This one looked more like a Belgian than anything else. The huge chunks of yeast floating around are either gonna be a turn off of an invitation. More of the former to me but still not the best looking beer. Nice sized head that stays and leaves good amounts of lace. Smell however is rather pedestrian and mild. Bready malts and caramel greet my nose and a healthy amount of pine as well. Light citrus playing towards orange. Taste is tilted towards the west coast but not quite as big. Caramel malt core leads. Whole grain bread and light toasted notes. A healthy grapefruit to balance but is a bit one dimensional. Nice leafiness and a very clean dry finish. Feel is nicely weighted with a smooth carbonation. Overall not bat but somehow just a bit of a hitch in the giddyup. Not bad though and you can certainly do worse.

Juicy and refreshing, Magic Hat's Encore is an American IPA loaded with American hops.

It's a cloudy amber color beneath a short-lived head of creamy off-white. The head retention and lacing are average.

The nose is full of citrusy and grassy hops over a caramelish and straw-like malt base.

In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, median carbonation.

The flavor delivers the same fruitiness found in the nose including pineapple, grapefruit, mango, melon, and passion fruit. It's also leafy and grassy with hops as well. The malt blanket anchors it, as does the solid bitterness that lies beneath the surface. It finishes dry with lingering grassy hops and a bit of spiciness.

Overall it's a fairly good American-style IPA. Worth trying.

Backlog review from perhaps a few months ago

Pours a copper-amber hue, and is capped with a respectable amount of off-white froth that resembles bisquick batter. Leaves a bit of lace.

The nose is lightly fruity, leaning toward tropical tangerine, grapefruit and kiwi. There is a sugar cookie sensibility in both the taste and aroma., The flavor follows the nose, and is really nice in terms of palate, but the volume and intensity is far too low.

Feels like IPA, a bit on the silky side. Pretty decent overall, just underperforming given all the positives it has.

I poured this beer into a perfect pint glass, it has a nice 2"white creamy head on top of a nice orange body. The smell is of citrus hops and a little grapefruit comes though. The taste is very well made, nice balance of malt to hops, would like more hops. The hops give off a nice citrus flavor on the back of the tongue.. The mouth feel is very nice and smooth. Overall a great beer.

A: The beer is hazy yellowish orange in color and has a moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a two finger high dense off white head that has excellent retention properties and consistently left a thick layer of bubbles on covering the surface and webs of lacing down the edges of the glass..
S: There are light to moderate aromas of citrus hops in the nose; the smell of grapefruit stands out in particular.
T: The initial taste has some flavors of caramel from the malts, while citrus flavors from the hops appear towards the finish, which only has some notes of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very easy to drink for the style because the flavors are very well balanced and the wheat makes it a bit lighter-bodied on the palate.

After trying the Single Chair....I figured I better try the Encore...just to make sure everything is ok. The color is a lighter amber with thin white head. The smell has subtle citrus and pine. The taste has some decent hops but not over powering...Magic used a malt to tone down the hops so that it is not too crazy. This beer has a definite body to it which I really do like. The mouthfeel is good....I could drink this at any session. The name works...Encore....I'll have another!

This beer pours out as a golden orange color with a slim head on it. The head fades and doesn't leave behind a whole lot of lacing. The smell of the beer is generously hopped with plenty of citrusy pine notes. The taste is hoppy, very hoppy actually. This beer is pretty surprising for magic hat. This IPA is probably one of the most flavorful beers magic hat has done thus far. The mouthfeel is bubbly and dry, slightly oily. Overall pretty good stuff.

i must say the only east coast IPA that i've purchased more than once. a golden bright orange with a bit of murk and spot lace of a think head that is just about white. nose of bright bright lemon zest and hints of lavender floral... but equally so tangerine. palate is citrus blend that is sweet but not one dimensionally so and the finish that is quite dry on the tongue and peppery. the middle of that being some sort of wonderful floral. a hop of spectrum. not a single hop feel. a truly evolving beginning to finish of a beer.

great for mexican, indian and spicy but not hot in general.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a Pint glass. ("3/4 Pint of Ale" as they say on the label.) The label has a freshness date and the abv is listed at 6%.

Appearance: The body is very hazy and unfiltered with a golden orange amber colored body. This is topped off with an inch of thick and creamy off white colored head. The head holds on very well and keeps a small cap of foam on top till the last sip. On the way down the glass it leaves cool lace rings behind.

Smell: The aroma is sweet and juicy with loads of citrusy, orange zesty hops over sweet biscuity and wheaty maltiness. This is very mouth watering and inviting.

Taste/Palate: Following the nose it has good balance of sweet maltiness and citrusy hop bitterness. It finishes with semi-dry wheat notes and plenty of the hop bitterness. The palate is medium bodied with a smooth almost chewy texture. Its carbonation is well balanced.

Notes: This is one of the best beers from Magic Hat in some time. I love the balance and bright juicy flavors. I hope this will become a regular in their line up.

Thanks to connecticutpoet for this one!

A: Pours a hazy amber/orange color with a nice two finger off white head. Nice retention and leaves nice sheets of lacing.

S: Nice combination of citrus and pine. Definitely some grapefruit and a ton of orange and orange peel.

T: And this is where it falls flat. The flavor is ok, a little bit of citrus, some bready malt, and some wheat, but it goes to nothing very fast. It almost taste like juice, and not in a very good way. The flavors are fine, but very weak. Based off the aroma I had expected a little bit more.

M: Light bodied with good carbonation. At first it seemed like the mouthfeel was going to be pretty nice, but it goes thin very quickly.

O: Its ok, I had high hopes after the appearance and smell, but the taste didn't live up to it. Decent.

A - Poured out a cloudy, orange/amber color with a one-finger, off-white head of foam. It left minimal lacing.

S - It smelled of pine, citrus and some burnt toast maltiness.

T - Good citrus flavor, mostly orange. Nice piney hops with a burnt toast maltiness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

D - This is a very nice IPA. One of the best beers from Magic Hat that I've had.

Poured into my standard pint glass, this beer produced a whopping four finger head. Body was clear amber. Nice look for an IPA.

Aroma started with strong pine hops, then some grapefruit made its presence known. A little bit of fruity/floral character followed, but had to be looked for. The malt was well hidden.

Taste was initially bitter hop resins and pine. A slight sweetness followed. Some caramel malt flavor was there as well.

Mouthfeel was syrupy, and it seemed to leave a coating on my tongue. OK, but not what I was looking for.

Overall an average American IPA. Hop character was there, a little lacking on the malt, and the consistency was a little off.

Went up to Burlington for a chilly, wet Mardi Gras but a great time overall.
Frothing white head that spilled down the side of my pint glass from a hurried pour. A hazy almost OJ color but slightly on the dark, almost copper side.
The nose has a great balance of tropical fruity and pine resin hops with a light malt backing.
A bitter bite but switches fruity and finishes barely on the dry side with a subtle bitterness.
Very drinkable because of the very light but full of character malt base.

Best-by date of 2/28/2011. I missed by about 6 days.

A very hazy orange-amber color, with a nice dense off-white head that stays put for a long time. Lacing is solid. Lots of visible carbonation.

Wow, the aroma pretty much defines grapefruity hops. Also some pineapple notes. There is a hint of sweetness behind this, but by no means is it balanced. Not complaining, just noting. Taste is also big on the grapefruit and pineapple, some nice rounded malt in the middle before the hops come back in a bitter fashion for a strong but short finish. Nothing lingers, which is a bit of a disappointment.

A touch thin in the feel, but a good drinkable hoppy beer. Really nothing to rave about though. Average all-around.

Magic Hat Encore is a lively, hazy amber ale with a thin, elastic, bobbly head that has excellent retention and lacing. It has a very hoppy aroma with pine and orange that's almost sweet. It's medium or medium-light bodied and smooth with a clean, dry finish. It tastes simple, fresh and bitter with lots of hop flavor. There are notes of fresh pine and citrus... maybe tangerine. The biscuity malt provides outstanding balance. It flirts with sweetness. This is a simple and tasty IPA. Great job, Magic Hat!

Reviewed on 12/29/10, taken from notes.

Appearance: I thought this was a very nice looking beer; the color was burnt orange that contrasted nicely with a large bright white head that reduced to a rocky foam. Hazy. Lacing was excellent. Impressive so far.

Smell: Extremely hoppy citrus notes up front; orange, grapefruit and some pineapple.

Taste: Mainly citrus here, orange and grapefruit. This is followed by a bit of pine and a bitter, but not overwhelmingly bitter finish. Refreshing and balanced but not complex.

Drinkability: I found Encore to be refreshing and easy drinking but just middle of the road. Nothing offensive or outstanding, and I probably wouldn't go out of my way for it again.

Cloudy amber color with a nice lace ring. Aromas of pine and grapefruit. Has a nice full, creamy body that fills your mouth. Aftertaste of citrus, namely lemon peel, on the finish. This ranks up there with some of my favorite American IPAs. I recommend it.

Bottle from their winter variety pack.

Poured into a pint glass, beautiful opaque orange color, like apple cider with a big, fluffy head that is retained for a long time.

Aroma is mostly grapefruit with some herbal notes.

Excellent mouth feel, nice bitter grapefruit hops, smooth, balanced, delicious beer. Has a dry finish with a little lingering bitterness. Terrific beer, and with its relatively low ABV of 6%, nicely sessionable. Alas, it is seasonal, and hard to find already. I'd love them to bring this back for an Encore!

Appearance: Poured into a pint class, good initial head with continuous lacing. Cloudy orange color with a reddish tint.

Aroma: Hops upfront in the noes, predominately spicy with hints of lemon citrus.

Taste: Balanced beer, good pale malt flavors with a slight sweetness but still has present but not overpowering bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, with finish that holds on to the malt characteristics. Cloudiness might be influencing the prolonged finish length.

Drinkablility: A very enjoyable beer which drinks smoothly, but also has a lot of flavor to be enjoyed.

A real time review --entered as I drink, stream of consciousness-style. Poured chilled into a wilybecker purchased at Al's of Hampden in a mix six.

The color is a deep medium amber with slight golden accent like bourbon with a splash of water -the head is healthy looking, thick and rocky with lots of lace sticking like graffiti to the insides of the glass. The bead is pretty average and clarity is pretty translucent, almost see through which indicates some filtration.

The smell is very fragrant with a hop presence I can only describe as 'woody/earthy' the floral tinges are there, but the notes of aromatic bark seem to come to mind more than any other aroma with slight berry ester from the yeast and mild sweet malt, but mostly and English yeast ester with slight spice and mild pine/woody hop aroma.

The feel is highly carbonation and slightly light in body, but moderately bitter with mild smooth/oily feel and slight sweet /creamy texture from the malt with semi-dry finish with clean overall mouthfeel that is refreshing in a lightly astringent spicy kind of tangy yeasty way

The taste is like sucking on a twig with lots of earthy flavors which I am sure are a comingled ringwood yeast and english hop combination with slight herbal/piney flavors, and mild citrus which focuses more on lime with light astringent and bitter elements. I love the mild acidic taste that seems cushioned by the lightly sweet malt profile, the only thing is it seems to become vegetal and the yeast distracts slightly from the hop quality I enjoy here slightly.

This is something I like - a beer I didn't expect to enjoy, yet proved to be decent. I won't inflate it's goodness here, but it is an ok IPA if you have a hop craving. I think it is pretty middle of the pack reallly but there is something about this that is different which I admire

I was pretty disappointed in this beer, just having Hi.P.A. a day prior. There's nothing wrong with the taste of this beer, which is why I'm giving it decent score, but the beer itself is hardly discernible from Hi.P.A. It's nice with all of its citrus-y hop flavors and it's got a good bitterness to it. By all means try the beer, it's enjoyable, but don't expect much of a difference (%ABV) from the other beer I mentioned. I don't get it.

A - Pours a very hazy hazy orange color with moderate, tight bubbled carbonation and a large, thick, creamy, sticky white head. This is a very hazy beer for an IPA, but considering it's a "Wheat IPA", it should look hazy.

S - Citrus peel, spice, tropical fruit, mild traces of orange, some bitter grapefruit, and hints of pine. Overall, the aroma isn't real strong but what I am getting smells very good.

T - Magic did a great job with this beer, it's not overpowering for an IPA which shouldn't turn away people who are intimidated by alot of hops, and it's not over the top that would make a hop head drool, it strikes a nice balance somewhere down the middle. Moderate tropical fruit flavor all the way through with just enough malt underneath for support, but the hops really are the supperstar in this particular beer. There's also some floral character that stays on the palette before ending with a lingering, partially flowery, tropical fruit bitterness. For only 6%, I'm getting some alcohol effervesence.

M - A little chewy and dry.

D - Well balanced and very drinkable.

Best beer from Magic Hat that I've had. Nice job!

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains floral hops, fruity citrus and light caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out with sweet flavors of citrus and caramel that are quickly followed by a piney burst of hops bitterness. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down very easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a very solid beer to drink for a long time.

A-Very clear looking orange hue. One thick finger head that disappeared quite quickly.

S-Get a very fruity aroma. Maybe some banana in there. I believe these Amarillo hops tend to bring out a sweet papaya aroma.

T-Good bitterness up front along with a tangy fuitiness. There is some sweetness along with a bite towards the end. Does however have a little after taste.

M-Smooth finish. Nice complexity from beginning to end.

D-At 6% abv I'd say this is an acceptable IPA. More drinkable than their H.I.P.A.

Appearance - Almost like apple cider with a hazy orange color and golden foam head. Almost no head off of the pour and it thins out to a little collar. The lacing creeps down with the beer but there is still some left after it is finished.

Smell - Warm apples, sweet spices, a dry orange odor, floral and wintery hops, and finally a faint grape and grapefruit scent with other sour citrus scents.

Taste - A sour and cider-like orange beer. Light on the hops at first with a wintery hops finish that cuts the sourness out of the aftertaste but the dry orange taste lingers with a nice bitterness.

Mouthfeel - A nice hop bite that hits the roof of the mouth and fades on the tongue. The body is well balanced with a smooth finish.

Drinkability - About as friendly as an IPA can get, everything is balanced. This beer is a joy to sip on by the fire and will leave you feeling good but its not quite a gulper. The friendliness does take away from the beer as it loses the extra hop bite that an IPA should have.
