11/8/2005. Pours a dark brown, amber tinted body. Slightly cloudy but that's hard to distinguish due to the color. Nice thick tan head. The overall appearance I must say is pretty nice. Interesting set of aromas: roasted and chocolate with a mix of banana, vanilla, and some yeast. The taste is interesting but in the end quite good. It's got some coffee and chocolate but at the same time there is banana along with other fruity tastes. Roast all those and you've got this strange brew. There's a slight hop bite as well. It's not the greatest beer I've tried but it was definitely a fun beer to sample and review. There's so much going on that I want to try it again. I bet I find something else about it that I missed.

A: Deep opaque brown, almost black. Looks like a stout. Small tan head, that dissipates quickly. Almost no lacing on the glass.

S: Big malty nose, ripe fruit, spices, some chocolate. Great aroma with this beer.

T: Toasted malt, carmel, yeasty and fruity.

M. Smooth, very little carbonation. A bit on the watery side, which I wasn't expecting. It looks and smells like a big beer, but doesn't have that feeling once it hits your mouth.

D: I found this to be very drinkable. Definitely a solid brew.

Sampled from a 12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass at 40 degrees.

A - Pours a cola-brown with a small head, but strong carbonation.

S - Sweet n' spiced with a strong caramel backbone.

T - Spices seem to be faint amongst the overly caramelized-malt...but flavors are a little on the thinner side.

M - Lighter-medium body with good carbonation.

D - Didn't remain a strong selection...flavors quickly wear off as it warmed.

Cloudy raison body with almost no head, flattish looking.

Nice sweet aroma with plenty of banana, chocolate malt, and sweet powdery yeast. Fruity.

Tastes very light and fruity. Some banana and almost a hint of artificial strawberry flavor. A touch jammy. Not much clove but that could be because this sample has been cellared for 6 months.

Spicy finish. Light bodied. Mild carbonation but spritzy in the finish.

Very drinkable. Sessionable even but interesting enough to keep me happy.

A- Pours a murky brown with touches of gold and amber. It's head is thick at first but fades quickly (could have been due to the cleanliness of my glass).

S- Notes of banana and spice with a touch of malty sweetness.

T- Not what I expected. Though the nose has fruity notes, the taste does not round off like a normal DW. It's almost a little bit smoky/salty rather than sweet. This sounds awful to say, but soggy burnt toast comes to mind. There are hints of sweetness and spice, but there is some overbearing taste which dominates this beer ... not in a good way.

MF- Nice carbonation, smooth with a creamy feel.

D- I'd have to agree with Jason A on this one ... don't drink it by itself. Unlike the German DWs, this one works better with food than on its own. I was surprised to see this labeled as a DW since it really doesn't compare too well to others that I've tried. Then again, what does compare/match a nice beer from Weihenstephan? A good attempt, but too watery/bitter for my taste.

Pour: murky, dingy, opaque mahogany, minimal khaki head fades to nil, few chunks of clumpy yeast settle in the glass.

Nose: nutty, musty yeast, roasted wheat malt. Fairly subtle overall.

Taste: starts off astringent and almost plasticky. Sour wheat malts, some roastedness, fruity/nutty yeast in finish.

Feel: smooth, slick, a little lacking in character. Crisp for a wheat beer.

Drinkability/Overall: Not a particularly impressive beer. Astringent/plastic undertones are too distracting to ignore. Not awful, but not something I'd ever try to find again.

Dark, opaque reddish brown color. It looks of rich mahogany. Very little head. There might be carbonation but I sure can't see it. Head is prevalent but leaves no traces on the glass.

Spicy winter-warmer smell. Malty, but sweet. The spices shoot out of the glass.

Nice spicy, malty winter flavor. Pungent winter wheat flavor. Slight sourness that works against the malty backing. If there are hops in this beer, I certainly can't find them. But that's to be expected.

Smooth but thick. A nice combination. Flavor sits on the tongue, but the thickness doesn't. Sweetness is a perfect balance of the malt and spice flavors.

The guy where i bought this from told me it was retired. Too bad. It's a fine, warming winter beer. Good bye St. Gootz. I'll miss you.

This is the first time I've had this labeled as Saint Gootz. I actually had pours from the first known keg outside of the tasting room at the brewery of Batch 371 at American Flatbread in July of '05 and I thought it was outstanding at the time.
This one has a freshness date of Feb '06...guess I'm getting around to this one about 6 months late, so I'll try to be fair.
Appears a dark, dense, murky reddish brown with a 2 finger light tan head that slowly fades into a small cap. Little chunks of spent Bavarian yeast drops into the goblet and settle near the bottom. Spots of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of caramel, light toffee, and cocoa dusted bananas. Slight amount of spent yeast/oxidation in the aroma that is ever so faint and expected for being a half year past it's prime...especially in a wheat beer.
Taste is of the same aromas. Little hints of cocoa dusted banana and caramel that are typical of the dunkel weizen style.
Mouthfeel is smooth, sweet on the tongue at first, and slick along the tongue leading to a dusty and semi-dry finish.
Not too bad for being aged a small amount of time.
Todd H.- please, please, please up the abv on a batch of this and turn it into a Weizenbock for the champaign bottles.

Pours an almost opaque deep dark brown with a thin film of tan head on top.


Roasted cashews with a hint of bittersweet chocolate.


Begins with a typical wheat mouthfeel, that then turns tartly acidic, but finishes with a sweet nutty malt sensation. Decent, though not spectacular.

Appearance: Plum mahogany with chocolate hues; cloudy, with no visibility. No head or lacing; low viscosisty.

Aroma: Banana wheat aroma with caramel notes. Raisins quickly become apparent, and pleasant low chocolate notes emerge as the beer warms.

Taste: First mouthful is curious, and took a little work - lactose sours, espresso, and dunkel weizen flavors seem to be competing. Nice wheat finish, that becomes better as it warms. But the beer really picked up as I kept drinking - bananas, raisins, and intriguing cola notes all add to the flavor.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, light - good wheat beer body. Med/low carbonation - good banana wheat finish.

Drinkability: More and more drinkable as it warms (just don't warm it too much). If MH had called this a dunkel-weizen, I might say it was unbalanced and just a little too sweet. But they gave this a "dark wheat ale" label, which bought them license to really develop fruity flavors that are almost reminiscent of a scotch ale. Pretty bold and one of the better offerings I've had from MH. Definitely drinkable if you can get past the first disorienting mouthful. Check it out.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a dark brown with a red tint, a short tan head that fades quickly and doesn’t leave much lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted malt, caramel, dark chocolate, wheat and a touch of dark fruits.

T: It doesn’t taste as sweet as it smells. The flavor is bready, metallic and a little smoky with some chocolate in it. The after-taste is similar to that of a Stout or Porter.

M: Smooth, with a medium body, light-to-medium carbonation.

D: It’s not too filling and has some flavor to it, but something about it just isn’t thrilling me enough to make want another. Overall I just didn’t like it very much.

Poured a pale brown hue with a 3 finger pillowy head. There was decent retention but poor lacing.

The smell was mostly roasted malt with a bit of an earhy nose.

The flavor was of toasted wheat, with an unidentified and unpleasant sharpness. Relatively dry and a bit metallic. Someone said unripe banana, and I agree. Needs more of a yeast character. Not something I would like to try again.

The mouthfeel was thin and dry.

Not very drinkable. The flavor is entirerly off. Not a good example of the style.

Deep amber hue with light tan specks floating throughout. Rich, malty aroma followed by similar taste. It has that Belgian tinge to it and brings a shadow of aftertaste reinforcing the dark wheat. Like everything from Magic Hat, I'm glad I gave it a try, but I won't be rushing back for another anytime soon. Not my kind of beer, but it would be nice to have one on a cool night by the campfire after a hot, sweaty day.

Appearance: Nice ruby transparency. Expected a big head to rise easily but nothing much developed.

Smell: Fairly rich with grainy overtones. Some chocolate aromas and even alcohol can be detected.

Taste: A bit of a decline at this point but still good. There's some spiciness as you might expect, and all the basic elements of the style seem to be in place. The taste runs a bit shallow, however, with an offputting tang that is undesirable to say the least.

Mouthfeel: Fizzy but the head wouldn't develop so go figure. A little watery as well; not much to speak of.

Drinkability: I could actually make a session of these. It would never be my go to beer or one that I would seek out in a bar, but it's practical and doesn't get on your nerves any more over time than after your first sip.

Beef Notes: Pretty solid beer here. Being from Magic Hat, I'm not surprised, but I would like to see them go for a "wow" beer rather than another just good offering. Bottom line is I'll drink it happily but pass it up if there's Franziskaner or the like.

Presented in a 12oz (that's 3/4 pint to you, according to the label) and served up in my trusty Paulaner weissbier glass. Purchased as part of a mixed-bag of singles at Mo's Wine & Spirits in Fairfield, CT.
Has a dark murky brown color, lots of tiny streams of carbonation, and a thick, sticky light beige head that left nice lace behind.
Nose has the typical caramel-coated yeasty grain aroma along with some unripened banana and clove spiciness.
Tastes pretty tame. Decent caramel malt flavor, kinda like a banana-cinnamon bread with a bit of clove thrown in for added tang. Light metallic bite and saltiness in the finish that doesn't want to fade away is knocking this down from a 4.0.
Feel is medium, slightly slick at the mid-point after starting off crisply.
Overall, a decent attempt at the style. Don't see 'em around much so worth a try to see how an American brewery takes a shot at it.

It pours a clear deep brown, like dark tea, ruby in flashes. Two full fingers of light tan head dip soon to a pithy sheen. Loops of lacing glaze the inside of the glass.

The aroma bears a dusky wheat sweetness along with notes of cola and black cherry. A tangy sourness swings about as well.

Upon sipping, a flash of grain sweetness is quickly laid low by a tongue-tickling sourness. A tart cherry pucker pops up along with a rapid glimpse of caramel. A lightly spicy hop bitterness lingers through to a moderately long finish. The overall flavor is at times abrupt, though not unpleasant...not the best or worst endorsement.

Between light and medium bodied, the grain presence lays soft and sweet on the palate, sliding away slowly.

There's something here that makes me want to really like it, but there're some so-so elements and thin spots that just won't let it rise up. There's some goodness here, and it does drink pretty easily, but that's in spite of itself it seems. So I'm not sorry I tried it, but I don't know that I'll repeat it again anytime soon.

Not a bad offering. Smell is wheaty, with some fruity notes. It is a dark ruby chocolate with a small head. Taste improves as it warms, with a pleasnt whaety maltiness. Mouthfeel is medium in nature, not too harsh. Drinkability is quite good, smooth enough to have another.

Saint Gootz is a fair enough beer, and probably one of Magic Hat's better brews. It's got some character to it and it has all of the trademark requisites of the dunkle weizen style, albeit it slightly muted.

It pours a cloudy brown body with amber highlights beneath a full head of off-white that holds fairly well before dropping to a thin cap. The lacing could be better.

In the nose, delicate ripe banana and mild clove work their way in amidst yeast fruitiness and a smear of malt.

It's medium bodied and spritzy in the mouth.

The flavor is as the nose suggests, with mild phenolics peeking through the malt and yeast esters. The clove is perhaps more pronounced than the banana; and the maltiness delivers a nice, wheat and toast character with just a suggestion of cocoa. Nice!

Partaken of while enjoying this very warm spring day in New England. Uncharacteristically "hot" for this time of year makes the weizenbier seem fitting.
A: A hard pour with a bit of a shake to loosen the yeast produces a fluffy, one centimeter head that's muddied white in color. The head lasts for a few seconds and is then gone, reduced to a meager ring of bubbles around the glass' perimeter. Poor to no lacing. The beer itself is a hazy, very dark amber-brown in color, almost nearing the opaque border. Very active carbonation from what is visible and the amount of "bubbling" along the sides of the glass.
S: The smell, similar to the appearance, is not terribly exciting. I detect mostly whole wheat bread and yeast with extremely faint hints of clove and coriander.
T: Taste features an upfront display of bready wheat with some bananas that's on par for the style. Mild hop presence at themidway point, but then tapers to a sour and yeasty aftertaste that is a bit cloying. Not much depth present, which is something I enjoy in a beer.
M: Medium bodied with a playful carbonation that's quite enjoyable and not overdone. Not sticky, but crisp and smooth as per the style. Aftertaste is not dry and is more refreshing as a result.
D: An average dunkel, nothing particularly memorable save for the overbearing aftertaste. I was hoping to find a good, semi-local dunkelweizen, but unfortunately this is not it. The head retention (especially for a weizenbier) needs to be worked on as does the taste; hopefully the scents will follow.

On tap at Capital Ale House downtown Richmond. Beautiful pour

Following a pint of #9 from the tap - thought that Saint Goötz would be unique.
Found it a very likable Dunkel Weizen style which I am still learning and have limited contact with.

6 % abv higher gravity (1.062) Yeast is a German Weiss and provides a plesant banana nut bread aroma. Hopped with Tettnang with a low 20 IBSs provides a dry ending with some lasting clove. Caramel Wheat and Munich augment the main malted wheat for a medium body and nice deep brown. Suspect some chocolate malt although not listed by Magic Hat website.

Trying to swing the overhead halogen light to look at color. I find red glints before burning my fingers. Sitting in the booth across from the taps an attentive staff person brings me a glass of ice water without comment ( as if she has seen this happen before many time?)

brewed from a 14th century Germanic said to be inscribed onto an old challis.
Unique like no other - I have heard that is is similar to Heart of Darkness but never got to try it before its retirement.

The beer poured into the glass lightly hazy deep amber brown with an off-white head that could hardly even emerge and then left before even attempting to lace the glass.

The aroma was wheat aroma with a distinct chocolate malt character. Also present was a burnt caramel aromatic and a smoky vibe.

The flavor was lightly fruity with a banana flavor and chocolate melded with wheat. A bit of the same burnt caramel and smoke was present and made the beer more interesting.

The finish was dry with a lasting graham flavor of that burnt caramel, but the aftertaste was not bad at all. The body was medium and the carbonation low. Not a bad beer, but nothing too exciting here.

Appearance: Pours a dark caramel brown with a thin head that dissipates quickly. Little light penetrates this dark wheat ale. It is cloudy with visible sediment.

Smell: A bit of wet grain smell with hints of fermenting sour apple. Wheat really dominates the aroma with some yeasty overtones.

Taste: Strong wheat flavor hits the palate, along with heavy yeasty overtones. I liked the balance between the yeasty flavor & the wheat flavor, but it turned slightly sour in the finish which gave a slightly strange aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Thin to medium bodied. Medium level of carbonation makes it fairly refreshing.

Drinkability: I find this an enjoyable dunkel wiezen, but the sour aftertaste limits me to only one or so. The aftertaste is a bit overpowering in the second serving.

Comments: Dunkel wiezen being my favorite beer style, I am a bit picky. Saint Gootz was a nice dunkel wiezen, but not my favorite. The sour aftertaste is not as desirable as with others in this style. It has a good wheat flavor & body, but does not stand up as well versus some of its German counterparts.

Deep, dark brown with a rich ruby red hue. Beige head is thick, tight and creamy with a trailing stick along the glass and good retention.

Roasted malts, fresh crack wheat, husky, toasty bread and chocolate in aroma. Faint earth / clay in the background.

Smooth mouthfeel, medium, even body. Creamy carbonation. Chocolatey / carob flavor that mingles in the moderately roasted character. Bready with toasted crusts. Weak coffee. Crisp and dry edge, and a well-balanced hop snap of bitterness. Herbal, pithy, grassy. Mild, but pleasing, sour/tangy note that melds well with the wheat flavors. Some herbal lingering in the finish along with faded wheat and hint of powdery spice and earth.

Probably Magic Hat's best attempt at a wheat ale.

Just a terrible, terrible beer than neither I nor my wife could drink. We had to pour about 1/2 into our sink because it was quite revolting.

Started off strong with a nice appearance; dark burgundy/brown in color with a mocha colored head and nice retention. Aromas of plums, alcohol, and grape juice. The taste was essentially that of prune juice with some plum flavors; and that is really not a good thing. Additional flavors of rotten fruit came out as well. Quite thin and juicy, in a bad way. The taste was just so bad, we couldn't believe what we were drinking.

Pours a very cloudy brown with some red/amber highlights with an enormously puffy light tan head after a vigorous pour.
Aroma of banana nut bread and with some spicy yeast and dark fruit notes.
Flavors of dark citrus and lightly spiced cloves dominate at first and then soem dark wheat bread characteristics take over. Doesn't really blend well together.
Mouthfeel is little past medium with some lingering fruity stickiness.
Drinkability is above average but something just doesn't seem to meld and combine well here, almost feels rushed and experimental in nature. Don't the really well-balanced taste test that I would expect from the style. Kind of disjointed flavors thrown around.
