Poured into my standard pint glass, this beer produced a whopping four finger head. Body was clear amber. Nice look for an IPA.

Aroma started with strong pine hops, then some grapefruit made its presence known. A little bit of fruity/floral character followed, but had to be looked for. The malt was well hidden.

Taste was initially bitter hop resins and pine. A slight sweetness followed. Some caramel malt flavor was there as well.

Mouthfeel was syrupy, and it seemed to leave a coating on my tongue. OK, but not what I was looking for.

Overall an average American IPA. Hop character was there, a little lacking on the malt, and the consistency was a little off.

Pours a clouded amber, with a small white head that has good retention. Leaves plenty of lacing behind.

Sniffing from the bottle, all I could smell was pine. Probably the strongest pine scent from any hoppy brew I've tried yet. To stress, it's as if I had cut down a pine tree, and harvested all its pine resin and stuffed it up my nostrils. Ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration. In the glass I got more citrus and grapefruit from it.

Taste is fairly simple, two pronged attack, the grapefruit/pine in the hops, melded with a bit of sweetness, I assume from the malts, but I can't pick out what kind, the hops here are predominant flavors. Leave a bit of bitterness on the back of the tongue, doesn't last too long at all. It doesn't seem to carry any off flavors, aspirin, or zinc, etc.

This is actually pretty thick for an IPA, I would go with medium bodied, mild carbonation. Decent smoothness and drinkability, but a little too hoppy for my tastes.

Magic Hat Encore

Pours a hazed straw, appearing like an unfiltered wheat beer with a soapy head. Aroma of lemon peel, citrus, herbs and hay. In the taste, wheat malt coming across almost tart, with a moderate bitterness and leafy, oily resins. Lemon, pine, small grapefruit. Not over the top, quite in balance with the wheat taking the lead. Comes off somewhat juicy, essentially a hopped up wit. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, well carbonated, little to no bite. Overall, a mixture of styles, a bit confused, but still decent.

A: half finger head on a murky golden orange body. Nice lacing.

S: orange peel citrus, candy sugar, pale malts and earthy hops.

T: Nice earthy and citrus hop profile on a toasted malt backbone. Grassy and floral notes come in late in the finish and provide a nice bitterness.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: as I drank this I thought how great an APA this is. The hops are about right for that. Not so great and IPA though.

Thanks to connecticutpoet for this one!

A: Pours a hazy amber/orange color with a nice two finger off white head. Nice retention and leaves nice sheets of lacing.

S: Nice combination of citrus and pine. Definitely some grapefruit and a ton of orange and orange peel.

T: And this is where it falls flat. The flavor is ok, a little bit of citrus, some bready malt, and some wheat, but it goes to nothing very fast. It almost taste like juice, and not in a very good way. The flavors are fine, but very weak. Based off the aroma I had expected a little bit more.

M: Light bodied with good carbonation. At first it seemed like the mouthfeel was going to be pretty nice, but it goes thin very quickly.

O: Its ok, I had high hopes after the appearance and smell, but the taste didn't live up to it. Decent.

A: Pours a clear, copper color with a half inch of foamy, white head that settles slowly to a layer of bubbles on the surface. Some lacing as you drink.
S: Grassy, peppery, and citrus with the hops leading off and a mellow grainy base with a light touch of roasted barley and caramel. More herbally notes in there from the hops.
T: First a fresh grass, light pine, herbal and peppery notes hits the tongue with some bitterness. Then the semi-sweet toasted and bready malt backbone lunges forth and gives a wave of balance to this IPA. More bittering hops push this beer to the bitter end of the spectrum on the finish without any alcohol warmth.
M: Medium-light body with a somewhat moderate carbonation and slight slickness on the tongue. Then come the bittering hops to finish this beer on the bitter side.
O: A decent IPA to throw back pretty easy and satisfy the hop need and refresh the palate. If you are looking for a complex yet smooth as hell IPA this is not it but it is a good beer from Magic Hat and worth the try. It has something there to offer even a big hop snob. Grab one and enjoy!

A - Poured from 12 oz bottle into pint glass. Off-white, thick (beautiful), frothy head that dissipates slowly. Opaque amber brew.

S - Grapefruit. Tingly, and spicy.

T - A lot like it smells. Lots of grapefruit. Smooth & slightly bitter finish. Medium-bodied but light enough to drink a few. Pale malt.

M - Tingly and smooth. Slight tang from the citrus.

O - Nice medium-bitter wheat IPA. The head is the best part.

12oz bottle poured into pilsner glass. Pours a cloudy orange color with very little head. Smell is malty with perhaps a hint of citrus. Nothing noteworthy to the feel; light bodied with not much substance. Very drinkable. Initially tastes sweet, then there's an emptiness followed by a very bitter aftertaste This was part of the Magic Hat sampler pack. I expected it to be my least favorite of the offerings and it was, but more enjoyable than I expected. I'm not a wheat beer fan, but I enjoyed this more than most wheat better. That being said, I enjoyed it less than most IPAs. (7.5)

Reviewed on 12/29/10, taken from notes.

Appearance: I thought this was a very nice looking beer; the color was burnt orange that contrasted nicely with a large bright white head that reduced to a rocky foam. Hazy. Lacing was excellent. Impressive so far.

Smell: Extremely hoppy citrus notes up front; orange, grapefruit and some pineapple.

Taste: Mainly citrus here, orange and grapefruit. This is followed by a bit of pine and a bitter, but not overwhelmingly bitter finish. Refreshing and balanced but not complex.

Drinkability: I found Encore to be refreshing and easy drinking but just middle of the road. Nothing offensive or outstanding, and I probably wouldn't go out of my way for it again.

Poured from the bottle a hazy orange-gold with one finger of off-white head. A whisper of lacing left behind.

Aroma of wheat and light malts along with a hint of grassy hops and caramel.

The taste was quite different than expected. No real hop presence. Mainly caramel malts and wheat notes.

Medium bodied and smooth with a lighter carbonation.

A very "OK" IPA from Magic Hat. Give a boost to the hops and we might have something here.

Appearance: very hazy orange color with some particles floating around. There’s a soap-like head that’s about two fingers or so in height. The lacing is decent

Smell: Soapy hops -- really not much malt here, but it smells average.

Taste/feel: On the front there’s some massive citrus -- grapefruit sorts. Very bitter. Almost a medicinal flavor in there. The aftertaste is spicy with not much malt to balance it out. Decent beer, but it’s just not balanced enough for me.

Pour is a bright olden orange with a creamy white head. Nose has a fair bit of hops, citrusy and orange peel, like cream of wheat note behind. Taste has the same hop profile but a touch of a messy malt backbone. A bit spicy, assertive carbonation, medium body.

This is likely the final beer in their "IPA on Tour" series, hence the name "Encore". This is actually a cross between an American Pale Wheat Ale and an American IPA. It could have been classified as either since there is no hybrid style.

Pours a light amber-gold color with a thin-head into my glass. Interesting color mix but nothing out of the ordinary.

Aroma is full of light citrus and grassiness from the hops mixed with a hint of clove and wheat. It's what you'd expect from combining both styles.

Taste leans more towards the grassiness of the hops with only a hint of clove. Hard to stomach for some reason.

Mouthfeel is full of lingering grassiness and wheat/clove.

I can't fault Magic Hat for trying to experiment. I just don't think this beer is a viable experiment. It causes too much confusion for the palate. Interesting but only in small quantities.

look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3 | feel: 3 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Pours a clouded, amber-gold body with a foaming, off-white head giving a lasting wispiness.

Smell: Modest malts, pale and wheaty, beneath fragrant hop notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pine blossoms, and a bit of pineapple.

Taste: A lightly bready, lightly sweet taste of tangy malted wheat and pale malts. I gotta say, even right at the beginning, the mouthfeel starts thinning out at a record pace. Hops yield citrus fruits, leaning towards tangerines, with some minor florals and ample bitterness giving this wheat ale an IPA leaning.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: Essentially, it's a passable wheat with a decent IPA hop profile. Maybe not a home run, but at least a well-played single.

Pretty good wheat IPA offering from Magic Hat. It's not the best I've had, but I think the wheat IPA mix can be hard to pull off, and they do a pretty good job here. Nicer light flavor. You definitely get the citrus off the nose, I got more lemon than grapefruit I think, definitely pleasant. I kind of wish this was a summer offering, I think I might like it better that time of year, but it was still good.

Poured into a pint glass from a bottle that I got out of their ipa variety pack. Can't find a date which is a pet peeve of mine.. Hazy copper color with an orange glow. Thin head with slight retention that slides down the glass and fails to lace up. Smell is like a pale ale. Not much going on in the nose. However the taste is a little better with the slightest hint of grapefruit. I think im getting some coriander as well but cant tell haha. As with most beers, imo, it gets better when it warms up. Moderate carbonation. I'm not getting as much of a dry finish that I was expecting (supposedly dry-hopped). It's an ok beer that I wouldn't mind drinking. Just not something I will spend money on. Btw i love the packaging these guys always have. Cheers!

12oz bottle poured into a Dogfish IPA glass.

A: Pours a very cloudy orange color. Creamy off-white head retains very well. Plenty of stickage.

S: Vibrant hop oils front and center. Big hit of orange peel. Very green and pithy. Dusty and crusty malt base with a smattering of wheat. Faint whiff of alcohol. Blunt and to the point, if not one dimensional.

T: Very green, oily, and pithy. Catty and a little oniony too. Strong bitterness clamps down on the palate in a death grip. Stiff hit of solventy alcohol. Toasted crust. High oily bitterness and boozy on the finish.

M: Soft creamy palate is erased by a gripping wash of hop oils. Fine, scrubbing carbonation feels forced. Alcohol warmth in the swallow.

O: Magic Hat is trying too hard with this one. They need to take this beer down a few notches and focus it. It feels as though they made a bold, hoppy beer just for the sake of it. No balance or finesse at all, and it really wears on the palate.

A: Thick and heavier than expected. Orange. Opaque. Creamier head than expected. Lasts longer than one would believe on an IPA as well.

S: Orange. Bitter Orange. Grapefruit. Hops.

T: Grapefruit. Orange. Wood. Almonds.

M: Too much aftertaste for my liking. Tastes like an unripe grapefruit.

O: Ok Magic Hat... again you disappoint me. However, this is one of the better ones I have tasted.

Pours a half finger of head on a hazy dirty straw colored body.
The aroma is mild grapefruit, not much else.
The taste is a nice pine bitterness that tapers off. Simple but good.
The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

LOOK: Good frothing, hazed pale amber

SMELL: Leafy, spicy, hop oil, tangerine, fresh cut grass, bready, yeast, kiwi, esters

TASTE: Bitter, smooth, medium bodied, hop oil, herbal, tobacco, jasmine, earthy, mint, citric rind, grainy, yeast, vegtal, bitter semi-dry finish.

Decent, a bit unbalanced. The hop flavor takes over a bit too much. Sure you get your hop fix but it is a bit of chore to sip.

Bottle given to me by my neighbor Brian as a Christmas gift, poured into a standard nonic.

A: Appears to be relatively low on carbonation. Perhaps my pour was too tentative, but head is relatively thin. A very hazy golden color underneath.

S: Muted citrus and earth tones. A touch of cotton candy sugars. Maybe I'm stuffed up, but I'm not picking up much here in the nose.

T: Bitter-sweet and earthy, a touch of pine-cone. I'm finding more sweetness than I care for; my typical complaint for most East Coast IPAs.

The wheat provides a bit of thickness and viscosity to the flavor, but I also think it serves to dampen the bittersweet punch of the IPA. As it stands, since what I am finding here appears to be long on the sweet and short on the bitter, with a lack of citrus/grapefruit, perhaps I should be greatful, as I feel like that might be improving drinkability for me.

M: Thick and heavy in the mouth, which is expected for a wheat beer. Some sticky goodness left behind on the finish, which is expected for an IPA. Overall carbonation is a touch low, but otherwise mouthfeel is a bright sport for this brew.

D/O: Although it's not a terribly "remarkable" IPA, it touches on several of the right notes in a reasonably balanced and very drinkable manner. I was surprised at how quickly I finished the glass. Repeatable.

Cloudy orange beer with a rapidly fading head.Aroma and taste are grapefruit and pine needles.A drinkable smooth feel for a beer with average taste. This tastes just like the other 1000's of IPA's that are out on the market. This beer is not terrible it's just average and has been done many times before.

Chill hazed orange with a small white colored head, pretty average.

Smell is malt and hops with a distinct citrus edge to it. Scents of wood, tea and grapefruit. Smells a little woody.

Starts out semi-dry with a tea and wood after taste. Gets a little sweeter as you drink it but the flavor is mostly tea and wood with grapefruit oil, drinkable but could be more complex.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall an OK beer but not one I would buy often, better beer is out there.
