A mysteriously good India Pale Ale with citrus and piney hop notes, balanced by #9’s signature sweetness.

Poured from a 12 oz can, formed a 1” head, was light honey color and had a very subtle fruity syrup aroma. The beer was smooth but with a noticeable fruity syrupy taste. A good beer but too syrupy for my liking.

Starts out okay, nice light piney/mango smell. ....The flavors just don’t mesh for me. The fruit and hops don’t complement each other well, leaves a flat cough syrupy tasting finish.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, 6/23/2017. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep golden amber/light orange color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with amazing retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big juicy apricots, peach, tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, citrus peel/rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted bread, light caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of apricots, citrus/pine/earthy hops, and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big juicy apricots, peach, tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, citrus peel/rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted bread, light caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of apricots, peach, tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, citrus peel/rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Nice complexity, robustness, and balance of apricots, citrus/pine/earthy hops, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance. Bit of increasing hop astringency through the glass, but not overwhelming. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy/sticky, and fairly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 5.9%. Overall this is a nice fruited IPA. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of apricots, citrus/pine/earthy hops, and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink, despite the increasingly bitter/resinous/drying finish, not overly aggressive. Very well balanced between juicy apricots and citrus/dank/earthy hop complexity; nice bready malt backbone, with no residual sweetness. A nicely enjoyable and unique offering.

Undrinkable for me. Tasted like soap.

I keep coming across these oddball loosey-goosey bottles in the singles coolers at my local bottle shops & I cannot help but be curious as to what they are like. Sometimes they simply help to round out a mixed-sixer, other times, I find a diamond in the rough. Hey, for a low price, I will drink anything once.
From the bottle: "Hi-#9 is a concoction created by visitors of our Brewery & Artifactory who sought the signature sweetness of #9, but with the bitter punch of an IPA. Here is Hi-#9 in all its glory: a mysteriously great IPA with citrus hop notes, balanced by a subtly sweet yet dry finish."; "A bittersweet blend."
I Pop!ped the cap & began a slow, gentle pour into the awaiting glass. It foamed up all on its own, forming three-plus fingers of dense, rocky, eggshell-white head with good retention that left behind a load of sticky lacing as it fell. Color was Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity and amber highlights. Nose smelled like a fruity AIPA in that it was definitely hoppy, but there was a sweet fruitiness cutting into the hoppy bitterness. Hmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste began with a citrusy-grapefruit bitterness, but then a subtle fruity sweetness began creeping into the mix. It had a jammy flavor, like some sort of preserves, but I could not quite put my finger on it. Peaches? Not quite that sweet. If it was #9, then it was apricots, but it has been so long since I have drank a #9 that I have forgotten what it tastes like. Finish was semi-dry, but the flavors struck me as being kind of jangly, not meshing as well as I might have liked. If this were a take it or leave it choice, I would leave it on the next time.
