Notes: Based on an English style brown with a decidedly American Twist. A medium body carries flavors of biscuit and caramel while a distinct hop bitterness prevails in the finish.

Bottle from Harvest Market
Crystal clear amber/brown color with a smallish off white head that dissipates slowly. Caramel malt earthy pine hop light fruit, cardboard and toffee with a touch of alcohol. Middle of the road. Nothing horrible and nothing exciting.

DATE TASTED: December 20, 2015... GLASSWARE: Barley Creek pint...OCCASION: a second beer to welcome the official start of winter in a day or two... APPEARANCE: mahogany brown body that allows light through; thick, slightly chunky head is off-white and strong, remaining at two-thirds of a finger with coral lacing above--an attractive pint, no doubt... AROMA: elusive bouquet, with baker's sugars, heavy malts and toasted with little to no hops to speak of; some nuttiness and woody notes... PALATE: thick, medium-bodied, warming and intermittently creamy; astringency on the back end subtracts, but the overall effect beckons another...TASTE: nuts--peanut, pecan--are front and center...light lemon, sugary bitterness, and syrupy sweetness (chocolate? licorice?) challenge for consideration against a toasted malty backbone...OVERALL: another slightly off-center beer from Magic Hat that doesn't seem to have such a winning distinction in its LOOKS like a beer you want to enjoy in the winter; it tastes like a beer from a sampler that might be forgotten...

Pours a light fizzy tan bubbly head that fades at a med pace, 1/2 finger, with touches of lacing, very clear chestnut ruby color.

Nose brings brown malts, biscuit, caramel, toffee, a little nutty like, some earthy root syrup, lots of chewy caramel, with some mild spicy earthy slight piney hops int he background.

Taste brings hops out front, spicy piney and orange peel with fair bitterness at first, then background creamy brown malts attempt to come through, toasty nutty and more caramel again, with a little biscuit and toffee notes. The hops really j ust destroy the malts and it's hard to get past them, more like a brown IPA, a so-so brown IPA. Finish is very bitter, spicy bitterness with long lingering pine and orange peel spicy hop bitterness, very little malt taste in there, but sticky somehow.

mouth is med bod, a little soft, nice carbonation at least.

Overall, well it's not too bad at least, just not very good, as the hops and malts have no chance at balance, the malts would have been nice had the hops not just smashed it like a bug on a windshield. The hops are fairly boring as well, generic boring IPA like hops. If they were in a nice balance the choice of hops might have been a bit more tolerable.

Appearance: Clear, brown color with one finger of head that fades quickly with streaks of lace.

Aroma: Toasted malt, a little molasses, some cardboard, a little bready and some earthy hops.

Taste: A nice, nutty, toasted malt brown ale upfront, then increasing earthy bitterness that lingers into the finish. Hints of spice in the middle. Somewhat nutty with cooked veggie notes as well on the finish.

The Rest: Not a bad beer. I don't usually care for Magic Hat much, but this isn't too bad. A nice twist on a Brown ale.

A: [3.75] Deep rich brown color. The head is off white and is about 1/2 a finger with a rough pour. The bottle lists the ABV (6.2%) and there is a date code that translates to made 10/24/14.

S: [2.75] Slight hint of brown sugar. Not a prominent nose at all.

T: [2.50] Mild roasted malts up front. I think I can taste the booze - which shouldn't happen at 6.2%.

M: [3.00] Fair body and slightly elevated carbonation

O: [2.50] Lackluster taste across the palate and the nose. Just nothing exciting or noteworthy. I wouldn't drink this one again. Not bad just not good either.

A: Pours a clear, almost opaque deep mahogany in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation and moderate amounts of garnet red highlights. The beer has a half finger tall foamy tan head that slowly reduces to medium thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of nutty and toasted malts with lighter aromas of grassy and earthy hops.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of nutty and toasted malts with just a hint of sweetness from caramel malts. That is followed by slightly stronger flavor of grassy and earthy hops with just a hint of pine hops. Light to moderate amounts of bitterness in the finish which does not linger for long.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp

O: An interesting choice of hops (earthy and grassy) for a hoppy brown ale. Enjoyable but not sure that I would want to have more than one of these in a session.
