Appearance: A nice one finger tan head contrasts this black beer nicely and the lacing was fairly clingy.
Smell: An unusual amount of hop in the nose for a beer of this color. There was also sweetness of toasted chocolaty malts. A great balance between the two.
Taste: The hop flavor hits right at once just like the aroma did and then the chocolate malts kick in. The malts are a little more smoky than my nose detected, but the grassy hops box back and win the match. It was a good match though.
Mouthfeel: A little creamy, but mostly smooth.
Drinkability: One easy drinking porter. A pleasant surprise.

The mystery beer in my Joe's Garage variety pack, poured a deep brown with dark near crimson hue when held up to the light with a large 2 finger mocha colored head.Perfect 5 for me aroma wise its American big on the fruity, piney hop mixed with chocolate and earth just fantastic love the big hop profile. The same goes for the flavors big piney drier hop profile intertwined with bitter chocolate with a earthy raw nut lingering finish.A little prickly on the mouth but nothing to take away from the great flavors of the beer, damn I wish there more porters like this it is the most hoppedup version I think I have had to date.

12 oz brown bottle with a freshness date on the back label. Under the cap "Drink it Down & lose your Frown"

A- Thin bubbly tan lace leaves a few rings of lace, dark leather brown ... nearly black in color.

S- Campfire charcoal, unsweetened chocolate and carob aroma. Faint dark berry fruit aroma with a musty nose in the back.

T&M- Straight to the point roastiness, hard crisp mouth feel rolls out a nice smoothness. Medium body. Balanced sharp bite from the roasted grain and hops balance out the maltiness and then some more. Finishes semi-dry with a long mildly burnt grain flavor.

D- Its been a long time since the last time I enjoyed a Porter, very well balanced and the flavors seemd to meld well together. Kudos to Magic Hat for this new brew ... "Year Round" please. Paired this with a pork roast and then later some dark chocolate.

I was smitten with this beer immediately - love at first sip! It has a rich chocolatey flavor that left me wanting more! It has a deep dark brown color, a creamy colored head, and a sweet-ish smell. Since it wasn't yet available for sale at the time, I took home a growler from the brewery! A favorite... I love this porter. If you're a porter fan, I'd be willing to bet you'd agree.

12 ouncer, from the Joe's Garage box, has consume before dating notched on to the rear of the label. Pours a reasonably dark and gloomy shade for a porter. Dark tan head, dissolves to a BA worthy tiny bubble film and light lacing is left upon a gentle swirl. Nose is boldly of black coffee and cocoa. This is an assertive porter, with notes of burnt grains, coffee, molassas.A slight buttery flavor and nuttyness is picked up late. Nice stuff, much better then its boxmate, the fairly lame Hefe, "Circus Boy". This one does not dissapoint and is well worth a try.

Dark chocolate in color with a full finger and a half of tan head...very full and half of it remains. The rest leaves some incredible lacing.
Sweet chocolate malt up front...some fig, plum as well.
Milk chocolate flavor with a hint of lactose...very minimal hopping and quite sweet, yet finishes dry which adds to the drinkability.
Mouthfeel feels robust at first, but turns quite thin in the finish.
Carbonation is good and no hint of any alcohol.
Another solid beer from Magic Hat...almost a cross between the Participation Ale I used to enjoy and Heart of Darkness.

Sage words from the bottle cap: "Put no stock in the tick of the clock."

Pours onyx colored with brown highlights, with an off-white head that doesn't rise up much. Faint aroma of roasted malt and smoke. Flavor is smokey charred wood, deeply roasted malts, some chalky cocoa, and an understated hop presence. The ringwood is there, but doesn't detract or overpower. Some smoke and coffee lingers. Not overly complex, but I like the smoke and it's nice to see MH come out with a new dark selection. Sort of a Batch 622 meets Heart of Darkness meets Ravell?

Pours a nice opaque black, with about a 1/2" tan head. Initial smell was very floral and hoppy. Upon tasting, fairly matly with some roasted chocolate flovors. The beer nicely coated my pallete, which I like in a porter. Magic hat definately did a nice job with this one!

Big froathy light brown head over a near black body. Body has a clear, mild ruby glow to it. As the big head fades it leaves some nice patchy lace. Aroma is of coniferous hops over charred + toasty big malts. Its almost like hops growing late in (New England) Fall season. Taste is a large mix of things. A lot of pine, toasted and roasted full malts, leaves burning in a campfire, and juicy fruits. Grainy and dry as well as slick and smooth lingering mouthfeel. Nice and drinkable all season porter.

The combination of intense piney hops and roasted sharp malts doesn't seem as seemless as it could be. Still not a bad hoppy porter.

This pours a very dark reddish black with a smallish tan head. The smell has some roasted malt and coffee to it,but it also has some hoppy citrus scents that are a little out of place. The taste has a roasted malt and coffee flavor to it. It's not a bad flavor at all,but it's a little hoppier than I would like. The m/f is light and well balanced making this a decent porter. It's not the best, but Magic Hat has made a pretty good porter.

Black/very dark red with tan head. Head retention is fairly good with nice tan lacing. Nice aroma, predominantly coffee with chocolate malts and hops. Very similar taste, touch of toffee too. Finishes with dry-hop flavor. The carbonation bites nicely with the bitterness.

I'm a very picky porter drinker, but this one really hits the spot. I wish I could get a 6'er of this. The hops stand out nicely at the end and give this beer a nice twist.

12 oz bottle, nice art as typical from Magic Hat.

Appearance: Very dark brown almost black in color. Shortly lived head left nice lacing.

Smell: Smokey coffee, roasted malts, and a sweet almost fruitiness as well.

Taste: Mostly roasted malty goodness with plenty of hop character to balance it all out. I can taste that fruitiness I picked up in the aroma as well as the smoke.

Mouthfeel: A medium body with a nice carbonation crispness.

Drinkability: One was enough for last night, I think maybe this is due to the weather becoming warmer and I just wasn't in the mood for a porter.

Overall, I had no idea what this beer was since no where on the bottle did it say but upon tasting it was quite obvious I was drinking a porter. Not the best porter I have ever had but a nice well balanced one that I would gladly drink again.

"Overachievers Underestimate the Rest of Us"

Deep red / brown color with a milky, bubbly head. Sweet, light roasted malty aroma with a suprising amount of hops and fruits. Smooth, roasted malt flavor with an underlying fruitiness and a touch of caramel. Some more almost resinous hops are buried within the malts...they become more pronounced as it warms. Medium bodied with a dry finish

A dry, hoppy porter and an enjoyable take on the style by Magic Hat. Rave.

Sampled in Joe's Garage, purchased on sale from Martignetti's for $10.99

Appearance = Good looking dark, deep brown, nearly black. Good 1/2'' head which fades away rapidly, leaving a bit of film. Respectable lacing.

Smell = REALLY like this scent as it packs an intense hop punch bursting with flavor. The roasted malts follow and are really well blended with the hop smell. I think I'm going to definitely enjoy this porter.

Taste = This porter was tailor made for my tastes as it is definitely hopped up more than most. Great tangy sourness from the hops that meshes well with the coffee like malt flavors. Refreshing, light and doesn't filll you up. Easy drinking but still tons of flavor. Mouthfeel is a bit watery and flat without much carbonation. That's the only thing about this beer that's average. Drinkability is extremely high for a porter. I admit it's not my favorite style and it's very rare I find an example in which I enjoy more than one in a sitting but this certainly fits that bill.

Overall = Outstanding job from Magic Hat. This one's definitely a RAVE! I'd be seriously disappointed if this one's sent to the grave, especially after Circus Boy was greenlighted.

Much thanks to fatty for the growler...
Appears black with a small tan head. Spotty lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of caramel, chocolate, black patent malt, and sweet fruit.
Taste is equal to the aromas.
Mouthfeel is dry and slightly sweet.
Not a bad brew from our friends in South Burlington!

This is my favorite offering from Magic Hat (that I have had) to date. I happen to drink this at just below room temp, that is the temperature it was in my car. I picked up a Variety Pack after work and when I got home and started putting them away I found a beer I didn't know. I poured it in a pint glass (not knowing what glass to use or even the style the beer would be) and wow was I pleasantly surprised! Here is the breakdown.

Appearance: Pours a dark almost black with creamy tan head and decent lacing.

Smell: The smell is very unique. I think it is a bit of dark fruits but not sweet like a RIS more like tree bark (whatever that means, its what it reminds me of). There is also a definite smoke quality to the aroma.

Taste: It has a hint of smokiness that I really like. It also has suggestions of mocha, unsweetened or dark chocolate and coffee. Toasted malts with subtle hops. Very well blended smooth easy drinking porter with a great (complex) aftertaste of smoky chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Fantastically smooth. Yet in the middle it is crisp and the aftertaste lingers as if it were dry but it is a little sweet as well. That hardly makes any sense, but when do Magic Hat beers make sense, they are just good to drink.

Drinkabitily: Through the roof in my opinion. Crisp easy drinking mostly simple beer that is not extreme or cloying in any way, wow. Way to go Magic Hat this is a winner.

Hope this is helpful.

While this porter features primarily roasted flavors, such as tasty mocha, slightly bitter toasted grain, some chocolate, etc., it also has a fairly assertive hop bite (which is even more detectable in the aroma) that melds nicely with the other bitter burnt flavors. A creamy mouthfeel with a sharp carbonation tang.

Interesting, drinkable, but not amazing. The mocha flavor is pretty delicious and blends well with the other roasted flavors, and the hop bitterness stands out too. But, while this one is good, fantastic American porters aren’t too hard to come by. Nonetheless, recommended.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer pours a deep brown with a foamy tan head that fades slowly and leaves some decent lacing on the glass.

S: I’m having a hard time believing what I’m smelling first. It’s hops! That’s right. A strong hops smell in a porter. Huh? Then there’s a malty background of roasted coffee and a bit of alcohol.

T: Just like with the smell, there’s a heck of a lot more hops than you’d expect in this type of beer. The hops flavor is followed by a coffee sweetness with a touch of fruit. Then the hops return in the after-taste.

M: Very crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, clean finish.

D: It’s very flavorful, not very filling and goes down real easy. This beer’s a mystery all right. It has the tastiness of an IPA, the smooth silkiness of a stout and looks like a porter. With all the surprise aside, this was a very good beer.

Black with ruby hues to light, full light brown head, good carbonation, and decent lace rings. Citrusy hop aroma dominates -- complete surprise ! Some espresso notes underneath. Chocolate malt flavors dominate with a very nice hop balance and coffee /espresso notes. Medium-light bodied but a bit airy due to carbonation.

Awesome nicely balanced hop-infused porter/stout !

Man, it never ceases to astound me as to what is in the depths of my cellar here at Chez Woody! This one was in my Beerfrigerator at Mom-Za's 420 when I made the move in 2008 & resurfaced the other night as I was rooting around in said Beerfrigerator.

From the bottle: "A 'Rave' or to the 'Grave'? You tell us online at MysteryBeerMagicHat.Net".

Well, it is too late for the online poll, but a good time to finally Pop! the cap. I then began a slow, gentle pour into the awaiting glass since I had no idea of what was forthcoming. I decanted about 3/4 of the 3/4 pint of ale & stopped to perform a vigorous in-glass swirl. This proved that it had not lost any of its carbonation as I got three-plus fingers of dense, rocky, foamy, deep-tan/light-brown head with great retention that leaft loads of lacing in its wake. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44), allowing just a tad of light penetration & showing that it was not outright stygian black. Nose had a pronounced dark, rich chocolatiness, almost fudgy in its intensity. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but definitely big in the mouth and on the tongue and definitely big for the style. The taste, while chocolaty, was not as intense as the nose had led me to expect. Instead, it had a powdered chocolate flavor, putting me in mind of Nestle's Quik, which I stupidly snorted one time as a young kid. Not a bad taste, proving that it had held up well. Finish was actually quite dry, suggesting that the yeast had continued to do its job over time. What a find!

From the Joe's Garage 12 pack.

A- Mocha head, not that substantive; rich coffee/chestnut color.

S- Burnt malts/coffee/chocolate/caramel, whiff of hops n' alcohol. I have apparently been smelling beer.

T- Fizzy up front -- not huge on that -- but very smooth, rich taste. Unsweetened chocolate and roasted coffee. Some hops pop up, but quickly dissipate. Doesn't fade to much at all.

M- Creamy, rich and substantive. Too much carbonation kinda kills it for me, but I dig on the creaminess.

D- Not bad, but I wouldn't order it all that often. It is fairly well balanced for warmer weather drinking, with the carbonation and hops. At least I think Magic Hat is trying.

Pours out to be almost black with a tan headskie. A bit on the sweet side of things, but quite smooth. A very mellow porter which isn't trying to be anything more than just that. The Magic Hat yeasts come through, but I don't mind that. Easy to drink, but not overly special.
