Looks ok. Ya know I was reading some of the other reviews and people were saying too bitter, no malt etc. It's not too bitter but it it's pretty light flavored. It's got the flavor of a juiced IPA and the nose but they both seem watered down and very light. Very crisp quickly gone finish. Ok but like a macro-IPA if that makes sense.

I had high expectations from Magic Hat: I thought this would be a "juicy," beer but despite the most distinct grapefruit flavor of any beer I've tasted, this beer only has a moderate haze and doesn't linger on the palate long after a sip. The ale is lightly carbonated, there's minimal suds and virtually no lacing. Despite the grapefruit, floral and piney notes come through clearly and a hint of mango. Overall, this beer is too harsh and not at all fulfilling.

This beer should have been right in my wheel house. Pours a nice straw colored gold with a slight haze. Smell is faint cracker and one dimensional citrus hop. Taste is immediately bitter without the supporting malt and hop flavor. Very harsh without the reward. Not a well made IPA from my perspective, so many better options on the market,

This was poured into a nonic pint glass. The appearance was a hazy burnt orange color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about thirty seconds. Messy lacing sticks around the glass. The smell starts off with the sweet grapefruit pulpiness. Light sticky tones of lemon and freshly cut grass rub into the blend. The taste starts off bitter bringing in a rind-like quality from the grapefruit. It gradually gets sweet and combines with the bitter nicely. A sticky grapefruit aftertaste leads into a sticky sweet finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly light allowing the bitterness to take the lead on the harshness. Overall, I had come into this beer with low expectations, and it turned out way better than I had thought. A Magic Hat beer that I could have again.

Eh, s'ok. I had this at a party where this seemed like the least bad option. I don't get the recent fad of grapefruit. Don't certain kinds of hops already have a citrus flavor? You can certainly mimic the bitterness of grapefruit. That said, I rather enjoyed it. The one thing I didn't like was that it was rather harsh on the back of my throat. Not sure what that was all about.

Appearance: Pours a semi-cloudy golden amber, with a fine off-white head and a line of lace.

Aroma: Fruity, citrus hops. Very nice and quite appealing.

Taste: Bitter and sour up front, with a rush of hoppy bitterness through the finish. Body remains lighter, but there’s a crisp refreshing quality here making this one quite drinkable and enjoyable. Not a great IPA, but not a bad one, either.

Bottle to pint glass. Looks great - brilliant amber orange. Finger+ thick head, with some retention as I finish it. Not too much in the nose, some pine and sweet scents. Decently balanced, maybe a little heavy on the grapefruit, though that's a tough flavor to keep in check I'd imagine. Hoppy pine and citrus flavors come through at the end. Crisp mouthfeel. Average fruit / IPA beer. Wouldn't invest in a sizer.

I might be a bit biased, given my affinity for grapefruit, but, this IPA was everything I hoped for when I purchased it. A strong citrus zest gives a powerful bite, washed away by a wave of grapefruit and IPA bitterness that complements them perfectly. Maybe the reviews are from people who enjoy IPA's, but not grapefruit specifically? I will say, though, if you're specifically looking for a /grapefruit/ IPA, this is it.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle ,into a Cigar City pint glass. No date on the bottle.

Thin soapy white head with good retention and sticky lacing.Hazy gold colored body with an orange hue,low clarity with distorted light showing through the glass.Lots of sediment floating around, with a moderate amount of carbonation.

On the nose I get grapefruit and citrus hops, with a pretty good amount of sweet and caramel malts. Also some pine hops mixed in there.

On the palate I get mostly pine and floral hops up front, with some citrus hops in the middle, finished off with sweet and caramel malts balanced by grapefruit peel on the back end.It tastes like it may have sat on the shelf a little too long.I wish this brewery would put dates on the bottle,or the label.

The mouth feel is thin and a little bit sticky.Good amount of hop bite on the tong, but not much oxidation.Smooth easy finish.

I don't know if this one sat too long,or if it is supposed to be like this. It's an okay IPA but there are plenty I would drink before this. Can't say I would turn it down, but I wouldn't look for it either.Tastes more like an English IPA than a AIPA.Not bad but not great.

Got this one in a variety pack. By far the worst out of the pack. Taste is thin and kind of offputting. Almost tastes like watered down dish soap. It's an easy drinker. Would not buy again but would drink in a pinch. Their black ipa is delicious however.

Served in a pint glass from the bottle.

Appearance: Semi cloudy hold color with medium bubbles to the body creating a white head rising roughly half a finger's length.

Smell: Light malts with hits of citrus.

Taste: Malts and hardcore citrus skin. Like it tastes like I was biting into a whole grapefruit without peeling it, no pun intended.

Mouth: Heavy carbonation, sticky and a heavy bitter finish.

Overall: Good brew, definitely better than my previous. Nice hard bitter feel which makes you lust a bit. Salud!

Poured from a glass into a shaker pint glass.

L: Similar to Magic Hat's #9. Golden amber and somewhat hazy. Slight creamy head with little lacing.

S: The aroma of this beer is very off-putting--very musky and funky. The aroma is oddly unrelated to the flavor, which is quite good.

T: The grapefruit flavor prevails, with spices (cinnamon, maybe) lingering in the aftertaste.

F: Hoppy and effervescent. Moderately dry.

O: I just can't get past the weird aroma of this beer. It would be a strong choice, otherwise, but since beers hits the nose first . . . .

Magic Hat Brewing Co. "Electric Peel Grapefruit I.P.A."
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, only a partial inkjet code remains
$2 @ Wegmans, King Of Prussia, PA

Notes: Hazy golden body beneath a surprisingly full and fluffy bright white head that leaves very good lacing. Excellent appearance overall! The aroma displays the Magic Hat house yeast along with grapefruit. I'm a little surprised that the yeast over-rides the grapefruit, but OK. The flavor displays both as well, but with a bit more grapefruit which is nice. It's surprisingly bitter though, not unlike real grapefruit - except that I can't just sprinkle some sugar on top of this! Wow! Off-balance in my opinion. The malt backs up everything else but doesn't do it's part to level things: it's nice, fairly grainy, and just slightly sweetish, but not full enough to compete with the bitterness that's present. Light-medium in body and gently crisp across the palate. Overall, odd. I think the grapefruit peel added a bit too much bitterness on it's own, and it just spiraled from there. But they taste these things first, right? R&D, brewer's roundtable, whatever? Overall: really just a one trick pony that does a good job of putting forward grapefruit rind but without balance. PASS.

L: Light golden yellow. Pours with two fingers of head and it lingers for a while. Leaves plenty of lacing.

S: Grapefruit.

T: Grapefruit. A bit more grapefruit in this one than some of the others, but it's refreshing on a hot summer day.

F: Light to medium body, high carbonation.

O: I look forward to this one next year. I wasn't a big fan of these fruit ipas last year, but they've grown on me.

I have been dabbling with AIPAs this evening and since this is one of the CANs that is on-deck in my backlog, it makes the cut. I bought this at The Friendly Greek Bottle Shop (along with a couple of others) for the furtherance of The CANQuest (tm).

From the CAN: "Power of the peel!"

I Crack!ed this bad boy open and CANducted an inverted Glug. This raised two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, eggshell-white head with moderate retention. Color was Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5) with NE-quality clarity, prompting a visit from The Gelt Gang of Midas, Croesus & Mammon, all squabbling for a taste. Nose had an artificial grapefruit smell, like Warsteiner Grapefruit, which I frankly disliked. I like grapefruit and when they use shortcuts, I CAN usually tell. The CAN reads "Ale Brewed with Grapefruit Peel and Natural Flavor added". Hmmm. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium. The taste had a definite grapefruit bitterness, but I am unCANvinced that peel was the way to go with it. It imparted a tart bitterness and I could definitely identify it as grapefruit, but it was like licking the exterior, rather than getting into the beautiful fruit itself. This was kind of a novelty beer and it showed. I really would not want more than one or two of these. Finish was dry, fairly bitter, but not the kind of bitter normally associated with an AIPA. Interesting, but a swing & a miss, IMHO.

Pours a light golden color with small white head. Aroma is overwhelmingly grapefruit. Trying hard to find anything other than grapefruit. Maybe a little malt, but barely. Taste is more grapefruit. Not overpowering though. A little candied sweetness as well. Kind of a one trick pony. It has a decent amount of bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium and pretty much dead on for the style. Overall, I thought I was going to hate this beer, but honestly, it's not bad. It's obviously not at the top of my list for IPA's, but it's definitely drinkable.

As a Vermont fan and with family there, I always want to find beers I prefer there, which have been scarce.
This may be the best MH offer Ive enjoyed yet. I think under-rated at BA because the grapefruit is no more dominant than in Sculpin Grapefruit.

A) Winner if measured in lace. Pours CLEAR, lighter honey amber. Quality all the way down, ample lace sheeting and a thick collar.

S) Citric hopped up nose amplified, and perhaps too unified under grapefruit flag.

T) Tangy due to grapefruit, bright, zesty, flavorful, and tasty. Grapefruit hop notes dominate on top of a a clean caramel malt backdrop with some other woody/grassy notes and bitter pepper in the finish.

F) Fine, bright, peppery.

Overall, underrated by BAs. Blind test against other Grapefruit beers and it will finish fine mid-pack in the 3.9s. Try 6.

From a twelve ounce bottle, bought by my wife, this is a lightly hazy gold color with a tall, puffy, white head. The aroma is serious grapefruit...with a woody, pine-like hop scent. Smells like it is perfect for summer. The taste is a balance of fruit, malt, and intensely flavorful. Medium in body and balanced. Excellent.

This is the final sample from Magic Hat's mixed IPA twelve that I've reviewed. Starts with a wet, creamy white head on top of a light amber body. Nose is faint, but pure citrus rind, as promised.

Thin in body and heavy carbonation up front. Tight and oily after that, with heavy citrus bitterness but little hop substance to speak of. Finish is actively unpleasant, with high astringency where tasty hop bitterness should be. These guys are just not hopheads or they don't drink their own beer. Disappointing.

12oz undated can.

Pours hazy yellow with moderate retention and decent lacing. Aromatics feature grapefruit zest and no hops. Light bodied and crisp with a slight oiliness. Grapefruit on the palate with a medium bitterness and zero malt. Dry but a bit juicy from the grapefruit. Finishes with bitter grapefruit pith.

Not bad if you're looking for a grapefruit fix but there are no hops to be found in this beer. More hops and a bit more grapefruit please.

Hardly worth reviewing - if you want a grapefruit-flavored beer, here it is. Less sweet than others I've had, to distinguish. In fact, not sweet at all. Flavor is more like grapefruit rinds or that white stuff right under the peel, less the pulpy part. So not totally my thing, but you now know what expect. Points for being exactly what it says.
