A- Light amber with little/no head

S- Fruity malt sweetness, about it

T- Sweet up front, moves into a caramel malt, a decent balance

M- Medium bodied and very (overly) carbonated

D- Nice full beer and will pick up again. The biggest change I'd make is the carbonation issue.

12 oz bottle poured into pint glass

A: Pours a clear bright copper color. Half a fingers worth of head that settles to a ring with very little lacing.

S: Wow lots of stuff here... Sweet roasted malts, caramel, a little dark fruit, and a touch of citusy hops. Hint of an Oktoberfest but strangely odd.

T: Sweet, malty, and toasted to start... then a little tartness and bitterness from the hops and ends with a bitter watermelon rine taste.... aftertaste is to me unpleasant. It had me at the start but loses me in the end.

M: Medium bodied to start and thickens as it warms up. Carbonation starts sharp and dulls as it warms.

D: Well the smell got me going, and the first tastes where not bad, but as time goes on it turns to a bad place for me.... 21 Adm Watermelon Wheat (bad memories).... Drink this one quickly... She turns on you fast. Sorry Hat I will not be back for this one.

A nice cooper color with a yellowish head.

In the nose is apple cider vinegar with a hint of cinnamon.

Taste is sour up front and bitter in the back - there are some nice flavor notes of roasted apple and grain, but sourness dominates. A good beer that grows on you, but not my favorite.

My sister picked me up a bomber of this from the brewery. Thankfull because I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy a six pack of it.

A- Pours a slightly cloudy amber with an off white 3-finger head that falls to a thin cap very fast. Lacing doesn't stick that well either, but it's there when the beer warms.

S- Smokey malts and a little sweetness. Grassy hop aroma is pretty faint, but it's there. A little caramel smell at all. The smell right before you taste it actually reminds me of their #9.

T- Little fruity. Some cherry flavor right up front. Actually, mostly fruity flavors. Artificial fruit flavors that remind me of gum. No smokey flavors detected at all. False advertising!

MF/D- Medium bodied amber ale that stick around on the palate for a very limited time. Low ABV is the only thing that makes this drinkable, but only so much that can do for another sub-par beer from Magic Hat.

Notes- I used to like Magic Hat when I first got into craft, but now I think that's all they're good for; a gateway beer. They aren't bad, just not what turns me on anymore, but I'll keep trying to find one that I like again.

Poured into pint...

A: Pours a 1 finger off white head above a hazy red-orange brew.

S: a sweet and smokey cherry and brown sugar aroma with a slightly fruity (lemon, tropical fruit) hop aroma that reminds me of the #9

T: brown sugar sweetness and hop bitterness up front flows to cherry wood and baked apple center which is when the brew becomes somewhat metallic, also reminding me of #9. finishes off with bitter hops, flan, and wood flavor.

M: medium body with a slick mouthfeel and an offdry finish

Overall, a highly drinkable beer that carries some characteristic very similar of the breweries flagship, Magic Hat #9, which is a good thing. Just as drinkable as the #9 but more fitting for this time of year. I would recommend.

12oz bottle to pint glass.
Pours a decent looking brown/copper color with a modest head cap. Smells like toffee and toasted malts. Taste is of butter, toffee and a little caramel. Reminds me a little of an ESB. Not your typical amber ale and certainly not what I was expecting after seeing ''ourtoberfest'' on the label. Mouthfeel is a little chewy with low carbonation. Went down fairly easy but one of these is enough.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Picked up in a mix a six deal locally.

Pours copper amber with solid head of white foam. Supremely malty smell. Sweet malty taste, some caramel, with a buried spice underneath at the finish. Can't quite make out what it is. Light loose carbonation. Lingering hop bitterness at the close. Real drinkable and tasty.

Would love to do a side by side with the Roxxy Rolles.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a half liter stein.

Pours a nice amber reddish color with a big fluffy 3 finger head that sticks to the glass very well. Dark ruby with a slight haze. Aroma is off as this isn't a lager and it has more of a caramel aroma to it. The flavor is very fruity and not as crisp as oktoberfests. This really isn't true to style as it's an ale and doesn't have that lager taste to it. Mouthfeel is nice and carbonated, leaves a fresh taste on the backend. Drinkability is ok but it's not a marzen. This is a good amber ale I guess.

Picked this up as part of a mixed sixer

Pours an effervescent amber with a finger of cream colored head. Zero head retention & lacing

S: Faint caramel & grassyness

T: Caramel & slight smokeyness, grassy hops, dryness & slight grainyness up front. Caramel, dryness green apple skins, & grassy hops as this warms. Finishes dry, slightly sweet with more green apple skin

MF: Medium bodied with slight carbonation, pretty good balance

Drinks alright; I could 2 or 3 before boredom set in. Glad I didn't buy a mixed 12 to sample this...

Magic Hat Hex pours orange/amber in the glass with a nice frothy white head that leaves a modest amount of lacing as it falls.

The aroma is mostly of sweet caramelized malt with a fruity tone to it.

The flavor is best experienced after letting this beer warm up some. Cold from the fridge or cooler from the store this beer is harsh and bitter. As it warms however it opens up, lightly toasted malts, with perhaps some Munich in there, also a bitter graininess, a light nuttiness and a fairly impressive background bitterness with hints of citrus. The fruity character noted in the aroma pulls through as well and there is a hint of European hop like spiciness. After letting it warm up it is almost pleasant.

The mouthfeel has hit the neither here nor there nail on the head, being either on the light side of medium or the heavy side of light. Carbonation is nicely done and the finish is smooth after warming.

I'm not sure what I was expecting from Hex, either an ale with Oktoberfest leanings or a nicely mellow Amber. If they wanted to take you off guard they certainly managed it! While I'm not sure I entirely like it I imagine I can, hopefully with the help of my wife, finish the six pack.

Hex is Magic Hat's Octoberfest, or Marzen style lager.

Hex' appearance is just fine as a deep brown beer with a light head and little lacing. The initial smell is sugar and fruit, with a fuller but not overpowering taste.

While the mouthfeel is decent, it will definately evolve as the brew oxidizes. The initial flavor carries a definitive lager with a malt finish, but after 8 slow ounces the mouthfeel will become more pronounced with sugar similar in finish as an apple cider.

Hex is fine and don't worry that some witch from out East will cast a spell on you.

Hex pours a transluscent amber color with hints of red and a head that disapates quickly.

Scents I pick up are toasted malts and nothing else. Not very pleasant.

The taste is extremely toasty and almost harsh for it's moderately low APV. A bit smoky but it becomes somewhat mysterious that I can't quite pick up the full flavor... Possibly fruit?

The mouthfeel is light bodied but with pretty good amount of carbonation.

Just not very enjoyable to drink more than one. A typical Magic Hat dud.

A decent Magic Hat effort and a considerable beer for the season but it lacks a noticeable factor in all areas.. I would consider buying the Magic Hat fall variety instead of a sixer of these.

a: Poured a reddish/copper color. Long streams of bubbles coming from the bottom of the glass. Had a disappointing head that really faded almost as soon as it was poured. Left a bit of off-white lace.

s: Nutty and fruity aromas. Nothing to write home about in terms of scent; not incredibly long lasting or prominent.

t: Definite smoky and roasted flavors. Fairly crisp with a bit of caramel-esque sweetness. The flavor is nice with the crispness, but isn't a very smooth or even flavor. Flavor is a definite reminder of fall which makes it an appropriate seasonal.

m: Surprising bite despite a nearly absent hop taste. Bite comes from the carbonation which is surprising because I didn't find it overwhelmingly carbonated at the pour. Medium bodied.

d: Fairly one-note in taste, not particularly interesting to drink. Crispness is a nice complement to the roasted flavor but the effect of the carbonation was a downfall. Probably would not seek out a gain.

On-tap 10/9/2010 at Mews Tavern in Wakefield, RI, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light reddish brown color, with a short off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains fruit, caramelized malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel, fruit and honey. Then a hearty malt character comes in. The hops presence is mild but provides some balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, light carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, it's not a bad beer but it's just another mediocre beer from Magic Hat.

12oz bottle pulled from my fridge poured into a standard pint glass. once again, the bottle claims theres a freshness date on the neck, but i cant find it.

pours a light orange amber color, a touch hazy. one finger of off white head that faded to a ring rather quickly. no real lace to speak of. this could go for either an oktoberfest or an amber ale, or even a pale ale.

not a huge aroma. sweet caramel malts, some what reminiscient of an oktoberfest in the way of sweet munich malts. a little smokiness as well.

amber ale, sweet caramel malts, nise dose of citrus hops, oktoberfest, sweet munich malts, a touch grainy, almost a little lager like, and a touch of smoke on the back end. not a bad taste, but nothing mind blowing. kind of a hybrid beer style.

medium bodied. crisp carbonation. hops are noticable just a little on the palate after the sip.

a pretty drinkable beer, a nice alternative to a marzen for the season. i like magic hats whole take on this beer, but not something i would go out of my way to seek out again. if i somehow come across it again, ill drink it, but i prolly wont buy it again.

Pours a deep orange/amber color with a hint of red sitting below a frothy beige head that laces most of the glass. Smells of caramel, smoke, butter and apricots. Taste is malty with a hint of smoke. Some creamy brown sugar mixed with hints of fruit, and a bit of non-descript smoke and hop bite. Medium body and level of carbonation, watery bordering on creamy mouthfeel. I'm not sure what this beer wants to be. If you told me this was an Oktoberfest I would say its not a good one. Sweet, malty, with a tart fruit and hop bite, sounds like most of the beer that Magic hat brews these days. I could drink this, but its nothing I would seek out.

I was hoping this could hold a candle to the immortal Jinx but sadly it does not. Mainly a buttery flavor which is common to magic hat and a little bit of smokiness. you also get some rusty hops but not much else. just not a lot going on here and it makes me wonder exactly what they were going for with this beer.

Tastes very malty, almost has a hint of a cherry flavor. Describing it as smoky is pretty accurate. Made me want to fire up the grill. If I had enough I would maybe try to make a marinade with it.

The smell really threw me off. I'm not very fond of it. I thought it would be really bitter and dry. But the taste was refreshing, so I don't really regret getting a 6 pack.

12oz bottle into a snifter.
A: The white head settles nicely into a full layer that does not change for most of the brew. The body is a light amber color that represents a classic Oktoberfest. Lace is left in a small batches.
S: The classic note of a malty, sweetness of a marzen, with a subtle aroma.
T/M: A spice on the front that is met by a lightly smooth body, which shows a classic taste, but is a bit grainy. The mouthfeel is a medium body and is very standard, nothing crazy going on in this brew.
D: I feel that this is a good brew for the style, but I would not get a six pack of it or another bottle in that manner for my own personal enjoyment of a marzen, but to have at a Oktoberfest taste sure, a good one to have. Just a little bit too much of a strange taste that runs through all Magic Hat brews.

Pours a nice clear amber from the spooky looking bottle. A little bit of pearly white head but doesn't stick around too long. Some nice carbonation lines the sides. Small amounts of lacing with each sip.

Moderate tones of hops, grapefruit, apple and citrus.

Nice clean and refreshing ale. Splashes of fruit, hops, and malt bitterness. It kind of comes all at once then leaves abruptly with a small tail of bitterness lingering at the end.

Overall not a bad beer, but nothing to write home about. A small step above Rickard's Red. I'd have a couple pints over some hot wings, though- that's for sure!

Poured into Standard tumbler

A - Pours a dark amber coppery color with medium effervescence. This beer pours a 3 finger head which is composed of mostly big bubbles that slowly start to fizzle away. The center of the head is brighter than the outside, with the center being bright white and the outside having a off-white tanner complexion. Although the head fizzles away, this beer does leave some nice lacing on the glass.

S - For an Oktoberfest-style, this beer has more of a hoppy aroma than a caramel malt aroma. Caramel is still in the nose, but it seems to be mixed with a floral hop scent. Very nice nose.

T - The taste is very nutty, with a tangy walnut kind of taste. A nice caramel sweetness sits on the back end of the tongue and a crisp hop bitterness follows on the finish. A little bit mild, but all in all a very well balanced taste.

M - The mouth feel of this beer is fairly suitable for this style. Not to heavy bodied like the Sam Adams Octoberfest, and not thin and watery either, like the Lienenkugels Oktoberfest. The slight carbonation and and sticky composition is very soft on the tongue.

D - The drinkability of this beer is super high. For those looking for a sessionable Psuedo-Oktoberfest that will not overwhelm you, this is it. This would also be a good starter Oktoberfest for those not too familiar with the style.

Final Thoughts: A far as Magic Hat goes, they seem to always have new tricks up their sleeves, but when it comes to traditional style beers the always seem to do a pretty solid job. This beer is no exception. A solid one thumb up!

Appearance - Clear yellow-orange with a white head that coats the glass.

Smell - Caramel, apple, walnuts, hay, and a touch of citrus.

Taste - Sweet, malty, and fruity are the dominant features of this beer. There is a bit of balancing crisp bitterness in the finish, though. Not much alcohol taste for an oktoberfest.

Mouthfeel - Medium-thick body and medium carbonation.

Notes - The lack of alcohol taste, thick mouthfeel, and relatively low carbonation make this an untraditional oktoberfest. Yet, I approve. My personal taste tends to run toward moderate carbonation anyway, and combined with the balanced fruitiness, it leaves you wanting more when you're done with the bottle.

s- oktoberfesty, sweet caramel malt, some biscuit, slight hop hint, lots of bread.

t- pretty much echos the nose, sweet breads, not too complex here.

m- medium, prickly.

A- Light amber with a fairly large white cap. The head is nice and creamy and has good retention. A nice coat of thick lace.

S- Nutty, brown-ale malt hints come off first. Smells Autumn-ly. Definitely some toasty caramel malt in there. Some earthy hop notes. Strength fades.

T- Dark slightly medicinal fruit notes. Some floral, earthy hops. A good amount of bready malts. A fair amount of nutty, grainy malt and spice hints (coriander) remind me of Fall. Some buttery hints.

MF- Light, slightly creamy body with moderate carbonation. Very slight bitterness and warmth.

DB- I would say this is just an average Fall ale. Decent flavors all around in a refreshing beer. Pretty much what I would expect in a Magic hat Autumn seasonal.
