Poured a slightly festering banana brown yellow color with little white film for head. The nose had some alcohol, yeast, lemon, citrus, and some banana. The taste offered yeasty banana and clove with a moderate amount of malt. Has a medium light body with ample carbonation. Fairly dirnkable, but not entirley enjoyable.

Review is from the February 2007 issue of Beeradvocate Magazine.

Yet another Mystery Beer from Magic Hat, delivered via one of their variety 12-packs. The label sports an odd and somewhat less-than-flattering picture of owner Alan Newman taking a nap. Underside of the cap reads, "The Unreal is the Real deal."

The yellow-golden brew shows a tinge of haze; great head retention; the lace has no problem sticking to the glass. Smooth, moderate body. Lemony citric and light floral and herbal aromas, with a doughy malt nose. A tad nutty in the middle, with some pear-like fruitiness. Soft, oily, lemon hop twang adds a lot to the beer's refreshing quality. Lots of soft hop flavor. Finishes dry, with a full but delicate floral aftertaste.

What an amazing session beer. One of the tastiest offerings from the Mystery Beer series yet, it paired well with roast beef and Boursin cheese on a baguette. Naps or no naps, Alan, brew more of this beer.

Poured into a pub glass from a 12oz brown bottle crimped cap

Clear,golden color with a slight haze,white sudsy head,dissapated a bit fast to a soapy suds look.Not looking very carbinated,looks a bit flat.

A funky yeasty aroma, carmell and pine aromas mostly,a bit spicey. Sort of a belgium aroma?

Tastes yeasty,a DME taste kind of corn like, even a slight plastic taste, light burnt carmell, piney,a nicely balanced beer,a sourness also noted. Finishes dry and tart, some bitterness with a yeasty bite.

The mouthfeel was slightly watery with a graint texture, somewhat rough on the palate.

Didn't really like this offering from Magic Hat, had a hard time finishing this beer.

"Down at Joe's Garage we didn't have no dope or LSD, but a couple of quarts of beer would fix it so the intonation would not offend your ear" - Zappa "Joe's Garage" I just got all of the Zappa albums downloaded on one file so I figured it was time to listen to some Joe's Garage with this variety pack. Appears lightly hazed pale golden tone with a large white egg shell hued head leaves behind minimal sparse lacing as it dwindles at a moderate pace. Aormatics some light sweetness cereal in nautre with some light herbal hops the two row light toasted malts here give off some grainy cooked veggie notes as well with a hint of corn syrup in there. Flavor evenly dispersed light sweetness with a decent amount of hop bitterness seem to blend on my palate all at once although this brew is lacking in flavor overall that grassy herbal hop bite stays with you kinda surprsing but it doesn't blend so well most German pils I love the aftertaste this one however I want to cleanse the ol' palate. Mouthfeel is lighter bodied not watery in any way ample carbonation tickles the back of the throat really stays with you after each sip. Drinkability, a decent crack at a German pils but give me some Troeg's Sunshine or Prima over this stuff any day of the week, a beer the masses might enjoy over and over again.

(Served in an American pint glass)

A- This beer has a bright yellow crystal clear body with a lot of big bubbles bouncing around in the glass. There is a white head that fades to a spotty film before I even set the glass down.

S- This beer has a soft noble hop note that is very dry. The smell is pretty clean overall.

T- This beer has a dry raw grain flavor with some notes of pale malt. The finish is sulfury and noble hop bite without much hop flavor.

M- This beer has a very light mouthfeel with a clean finish.

D- Described on the bottle as an ale this is definitely a lager. There is not much depth of flavor and the flavors it does have are not that pleasant.

Magic Hat shouldn't be calling this an ale. On the label: "3/4 pint of ale". Maybe more naptime is in order? The first one I had, yesterday, I was thinking "Ale...ale...ale????", having read the label. But nope, it's a freakin' German pils, which qualifies as a lager. At least it's a good pils.

Pours an almost hideously pale, light yellow, but it's true to style I suppose. Still, it seems just a little too light in color. Thin head, very fast bubbles. Zero lace.

Smells grainy and sweet, a bit of honey happening. Sweetness rides through, over anything else.

Flavorwise this is a really well-balanced, refreshing pilsner. Light bready malts, a nice hoppy zing, honeyed sweetness and fresh-cut grass. Not overly dry, with a grassy bitter finish, almost like eating fruit that's picked too young.

This is superbly refreshing, a great release for spring/summer...with that typically light and fruity Magic Hat character.

12 ounce bottle as part of the Magic Hat "Joe's Garage" spring variety 12 pack, bottle says best before June 2007. Served in a mug, the beer pours a light gold color with about an inch and a half frothy white head. Head retention and lacing are both OK. It smells like herbal/grassy hops and a bit of malt. It tastes like grain, malt and some hops in the finish, with a slight bitter/tangy aftertaste. Mouthfeel and body are both light. Drinkability is decent, but I'm not sure if I could drink more than 2-3 of these at a time. Overall, I think it's just an OK beer. Nothing special, but not bad either.

This beer was part of my most recent trip to the "famous" Blacksburg, VA Kroger. In a 12pk variety sampler, this beer was the least impressive, yet still a decent, highly drinkable beer that I didn't have a problem drinking.

I poured this beer into a mug, and got a amber (maybe miller light-ish, but cloudier) color, a little head, and some nice lacing. Smell is pretty basic, mostly grain, a little floral.

Taste is ok, but nothing special, sweet, but not to sweet, light hops.
However this is a beer you could have 2 or 3 and not regret, and still be able to look forward to the other 9 in the sampler.

Pours a hazy looking light golden colour wit ha mid sized frothy head that dissolves quickly but leaves more residue on the glass than expected. This one basically looks like a hazy Heineken.

The aroma is light, a bit sweet and a bit hoppy, with grassy notes and some floral notes coming through. Very grainy indeed but pretty good in the end.

The flavour is low-key hoppy, with the grass and floral notes coming through again. There's a bit more noticeable malt here and a bit less sweetness than is present in the nose. Also picked up a slight metallic taste at the finish of some sips. Weird, but not out of place and I can't pick up on what it really is (it's not metallic per se but that's the best way I can describe it). Mouthfeel is light bodied and crisp.

Overall this one isn't bad but is certainly nothing memorable. I'm not a big pilsener guy so I don't know how quickly I'd seek this one out again. It's got it's good points but is run of the mill overall. Worth a try.

From my limited notes.

Pours a golden yellow color with little head.

Smell is mostly grain, slight sweetness, not much going on.

Taste is more hoppy than I imagined, but has a very raw taste to it for a pilsener, clean finish, rather plain for a Magic Hat brew.

longneck into tumbler.

A: golden with a dense white head that leaves impressive lace.

S: clean, pale malt and German hops.

T: clean lager taste, with a nice pale malt flavour unspoiled by adjuncts. Gently bitter German hops round out the finish.

M: Biting carbonation reminiscent of soda, but more substantial.

D: It's a pale lager, and it's several orders of magnitude tastier than a macro. Very drinkable.

appearance - Clear straw color, and a nice white head that fades out.

smell - Hint of hops in the smell.

taste - Clean, fresh taste, with some hop taste, but not overwellming.

mouthfeel - Light body.

drinkability - Not a bad beer, kinda on the side of a light lager.

On the label (which has a picture of a grey bearded man sleeping), it says "Cheers to Alan & 60 more years of naps." Since My Dad is an Alan, and turned 60 last month, I figured I had to try this, even if I haven't been so impressed with the last few Magic Hats I've sampled.

Typical pilsner look, wwith a golden body and thin, wispy head. Nose is bitter with European hops and an overall grassy aroma. Light texture, with medium bitterness and decent balance at the finish. For a pilsner, this hits most of the right spots, and isn't drowned in a sea of carbonation. Nothing special, but worth a shot for pilsner fans. Coincidentally, that's my Dad's favorite style.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pilsener pint glass.

A: The beer is a pale yellow color with a short foamy white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is a little pungent but contains light malts and a decent amount of hops.

T: The taste is bready and starts out with a little bit of spice. Then there’s a little bit of sweetness that some in and a mild burst of hops bitterness. The malt character is light but still hearty. The after-taste is likewise bready and bitter-sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, light-to-medium body, medium-to-high carbonation, clean finish.

D: A little tasty, goes down easily, not very filling, decent representation of style, I could drink a few but would probably look for something a bit more flavorful. It’s not the best in the style, but it’s not a bad beer either.

Part of a variety pack - the "Mystery Beer":

Pours straw yellow with a thin head that soon becomes a thin patch.

The smell is of sweet grain - something about it not far from an average macro brew.

The taste is of sweet grain with some vague fruitiness. Rather bland with an abrupt finish.

It's light-bodied with a fizzy feel. Slightly soapy aftertaste is there, but fleeting, like the taste as a whole.

It's a step or so above an average macro - bland. I would expect more from a craft brewery. It is listed here as a pilsener, though it says ale on the label. Maybe it's supposed to be a blonde ale. Whatever the case it is bland and forgettable. It says "A rave or the grave?" Bury it. There's a man sleeping on the label? Is it out of boredom? Probably.

Poors golden, with little head, just a bit darker then the average macro. A real clean smell with a little bit of hops. Taste is also rather clean, mostly of light malt and a good hop finish. This is about the best drinking pilsner i have tasted, not that i have tasted to many from the craft brew world. I would like to see Magic Hat keep this one around

This poured with a great bone-white head with decent retention. The color was a very pale yellow. The nose had a light sweetness. Mouthfeel was very light. I experienced a slight lemon taste on the tongue. The finish had that same light lemon flavor. Too light for this kid.

12oz bottle, shared by santoslhalper.

Pilsener? The bottle says 60 Winks Ale. Hmm.

Pours a very clear sunshiney yellow. Good carbonation. Small, fizzy head.

Smell is grassy hops, slightly citrus and a tad fruity.

Taste is also kind of fruity, though on a slight bit, along with a light malty sweetness and a good hoppy finish.

Mouthfeel is crisp and dry.

Drinkability is good, this is another beer that would be a hit on a hot summer day. Kind of odd having it when the high is 20 degrees, but no harm.

out of the joe's garage 12 pack, the only beer i really liked was the HiPA. under the cap for this 60 winks read "better luck next time" haha go figure.

A- very bright hazy almost mt. dew yellow with rising bubbles. pure white active bubbly head settles quickly to next to nothing with minimal lace.

S- very macro. apple, raw malt, race, grass clippings, corn, maybe some pear and citrus...maybe.

T- sweet and slightly tart like if you mixed budweiser with a fruity white wine. odd. slight hop presence up front fades quickly. grainy, grassy, and awkwardly out of balance. bland, anheuser bush type aftertaste. i suspect it was possibly beechwood aged (joke-joke).

MF- like a thin syrup, i'd like more carbonation in a pilsner.

D- kinda refreshing, but i don't really wanna finish this glass. when it's gone i'm gonna have magic hat's HiPA. straight 2 tha grave, folks.

pours light yellow color with a large white head that fades to a one eighth covering and a minimal lacing. smell is floral with a slightly fruity aroma. taste slightly fruity, slightly citrus and some hop bitterness at the finish. mouthfeel light to medium sort of a slick oily feel on the palate. very easy to drink, not at the top of the list but still ok.

Another ho-hum beer from the Joe’s Garage pack. Poured a nice golden color with snow white head of medium thickness that lingered awhile and dissipated with little lacing,. Aroma was hard to detect, and what was there seemed to be grainy hops, with little else. The flavor of this "mystery" beer was indeed a mystery, not necessarily bad, just hard to pick out any true taste.
Finally, the finish of this thin bodied beer was short and watery.

Leave this one in the garage.

One of the offerings in the "Joe's Garage" mixed 12 pack.

Pours a semi-cloudy golden yellow. Very thin white head quickly fades to a ring. Lacing is nonexistent.

The smell is of grainy corn. It's a bit husky as well, with some light hops in the background.

Flavor is, again, a bit husky with a pale malt backbone. Some hop bitterness is noticed, but not a lot of hop flavor. Not overly impressed by the taste.

Slightly dry, but crisp, mouthfeel. Aftertaste is a little grainy. This isn't a bad beer to maybe hand to some BMC drinkers, but I wouldn't buy it if I wanted a good pilsener.
