12oz bottle poured into pint glass. One of the offerings in the Magic Hat IPA sampler pack. Pours an amber color that is initially hazy but clears up quickly. Slight head. Lacing is a bit lacking in its resilience. Sweet accent in the scent. Light bodied feel. The malt backbone stands up and compliments the hop bitterness from beginning to end, but only the bitterness sticks around in the aftertaste. Not a disappointing IPA, but also not unique, memorable or a standout. (8.0)

Under the cap reads "Life is Not a Dress Rehearsal". Did they save the cap for me or what? So the website say "Irresistible Pale Ale" yet the label reads "an IPA". We'll tag it as an IPA for now. Clear and bright copper color, a solid head forms from a sturdy pour. Light tangerine hop aroma from the Amarillo hops and a little herbal from the Crystal, clean toasted grain and a mild buttery note in the back of the nose. That trademark Magic Hat smoothness is there, the biscuity and caramel malt tone battles it out with the hop bitterness. A stale mate as both walk away in a balance manner. Maltiness takes the low road and cover the palate with a caramel sweetness an bread crust biscuity tone. The hops take the high road with more flavor than bitterness yet there is a spicy prickly character upfront. Finish semi-sweet with a pinch of linger hop.

If this is Fat Angel's replacement than it a damn good choice. As far as the whole confusion of Pale Ale or IPA. One brewer's IPA is another brewer's Pale Ale. Either way, welcome to the beer world Lucky Kat, I am sure you'll find many friends.

Clear, copper color. Moderate lace left on the glass

This has the muddy hoppy smell of a British style bitter. Not nearly as floral as the typical American style.

The flavor follows the smell. Lots of earthy malt here. The hop bite is lighter than most IPA's. Really resembles the Brit's Bitter in taste as well. Good body for the style. The aftertaste is a mild bitterness with the remnants of the dirty, dry malt.

I picked this up at Quick six west. Poured at cellar temp into my session ale glass. The cap says "embrace alternative methods at this time"

A - Deep copper and ruddy brown hues w/ a lid that emerges from the top of the Dupont glass w/ 3 fingers of proud puffy cream w/ an ultra fine bead. There is a slight haze from the hops in the ale.

S - A nice floral hop scent w/ accents of woody hops w/ light pine and toasted malt + perhaps a dash of citrus under the biscuit in the aroma

M - Moderately carbonated w/ med body, mild bitterness for the style w/ a light sweet and dry malt texture. The feel is more astringent as it warms w/ an echo of bitterness in the mostly clean ale finish

T - A bit of sweet pale malt w/ a touch of bitter fruit and woody sappy hops w/ toasted malt as in the aroma. A gentle grapefruit nuance is noted as the ale warms. There is sweetness, but also a tart fruit(mango?) flavor that goes with it and the hops are more bitter as the beer is held in the mouth and they also seem spicier.

D - A very nice IPA w/ some balance. For me this Kat is Lucky and I hope to taste more since it was great on tap ( at Philly craft beer fest) and in the bottle

Poured a nice orange-brown color in to the glass with a thick and tall off-white colored head that laces the glass well all the way down. The smell is a very floral, peppery hoppy bitter aroma over some malts. I didn't smell much else, maybe a little citris in there as well. The taste is pretty good as it has a very nice rich malty base followed by a fruity citrisyness and then followed by alot of hoppy bitterness. The taste is pretty good, but I would have put this as an American IPA, not an APA. Plus I think it says IPA on the bottle. The mouthfeel is pretty good - very crisp and clean feeling. The drinkability is pretty good as I could have a few of these.

Magic Hat calls this an Amber IPA, and that certainly rings true visually. In fact, it looks a lot like a marzen: deep orangey-amber with a light khaki head that leaves some lacing. There's a bit of haziness, but it's pretty well-filtered. Big and malty on the nose (again, marzen-y), although there is definitely some hop spice there, too. The taste is definitely American-hop forward, though not aggressively so. There is a touch of rounded sweetness that comes from a balanced malt bill. The hoppiness is what stays with you, though. Not super-carbonated, with an average mouthfeel; those attributes, combined with the not-overwhelming nature of the hops, make this a beer you could session without issue.

Sampled as part of the Magic Hat Winter mixed pack. Pours a dark orangish-amber color. The smell is very hoppy, but I am getting more of an earthy hop aroma than a citrusy aroma. The taste is hoppy, with some pine and citrus as well as some biscuit malt. This is a very drinkable IPA, but it lacks something in the taste that keeps it from being a top-shelf IPA.

Poured into a tall Weizen glass.. I've never really been overly interested in the appearance of a beer but this one sort of intrigues me. The head is rocky, foamy, and just off white with lots of lacing. There is a lot of nice visible carbonation rushing up to the top of a pillar of light golden brown beer. The thing that kind of intrigues me is the shar line between the head and the beer.. it sounds weird but they're so perfectly divided that it makes the beer look strange. My initial impression was that the beer looked SUPER filtered.. crystal clear.. but now I really dig the appearance.

Not what I was expecting for the aroma of an IPA. Very spicy and minerally without the citrus or floral hop aroma.

Taste is not really bitter in the way you'd expect.. taste like about 40 IBU's to me give or take a few. Very complex flavor and heavy on the malt. A little roasted barley in there, a little dark crystal, some toastiness. The bitterness reminds me of that poppy pilsner beer Magic Hat made this summer... very twangy caustic bitterness. A little creamy yeast character in there as well.

Mouthfeel seems about dead on to me. You can really feel some of the malt lingering on your tongue, but not in excess. Carbonation may be a little high but it makes the beer look good and accentuates the bitterness a bit.

This was definitely a WTF beer for me. I really don't think it's an IPA. But it's definitely cool.

I'm just not digging it. A nice copper-colored beer, just gets more boring from there. Seems to completely lack that hoppy "brightness" that I like so much. Not a whole lot going on in the nose on this beer...decent hoppy bitterness lingers... it's drinkable, and I'm not hating's just, with so many other great IPAs being produced locally (Ipswich, Smuttynose) this is something I wouldn't go out of my way for at all.

12 oz single bottle copped from Gary's in Madison...
As a new release from Magic Hat, I was eager to try this one...
An aggressive pour resulted in a huge foamy and frothy head that lacked staying power and soon dissipated, leaving a modest amount of lacing...
Subtle, non-descript smell that lacked any real noticeable characteristics...
Average, mediocore taste to say the least, not too exciting, and nothing extravagant, with bittersweet lemon, and slight grapefruit...
Watered-down, lacy mouthfeel with not too much going on here either...
Average drinkability due to the fact that the alcohol percentage was fairly modest and undetectable...
Wasn't impressed with this one, and felt that Magic Hat could've definitely come up with something better...
Not recommended...

On first poor beer forms an excellent white head with decent head retention . The smell is full of hops mainly citrusy american hops with some piney undertones . The taste is very biting with hops up front but it doesn't last long with malt and caramel trying to balance out the hops but the hops seem to stay predominant . It has a good mouthfeel not to light but not heavy either . The beer is very drinkable for an American IPA .

12 oz. bottle, no bottled on date present. A new one to me from Magic Hat, acquired as part of the variety IPA pack.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - It pours a penny copper body with good clarity. Less than a finger of frothy white head that dies out quick. Some modest fat scattered lacing. Looks okay.

S - The aroma is what I have come to expect from Magic Hat - lightly fumey, floral, & somewhat piney. Not the typical fresh fruity floral hop aromas that I am accustomed to finding in an IPA.

T - The taste follows the nose: fumey, grapey, some generic bready malt. Nothing much in the way of hops - no pine, no grapefruit, no resin. Only very lightly fruity flavors in the form of vague indistinct berries.

M - The feel is crisp & clean. Easy-drinking, light-bodied, and with good carb. Probably the best thing about this one is it's drinkability.

Overall, a very boring and generic IPA from Magic Hat. More of a plain old boring pale ale without much going on. Not recommended, and I wouldn't have it unless as part of the mixed variety pack.

Magic Hat Lucky Kat -----3/5.

I've come to expect mediocre ratings of Magic Hat brews on BA, for whatever reason. I don't care; it remains one of my favorite US breweries.

Sampled this at the '08 Brewgrass, early in the day when I was still taking notes.

Appearance: The color of straw, reminiscent of a darker Czech pils.

Aroma: Faintly sweet and strawy, classic hop profile.

Taste: Classic IPA flavor all the way, slightly sweet.

Palate: Just enough spritz for interest.

Overall: This is a good, sessiony IPA. Not so overbearing or strong that you couldn't have 2 or 3 -- which I gladly would!

A cider gold body with a frothy, one-finger head that dissipated a little too quickly. A citric hop taste along with some huskiness and spice. Smooth and fluffy medium-body with hints of malt sweetness and an herbal, citric hop flavor that's a tad leafy but still passes over fine and finishes with a dry backbite that is crisp and inviting. A solid IPA that I could have again.

Lucky Kat pours a nice orange amber with an off white head that falls relatively quickly leaving modest amounts of oily lacing behind.

The aroma has a good amount of pungent citrusy hops with some pale malts.

The flavor has a nice fruity profile with a grapefruit bitterness from a respectable hop presence. Pale bready tasting malts, light caramel with a light saltiness on the tongue. Quite good! Finish is long and somewhat bitter.

Mouthfeel is medium, nicely creamy and smooth. Carbonation seems just right as well.

A very good basic IPA, highly drinkable. So far after tasting two different styles from Magic Hat I have to say I'm impressed.
