Humble PatienceHumble Patience
Notes: The result of mystical exhortation and strange portents in the sky, Humble Patience was complex without being heavy...a marriage of many riches. An Irish-Style, deep-ruby Red Ale with tantalizing layers of flavor.

ST: 12oz poured into a pint glass. The bottle lists both the ABV and gives a drink by date.

A: Dark borwn-red with a fine red tint. It has a nice slightly tinged white head, but the retention is bad, and it leaves little lacing.

S: Sweet malt, smoke, and nuts.

T: Sweet biscuit malt, lots of nutty characteristics here, slight coffee, and a bit of oats.

M: Medium and smooth with good carbonation zing.

O: This beer comes along with the Magic Hat fall seasonal pack. It's nice nutty mellow flavor works very well for the fall. It has a nice carbonation bite, but it is still smooth and easy to drink. It is a pleasant drinking ale.

Presentation: On tap at Cambridge Commons (Cambridge, MA). Served in a "Humble Patience" English-style pint glass.

Appearance: Deep ruby red to brown with a 2-finger thick off-white nirto-creamy head that sticks to the glass.

Smell: Fairly clean nose with hop and fruit aromas. I swear I can pick up very faint anise & liquorice smells too.

Taste: First taste is that of any other nitro'd English/Irish-style ale (Caffery's comes to mind). Silky smooth mouthfeel with a light even sweetness, followed by lightly toasted malts, watery grape, earth, wood and more fruity characters. Roasted malt flavours fall in the corners of the palate. Bitterness is somewhat citrusy, but not overwhelming, smooth and well-rounded. It's also quite raw in texture (bitty) and consumes the palate in its uniqueness -- leafy coating throughout the mouth with a gentle astringency (if such a thing).

Notes: A very smooth and easy drinking ale. It's obvious that Magic Hat is going after the nitro UK import market, and this is a hell of a contender. The "Never Premature" slogan on the pint glass notes its slow pouring nitro birth.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

LOOK: Heady start, dark amber brown

SMELL: Toasted grain, diacetyl funk, burnt sugar, dried dates.

TASTE: Crisp, wet, loose body, toasted grain, modest hops, vague fruit, biscuity, faintly buttery, toffee, dry finish.

Not half bad, more than enough flavor to go around even though the malt character seems a bit light. The brewer keeps it interesting enough to keep on drinking.

(Bottled version) This is a staple in our house. Beautiful garnet red color. Biscuity/grainy flavors (mildly roasted) predominate, but don't dominate (?). Finishes dry. Unique interpretation of an Irish red, not unlike Old Nutfield Auburn.

don't bother with the bottled version (as it's just a repackaging of bob's 1st ale, which is good in its own right, but it's not truly humble patience) and go right for the nitro draft if it's available on tap. humble patience pours with a creamy head and a dark brown appearance that is a bit misleading. there's nothing heavy about this beer. it's roasted malt flavoring is smooth all the way down. an excellent session beer.

The first Magic Hat so far that has not impressed me. Malt is a bit bland, some astringency and smoke at the same time, which was not a good combination. As a red ale, it lacked assertiveness - just sort of cruised along without making much of a statement.

When i first tried this I was extemely disapointed because this was just Bob's first renamed and repackaged. But having tried this nitro'd on tap I'd have to say it is a little different. The head is, of course, thicker and creamier like all nitro'd beers but it seems to add a satiny mouthfeel through out the whole beer. It still has the same flavours as it did when it was called Bob's first but it is better to look at and more interesting to drink. I do disagree with them claiming that this is the way Bob ment the beer to be.
