady American hop aroma, the Big 100 IBU IPA is among the most bitter beers out there.

From the one pint can dated 04-16-18. Sampled on July 28, 2018.

It pours a murky looking medium amber underneath a large and lingering foamy white head. Some lacing adds to it.

This is an older can so although I get pine characters and maybe an herbal character in the aroma; I also pick up this melted caramel sweetness and some grainy alcohol.

The mouthfeel is medium and smooth.

The taste is only a letdown because of its age I think as I get a malt bomb musty sweetness with a little pine wrapping things up at the finish. Again, with the booze.

Huge surprise here. Magic Hat is an amazing local company here but I don't usually love their IPAs. This is a west coast-ish, pine and citrus heavy crusher. Incredible balance of malt and hop, much preferred this to the majority of local brews. I wish more vermont brewers would try this style on.

June 2017. Perfectly bitter. Love this imperial IPA. None of the unnecessary malty sweetness everyone seems to love. Just straight up hop flavor in an ale with excellent full bodied mouth feel, super carbonation and a golden hazy color.

Pours cloudy orange amber color with sediment floating around and a 1 finger head that dropped fast but then lingered at like a quarter inch head level, dissipating very slowly after that, leaving decent spotty lacing.

Smells of orange peel, grapefruit, mango, toffee, roasted grains, brown sugar, citrus hops, souring tropical fruit that browned, fruity candy, light floral hops and rich caramelized malts. The hops hit first then the sugary malts take over in an English IPA manner.

Tastes more like a heavily malted ESB or strong ale than DIPA. The 100 IBU's can't stop this from being cloyingly sweet, as it seems too many hops were used and it over fermented and turned sugary while keeping a high bitterness. Like the nose this is a combo of grapefruit, mango, toffee, roasted grains, brown sugar, caramelized malts, fruity candy, light floral hops, maple syrup, tangerine, orange and then booze like dark rum. The 9% ABV is always evident and the citrus sweetness come off as tart at times. Too extreme, they need to dial down the hops used and adjust this for better flavor.

16oz can poured into a tulip. Pours golden with a subtle haze; fluffy white head that slowly falls leaving great retention and sticky lacing. The aromas are full of bread and citrus. Lots of orange and caramel. Malts are definitely there. The flavors seem to follow the nose. Strong malt backbone. Lots of caramel. Lots of orange peel along with hints of grapefruit. Some fresh grass is in the mix as well. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is full-bodied with moderate to lower carbonation. It's very creamy and fluffy. Smooth and dangerously drinkable.

I'm assuming this isn't at its freshest, but it's still enjoyable. It's ultimately nothing too crazy though.

Poured from a pint can into a Duvel glass.

Pours a Amber-Orange color with an inch and a half frothy head that does stick around long as expected.

Strong resiny hops pop out of the glass. Waves of malt with a touch of orange zest. Pretty nice.

Tastes like a hefty clash of bittering hops and rich malts. Id nit all to a beer I have had in the past but can't remember which one. Finishes quite dry.

Good mouthfeel for such a big beer. Definitely a sipper.

This is a good offering from a brewery that has not impressed me in the past. Nothing I would seek out do to the heavy malt bill but still enjoyable. Glad I tried it.

Haven't had a Magic Hat beer in a few years. Got this one as a single. Big Hundo has big flavors. First of all, very cloudy with a huge white head. Smells a little tricky. I get some hop pungency but I can't quite identify the aromas overall. Taste is nice! Plenty bitter, with 100 IBUs. I get some candied fruit taste here. Overall, a really tasty DIPA from Magic Hat. Nice!

Poured from a 16oz can into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color with a medium off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thick but spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains strong floral hops, fruity citrus and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out with a strong burst of grassy hops bitterness that remains dominant. Then some citrus and caramel sweetness comes in. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy and brings a decent balance. The after-taste is hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, good representation of style, this is a solid 2IPA to drink for a while.

-can poured into a spiegelau ipa glass.

A: An explosive rage of effervesce within a hazy, dirty orange body. An impressive 2 inch bone white head mushrooms and protrudes above the rim with ease holding its own. Large soapy pockets line the outside of the vessel. Great retention ave lacing.

S: Tropical nose, pineapple-orange, fresh wet nature, moderate awareness, short duration. Green corn ears, some hay on the finish.

T: Stale orange like flavoring, lime, spritzy nature, guava with a fruity and citrusy like flavor. Soda syrup sweetness, sweet flashes of malt, wet spruce and wet lemon. Sweet dry fruitiness and alcohol warming on the finish.

M: Sticky mouthful, lightly syrupy feel, generally good carbonation that has settled a bit from first open. Alcohol fruity pop citrus warmth from the 9.0%.

O: A really odd flavor that is hard to pinpoint at times. A reported 100 ibus that is more flavor focused then bittering. Sweet toffee and fruity natue, unique, sweet glow of fruity pop alcohol, with an 85 rating justified for at least a try. Drinks much better slightly chilled rather warming up dulls up.

No label information. Big Hundo IPA is brewed in the style of an American Double / Imperial IPA, available in 22 oz. bottles.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a tulip glass.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy, crisp head of a buttery white color over a densely hazy amber body with ample, lively carbonation and thin, clouded sediment. Retention is good and lacing is light and spotty. 3.75

(Smell) Citrus, tropical fruit and pine hop aromas forward with a potent bitterness. Grapefruit zest, lemongrass and light pineapple juice. Clean and light malt aromas of lightly toasted crystal syrups and caramel malts, light breadiness and modest body. Potency is medium. 3.75

(Taste) Toasted caramel grains and syrup forward, finishing with a lingering bitterness of citrus, pithy lemon and grapefruit peel, edging a bit closer to the more brash, less juicy side of tropical hop characters, albeit with a nicely bitter backbone, expected per the style. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, lightly residual, mildly grainy, medium dry. Carbonation is moderate, generating a lightly crisp finish and a moderate frothiness. Body is medium for the style, medium+ against all beers. Balance is mildly hoppy bitter over sweet. Alcohol presence is moderate and there are no off characters. 3.75

(Overall) Arguably one of the finer creations of Magic Hat, this isn't a half-bad DIPA, but the hop presentation falls somewhat short, with not quite enough of a full spectrum of citrus and tropical fruit flavors coming through, and there isn't quite as much of an alcohol mask on this beer as one may hope for, dragging down drinkability a bit. Consider this one of Magic Hat's most worthy efforts of your time, but it doesn't quite match the execution of more gracefully hopped and balanced craft DIPAs. 3.75

16 oz can poured into a DFH snifter.

Pours a hazy orange color with a finger of sticky off white foam. Aroma is quite hoppy, with tons of tropical fruit, pineapple, and sweet citrus. Flavor is extreme hoppiness, with a huge bitter finish. But there is enough sweetness to round things out just enough. Bursting with hop flavors, as your palate adjusts to the extreme bitterness, this beer really starts to shine.

I'm really enjoying this one. Been a while since I've had an over the top IIPA, and this beer delivers in spades. Nice sweetness that cuts the bitterness, but still crazy bitter.

16 oz can into 16 oz tulip. A- wonderful burnt orange w 1 finger head that dissipates to a soapy sheen. S- sweet malts, tangerine and pine. T- follows the nose w malt up front and finishes with bitter pine that lingers. As it warmed it completely changed to All tangerine up front and middle to a piney finish! Pleasantly surprised w this one from Magic H. Since I find there beers not that amazing. Try it if you see it, I would drink it again no problem!

Zero complaints about this beer. We just had Enjoy By, Ruination 2.0, Illumination, and Double Trouble all pass through the area, and I picked up a bottle of this. Holds it's ground against the big boys.

Pale amber/deep gold color, fluffy head left some spatter down the glass; lots of bitter pine resin and hoppy citric pith are sweetened by pale malt caramel... Medium on the tongue, little bit of stick and a nice wash of bitterness - the juiciness and fruitiness are perfectly complementary to the bitter hops, Simcoe and Apollo.

S: pine, pine, and more pine;

T: floral and caramel up front; bitterness comes in strong by mid-palate and stays though the long finish; all pine from mid-palate on;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation;

O; this is a BITTER beer (and I love it);

16oz can, sample from the brewery.

Great looking lacing, mild haze but the golden hue is stunning. Lots of rind and zest in the nose and on the palate. Bitterness is nearly too much, the boating of 100+ IBUs is spot on. A sipper, pretty drinkable ... slow to put back but nothing cumbersome of the palate. Enjoyable but sort of a one and done. If you are into mixing beers this is a great base to mix with other IPAs.

It is a good beer, but not compared to the other Burlington-area Imperial/Double IPAs. I feel like the bitterness is a gimmick so Magic Hat can enter the ring with Fiddlehead, Heady, 14th Star, etc., complete with the pint-can, but without having to really go head-to-head, as the product is so different.

A head-to-head with any of those beers would go terribly badly for Big Hundo.

Bomber bottle, decent value at $8.99 at Peekskill, N Y - Beer and soda

Pours hazed lighter amber, nice, tight fine bubble head, film and moderate lacing left on the glass.

Citric hop nose.

Quite tasty DIPA, with waves of citrus, grapefruit, honey, lime, mango and assorted tropical fruits....better then the typical offering from Magic Hat...worth a try

I purchased this at Wegmans for around $8 for a 22oz, enoyed chilled in an IPA glass.

The color is light golden apricot with mild haze and thick white head with very fine bead and lace sticks in a film with retention that is very good. The smell is piney with a tropical and mild grapefruit scent with aroma of high alpha acid hops and herbal/dank smell with mildly fruity yeast ester. The feel is moderately bitter on entry with spicy texture and medium high carbonation which adds levity with mild sweetness and low astringency with alcohol apparent in the semi-dry finish.

The taste starts with tangy fruit and slight spice from the hops with pine-like hop taste mixed with grapefruit hop flavor followed by a mild malt sweetness and light taste of alcohol mid palate. The fruity yeast is noticeable in the finish with a woody accent with mostly dry taste. This is a pretty decent Imperial IPA well above expectations since the HiPA while decent is not nearly as good as this mostly simcoe flavored imperial IPA.

This one is deceptive and could be dangerous. Right from the start, there is a nice hoppy spiced fruit aroma that follows into the flavor. I was expecting full blown bitterness all the way through yet that creeps up in the aftertaste making you immediately thirsty for more. The danger comes from the abv(9%) because I can easily see drinking a few. Nice surprise.

Slightly hazed apricot color with tight bubbles rising up quickly to a thick head of orangey beige foam that slowly recedes to a soapy cap. Aroma of ripe stone fruit, alcohol vapors, and citrus peel. Hoppy flavors upfront, orange rind pith, tangerine, and piney bitters. Not overly bitter upfront, I expected more from 100 IBU's, but much bitterness does emerge in the finish. Alcohol strength warms the cheeks. Subtle honey malt rides beneath, but the hops push it back down. Clean and dry mouthfeel, tingly finish on the tongue and cheeks. Not picking up the house ringwood yeast flavors, maybe this one uses a different yeast. Good beer.

A: The beer is relatively clear amber yellow in color and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of caramel malts and citrusy hops are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, having flavors of citrusy hops and notes of caramel malts along with hints of alcohol in the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: Compared to the top examples of this style, the beer doesn't have dominant aromas of flavors of citrusy hops and doesn't do a good job at masking its alcohol.

S: Citrusy with hints of pine and grass. Some maltiness in there to balance. Slight yeasty notes as well

T: Starts off with a bit of citrusy hops which get nicely balanced by the maltiness. Some grassy and pine notes come through as well. Bitterness lasts throughout. Alcohol comes along for the ride. Finishes with more of the citrus notes as well as some maltiness and more lingering bitterness

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Lightly slick

O: I'm actually surprisingly impressed with this. Some nice hoppiness up front along with a nice balancing maltiness that gets hit with a big dose of pleasant bitterness. Alcohol well hidden but still adds some dimension to the beer. The bitterness and abv do make this a bit of a sipper and limit the drinkability a bit, but it's still nice for a glass or 2. Worth trying if you're into those bitter bombs
